Liberal MP Andrew Wallace says Australia's borders will not reopen prematurely even with the construction of purpose-built quarantine facilities.

Friday’s announcement that the federal government had agreed to Victoria’s proposal to establish a fit-for-purpose facility has reignited hopes that Australia might reopen to the rest of the world in due course.

Despite pleas from businesses to establish a roadmap for reopening borders, Mr Wallace says he time is not right to reopen the nation’s international borders.

“Ultimately we don’t want to be closed to the rest of the world for a minute longer than we absolutely have to,” he told Sky News.

“Australia is absolutely at the forefront of how we’ve been dealing with the pandemic both from a health perspective and from an economic perspective … we are one of the leading countries from an economic perspective.

“We’ve done so well that the reality is we just can’t… now is not the time. We’ve got to continue to listen to that medical advice and we’ve got be very careful that we don’t open up prematurely.”
