Anwar Ibrahim, also called Anwar bin Ibrahim, (born August 10, 1947, Cherok Tok Kun, Penang, Malayan Union [now Malaysia]), Malaysian politician, reformer, and moderate Islamist. He held many government posts in the late 20th century before being jailed for corruption in 1999. After his release from prison, Anwar played a key role in the redistribution of power within Malaysia’s legislature. However, his political career was again interrupted when he was convicted of sodomy in 2014 and imprisoned until 2018.
