Austin's annual New Year's Day Polar Bear Plunge at Barton Springs Pool has been canceled for 2021 because of the city's current status of being in Stage 4 of Austin Public Health's risk-based guidelines for the coronavirus, officials announced Wednesday.
The decision to cancel the event, in which brave Austinites hop into the pool to kick off the new year, was made "after careful consideration of the local characteristics of the virus and related community priorities," the city said in a written statement.
Austin Parks and Recreation Department officials worked with Austin Public Health and city officials to make the decision.
To commemorate the event, officials are asking people who participated in year's past to share photos and videos on social media using the hashtag #polarplungeatx.
