Anwar Ibrahim, also called Anwar bin Ibrahim, (born August 10, 1947, Cherok Tok Kun, Penang, Malayan Union [now Malaysia]), Malaysian politician, reformer, and moderate Islamist. He held many government posts in the late 20th century before being jailed for corruption in 1999. After his release from prison, Anwar played a key role in the redistribution of power within Malaysia’s legislature. However, his political career was again interrupted when he was convicted of sodomy in 2014 and imprisoned until 2018. The son of politicians, Anwar embarked on his political career in the late 1960s at the University of Malaya in Kuala
