Raise your hand if you knew the Scranton tax collector race next year would attract so many candidates. A third Democrat emerged this week, one with lots of experience in the city Single Tax Office, which the tax collector runs. John Opsasnick, 63, said heâs seriously thinking about seeking the job. The salary is $53,300, which the city and the city school district split because the office collects real-estate and other taxes for both. Opsasnick actually worked in the office as an auditor and later tax administrator for 37 years before retiring three years ago. He said David Wenzel, the tax collector who went on to become mayor, hired him.
