"It is a rare privilege to lead the only faith-based, mission-driven, locally governed, nonprofit health system in our region," Mayo said. "These characteristics have set Baptist apart and this opportunity energizes me. We have an amazing team, and I see an exciting future for our community, patients, physicians, and team members." Baptist Health has five hospitals: Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville, Baptist Medical Center South, Baptist Medical Center Beaches, Baptist Medical Center Nassau and Wolfson Children's Hospital, as well as four satellite emergency centers, 55 primary care offices, about 13,000 team members and 1,762 physicians. Because of Mayo's track record at Baptist and working for other health systems, the board of directors unanimously bypassed the usual nationwide search to find McClung's successor.
