We start in macedonia, where police have fired stun grenades to drive back a crowd of refugees trying to get into the country. The border was briefly reopened and a number of refugees managed to get through. Eyewitnesss say at least ten were injured. Macedonia is one of the major transit points for refugees trying to get from greece to other e. U. Countries. 44,000 have arrived over the last two months. The vast majority are syrians escaping the civil war. There is a small town 3 kill meters away from the border that was the focal point of fridays violence, its on the main route north as emma hayward reports. Reporter they spent a cold night in no mans land waiting to cross the border between greece and macedonia, but their passage was blocked by riot police. Rocks were thrown, then this. Most refugees here have escaped conflict, and few would have expected this. They took us today against [ inaudible ] we was in front of the place, officer officer officer shoot the people. Reporter tens of thousands of people have crossed through macedonias borders heading north during the last month. Too many say the authorities, who have declared a state of emergency in two border regions. The local train station is a transit point for many. Most want to try to reach serbia, hungary, and other parts of europe. While the border is closed, though, many will have to stay and wait wherever they can on the greek side. There are hundreds of vulnerable persons, children, babies, other persons with with extreme vulnerabilities, including medical needs. Most of them, if not all of them, stay in the open air. We do appeal to the authorities to take all necessary measures to address the humanitarian needs of the persons gathered on the borderline. Reporter but bolstering its borders macedonia may create a backlog of desperate men, women, and children, unsure where they can go next, knowing they cant go home. Emma hayward, al jazeera. All right. We can talk now to a person with Doctors Without Borders in greece where some of the wounded from this incident are being treated. Thank you for talking to us. Tell us some of the injuries these people are presenting with. Yes, we are just 50 meters from the borders, and here we have more than 5,000 people waiting to cross through the border to macedonia. So the situation is very, very hard. Yesterday we have very hard rain here. All of the people are without any protection, without any shelter and okay, we are here since march the last march and we are giving what we can in medical and in nonfood items, as well as food to help the people. What sort of injuries are people coming to you with as a result of trying to cross into macedonia, and then facing Macedonian Police . What sort of injuries do they have . Yeah, we we transfer more than five people injured today, because of the plastic bullets and the grenades of gas and the tear gas as well. And who so they were transferred to the hospital to the near hospital in greece. And who are these people . Who are these people who were so desperate in trying to cross into macedonia and push further north into europe. Who are they . Most of them are syrians, 70 , but we have a lot of afghan people, bangladesh people, and some other countries from africa, somali people, et cetera. And what kind of condition are these people in . You talk about them sleeping rough and without basic amenities. What kind of condition are they in . Nothing. Nothing at all. Really, the garbage and the plastic sheets are everywhere. Is only [ inaudible ] with come local volunteers who installed tent toilets, but it is not enough for 5,000 people, and we have some showers, but okay, so there is lack of water, and we need to be present as much as possible volunteers here. Tension has increased between north and south following an exchange of fire on thursday. Both countries say they put their militaries on high alert. While this governmentrun facility is cleaner and better stocked than many other hospitals and clings in iraqs capitol, its certainly not immune to the crisis spreading through a Health Care System here many consider decaying and diseased. The shortage of supplies, and welltrained staff is nothing new in iraq, but things are getting worse. Even storing medicines at the right temperature is difficult. The medications stored inside here must stay constantly refrigerated, thats why these cooling units have to keep working, and at a time when there are so many power cuts, this hospital and others are relying on backup generators. Back inside, patients find that even on a relatively slow day, wait times are long. Translator if i had a critical condition, and needed immediate surgery, i would have to wait a month to get my turn, and thats not practical at all. Reporter going to a private hospital would be far too expensive for this couple. The ministry of health isnt the only institution in the country struggling to deliver medical aid. The United Nations announced a funding gap, forcing 80 of front line Health Services in iraq to shut down. 1 Million People are affected. It means that all of the kids who were going to be immunized, arent going to be immunized, the pregnant next women that needed help, they are not going to receive assistance. Syriza rose in just a few years. Those who want it to returns to it leftist roots, and those who lost votes to it, both now want it to unravel even faster. Reporter the river of waste flows through farmland to the dam from where water is drawn and treated before being supplied to 10 million consumers. Almost half of the municipalities around the dam are releasing material containing levels of unsafe e. Coli. In a Government Order of south africas 824 Sewage Treatment plants, roughly half failed the inspections, and 30 were ranked critical.
