walt. you k police fine that prime minister, boss johnson, man, one of his top cabinet ministers, breaking coated dante and lockdown rules. ah . but he says searching for a suspected gunman after a rush, all a shooting and america's biggest city. it's our launch time in new york, about 3 and a half hours after the subway station attack. at least 5 people was shot. but 11 in all have been injured. reading actually go downstairs, which were guy we did it, but you know, we saw on bill is coming out with a stretcher with our pricing on it. their leg was injured. i'm not sure exactly what went on or what was going on. and then we saw after that to ambulance coming out with like, hopping on one leg. obviously they got her in the leg as well. so i'm not quite sure what's going on or what's going on when your police are telling people to stay away from the area where it happened, that's 36th street station in brooklyn. the area is home to the be the china town and its popular for its views of the statue of liberty. it's a large warehouse district where many creative businesses have set up 1st and salumi has been following developments in new york christ. and let's just start with, with the latest, what do we know? we know that the bomb squad is on the scene, and we are hearing reports that they have taken an explosive device and they are attempting to secure that on the scene. we know from videos that emerged from the scene that there was smoke on the subway car as it pulled into the station were told ban from witnesses that shots were fired. and 13 people were taken to the hospital, 5 of them apparently with gunshot wounds. but this is very much an ongoing investigation with police very much involved at the scene, keeping commuters away from that busy subway stop. as you mentioned, the incident happened during the morning rush hours. people were on their way to work and to school and to whatever it is they had planned for the day that this area of queens is now being swarmed by law enforcement in particular the bomb squad . and as far as we know, no suspect has been taken into custody. no announcement of an arrest has been made . police say that they are looking for a man who was wearing a gas mask in an orange construction style vest. he's described as a 5 foot 7 inches tall and a $170.00 pounds. what was his motive? who was his target? all of that? very much an open question as this investigation continues, but police of bye for all intents and purposes, attempting to secure the scene, collect the evidence and look for the gunmen and if there are any, we don't know accomplices as well. just while we've been talking on kristen, we've just had an update from the new york fire department. ah, which is ops, the victim count in the brooklyn subway attack saying 8 people having shot 8 of is injured. it doesn't say about the status of their injuries. the people who have been shot or mentioned any fatalities at this stage. kristin, let's talk about subway crime because it is not a new concern. the new york is it but, but this happened. i mean, in the morning rush hour. absolutely and like the rest of the country rising crime, gun violence, very much a concern in new york. the actual murder rate in new york is down this year over last year. but gun violence is up and subway. crime is way up to 100 percent increase in february of this year over last year. and that prompted the mayor of the city, eric adams to institute reforms, to the way police officers patrol the subway and patrol the city as well. and the subway, in particular though they were, they have been cracking down on fair evaders. people who jump the turnstile homeless people have been removed from sleeping on trains and benches and subway stations as a way to attempt to make the commuters feel safer and to make the platforms where they wait and the trains that they take safer. this is how many new yorkers get to work in school. most new yorkers, at city of 8 and a half 1000000 people rely on the subway for their daily commute. and especially after the coven pandemic, as the city is attempting to get back on its feet. and get more people into office buildings, 5 days a week to bring the economy back. the mayor really made subway safety and emphasis . it's something he's been focused on in the last months. so this very much a concern for new york residents and, and city administrators dealing, dealing with all of these concerns for, for the city. talk through the location of kristen happened at the said 36th street subway station in brooklyn. i mean, what is that area? like, how busy does it get? tell us a little bit about about this particular place. it like much of new york, it's very diverse, a very eclectic. i'd call it a working class neighborhood. you mention, there's a lot of warehouses in that area. i know there's a large chinese population, large asian population out there, large hispanic population. it does have great views of the statue of liberty. it's on the brooklyn new york coast. but, you know, like all parts of new york people, they are rely on the subway and on buses. and right now we're hearing that the city is attempting to get bus is running to help people make their way around that station, which is shut down. now for this very serious investigation, but the rest of the city, the subway continues to run and operate because it's so vital to survival here. all right, i'll leave that now kristen salumi there for us in new york. thank you. and the u. s. president has been briefed about the shooting, how the politicians have been responding to the incident senate majority leader, chuck schumer tweeted saying he's closely monitoring the shooting. he says, i'm praying for all the victims, the families, and all those impacted said i'm grateful for the quick action of our 1st responders and to everyone in new york state safe. let's close up at alan fisher who's line for us in washington, d. c. and alan, as we mentioned, the president has been briefed and he's on his way to i where we hooked we might hear from him before he left the white house. but he got into his convoy, which drove off to joint base andrews with not even a sighting. never mind a word. we're hoping we me hear from him at some point soon weather before he leaves for iowa, when he actually touches down there on air force one itself. if he says anything, we'll get relate to tourism, we'll pass it on to you. the vice president she is in pennsylvania. she is also being updated across as the whole government. they are keeping an eye on what is happening in new york at not just here at the white house, where senior officials are in touch with the mayor. and also the police commissioner saying they will give any federal assistance that they may need and any form that me take. but they're also monitoring this, obviously at the department of justice and at the f b i. and as you've heard from chuck schumer, there will be a number of senators and representatives from new york who will be following the news as well as what happens next. as far as the government responses really in the hands of new york, they'll decide what sort of investigation they says, how they want to proceed from here. how much federal help they need and what resources they can call in from the federal government. we may get an indication at with us, we're all expecting that news conference from n y p d and new york police department at some point in the, in the next 10 or 15 minutes or so. but certainly it is something that the white house is keeping an eye on, not least because the whole idea of gun control has been at the forefront of the thinking here, the white house in the last 24 hours with an event on the south lawn addressing that issue itself, let's talk about that. about the, the efforts to tackle gun crime and so called the ghost guns. well, joe biden stood on the south lawn on monday and talked about the idea of course gone. so what ave this might be a whole new phrase for people. these are guns that can be bought, essentially as a kit off the internet or from some retailers. you can put them together and about 30 minutes. and it be me selling like a toy, but they shoot real bullets and they can kill real people. and so they are a significant weapon in the hands of some people, but they have no serial numbers. there's no way to trace anyone who buys these and they're turning up at crime scenes. the number of a gun crimes and violent crimes in the united states has risen. those with the use of ghost guns has increased tenfold in the last 5 years. so this is something that joe biden wants to take action on. one of the things he is saying that if you sell these guns, then under federal law, you will have to provide a serial number. and you'll need to tell us where you're selling it. that it could still get passed on some of ended up and i'm looking at the policies and because i, we're going to hear now from deputy commissioner miller, who is speaking on the scene in new york. so let's go there and, and take a listen. deputy mayor, 1st deputy mer, lorraine grillo, governor cathy hoko, police commissioner keyshawn soules will outline the events as we know them. laura cavanaugh, the 1st deputy commissioner and acting fire commissioner, will walk you through casualties. general lever from dmca will give us the status of the system and then we'll be able to entertain some limited questions. there will be another briefing later this afternoon where we'll be able to update that. and then additional briefings as needed for stephanie merrill lorraine grill. thank his. thank you john. so from the very minute this incident occurred, they are and i said on the phone monitoring the situation constantly. we have worked with all of our agencies, dfi, n, y, n, y, p, o m, all of the agencies who have work really hard together and continues to throw all of these resources as, as this, at this situation we've made all the resources available and we'll work with the office of emergency management for any additional needs. i'm going to ask the police commissioner keyshawn so to speak to you and give you an update on, on the events. thank you. good afternoon. were it update new yorkers about an active shooting incident that took place this morning inside the 36th street subway station on the line? i want to begin by assuring the public there are currently no known explosive devices on our subway trains. and this is not being investigated as an act of terrorism at this time. we can also report, although this was a violent incident, reportedly we have no one with life threatening injuries as a result of this case is investigation is only hours old. so please note this information to subject to change just before 824 this morning. as a manhattan bound and trained waited to enter the 36 street station. an individual on that train donned what appeared to be a gas mask given to the canister, out of his bag and opened it. the train at that time began to fill with smoke. you then opened fire tracking multiple people on the subway. and in the platform again, we will describe him as an individual. he is being before it as a male black approximately 5 feet, 5 inches tall. with a heavy bill he was wearing a green construction type best and a hooded sweatshirt. the color is grey. at this time, we are working with our federal partners where we're asking for the public's help. anyone with information videos or photographs no matter how insignificant they think that may be, is encouraged to call crime stoppers at 80577 tips or call a strictly confidential. i'd like to turn it over to the f d n y to get information about the victims. oh, you start. i apologize. the governor would like to speak now or to hold them up. all right. good afternoon. this morning, ordinary ordinary new yorkers woke up anticipation of a relatively normal day. they left their homes in route to school and reach to their jobs into a normal day. as i mentioned, that sense of extreme quality and normal. this was disruptive, literally disrupted by an individual, so cold hearted and depraved apart, that they had no carrying about the individuals that they assaulted. is they simply what about their daily lives? just individual is still on the loose. this person is dangerous. you're asking individuals to be very vigilant and alerts. you'll get more reports on. that's officially if the game goes on. this is an active shooter situations right now in the city of yours. i just got off the phone with the mayor's recovery. well, his monitor and he's actively engaged in the situation. i ought to let you know to the people of the entire state of new arm stand with the people that judy judy and we say no more. no more mat shooting, no more disrupting lives. we're creating heartbreak for people trying to live their lives in romo, new york. it has to end it, and now we are sick and tired of reading headlines about crime, whether they're mess shooting for the loss of a teenage girl or a 13 year old. it has the stuff i'm committing the full resources of our state despite the surge of crime, this insanity that it's seizing our city because we want to get back to normal. it's been a long, hard, 2 years. that's a great expense of stability and normal be and this is what the mayor and i are going to continue to work toward. nice thanks to partner the brave people, the m p a. the 1st one to has a sense of the drivers of the trays to leave the station to make sure no more victims could be heard from. the n y p d, f d n y state police. everyone involved in that as one purpose stopped the infinity of these products. you'll hear now some of our departments want to thank them for being there to help us use a volatile situation. but we'll be giving continued reports as a stay on for. again, we ask everyone to be careful because the report would you see is likely that someone out there listening to this to help us lead us to that individual. you have a description of what they are wearing. you know, the details. this is the day we pull together new yorkers, united in a common purpose to say no more. notice i'm going to continue with the governor of the state if you are working with our local partners right here. thank you. good afternoon. this morning the f b y received report a gunshot victim in the subway. thanks to the quick response you were able to treat 16 patients. 10 of those patients are suffering at this time, and 5 of them are critical of the conditions. in early 16 total patients, 10 of them are suffering from gunshot $1.00 and $5.00 of them are critical. but stable condition at the time, i'm gonna pass it over to the n k for an update on there. okay. first of all, we have to thank the invite tv and the y and the whole team. we've done so much to protect us and help us immediately to recover from the situation. and i also need to acknowledge dmca workers who were at the boss of worth to mediately move a train that was on the platform the our train added the station. so it could carry people to safety. i was that was smart thinking right now. the services suspended w services suspended the d and the n and the are running with suspensions and some shuttle buses. and folks, you check the website belated. obviously it's a disruptive day. but a lot of the system is in fact running, i just want to say one thing on a personal note, which is on $911.00. i stood on court avenue and watch people new yorkers come back from that tragedy. and i thought i'd watch new york and help each other and storekeepers walked out and give people water. that was the same thing. we've done the plot point today. we've done new yorkers in a difficult situation in emergency helping each other. that's the subway riders. that's new yorkers are every day they're showing people in the subway, which is our public space. that new yorkers of all varieties could come together in small spaces and get along and create something bigger. that's what we remember in these emergencies as well as the tragedy. and the thought for them where the quick recovery of the victim new yorkers are incredibly resilient, just as they are in every emergency. and we thank them for what they've done. and we think the governor and the mayor for their leaderships in all of our recovery control goods and from every one of these challenges. so just to reiterate, we're going to be very limited and what we are able to answer questions just to also underline our partners here. we got mike reagan, mike reagan, as the assistant special agent in charge of the joint terrorism task course with the mit days. john de veto from atf was helping us with tracing efforts and investigation. he's the special agent charge for new york city, or the brooklyn district attorney. erica dallas, who is also here. and of course, chief can for each of the departments. and 1st deputy commissioner at bon, so we'll start off with questions for the police. the rain. rain are on the tree and she's all happy. and what happens when he gets back in the train car? the shooting began in the train car what happened and depart? well, what was going on inside because it's all about food. as i stated before, we only able to get limited information because under investigation, as the train was pulling into the station, the subject put on a gas map. you then opened a canister that was in his bag in the car, filled with smoke. after that, again, shooting the random idea. why didn't we do not know the motive at this time? we're not rolling anything or do they know what the other injuries, then we're not going to want to fight. there are a variety of other injuries from smoke ventilation to shrapnel to panic. when you say, what was the struggle? it could be from anything. it's still under an investigation at this time, so it would be a breathing from a bullet to be from the panic. are following, but it's not going to close the device, not at the end. you know, that's up to 2 investigations. we're endeavoring to determine that right now. okay, josh, why don't? why don't you, why do you want to not terrorism that state why? i'm not ruling out anything we're determining what that motivates and we'll find that out as investigation continues to one particular ethnic group. or if it comes out right, we got, we got time for about 2 more. i mean, we're good. that's not the case. we're starting with the cameras work that's under investigation that we were where we got we had not ident anywhere. we have identified the subject. he was wearing a green type construction. hope you had a comment on the just kind of run benjamin this morning. where was i'll be happy to coordinate with the fact in the hospital right now to do live. those pretty was all right, thank you very much. yeah. listen, we're going to get hang on a 2nd. hang on a secondly, we're going to get back to you with a time for an update later information is developing. we expect that more later. and that will not be here. that will be either at the precinct just to explain what happened there. what we now know, we have been told that there are, were no known exclusive devices, that this is not currently being investigated as an act of terrorism. there is no one with life threatening injuries. we're being told that 16 patients having treated 10 suffering from gunshot wounds, fiver and a critical but stable condition. we were told that an individual on a train in the subway station put on a gas mask, then took out a canister of his bag, opened it, the train filled with smoke and the suspect been open. fire on the subway train and on the platform. let's bring in crispin's, lou, me, who's the missing into that press conference as well? kristen, what else did we learn? well i thought it was interesting that they said they were not investigating it as an act of terrorism, but when pressed for the reason why police commissioner kesha sewell said, in fact, she had not ruled anything out that the investigation was still open and she was not ruling out other motives, but at this stage they don't have evidence perhaps, to link it directly to terrorism. as you said, what we do know is that a man was on the subway. he was described as a black man about 575 foot 7 inches tall. a stocky build, while on the train he opened a canister, smoke poured out onto the subway and he opened fire. we have an updated toll of injured. now i believe it was a 16 people in total, sorry, losing my notes here, but to add 5 critically injured but stable 10 wounded by gunshot, another 6, a hurt in the stampede to leave the train. apparently, police are still very much searching the area and looking for witnesses as well as the suspect, who can give them more information that might help with their investigation. we also heard from the governor on seen a for the investigation as well. kathy ho goal saying that this has to and now we want the city to get back to normal. she's referring to increasing reports of violence on the subway system and in the city in general as related to gun crime and efforts that she and the mayor of the city. eric adams have been undertaking in an attempt to tamp down on rising crime rates and get people back on the subway to get them back into the city. back to work post cove in a city still recovering from a struggling downturn economy. and this is seen as another setback, certainly for new york officials, kristen, the, the new ga her as well as she was talking seem very strong, i guess would be the word in the way. she said, you know, when we're done with this, we want no more. mass shootings was sick and tired of hearing headlines about shootings about gun violence, about you know, crime in general is subway crime. i know. ah isn't a new concern for new york, but it's an increasing concern. absolutely . between february of 2020 and february of 2021 subway crime went up to 100 percent . i homelessness, post coven pandemic has been an increasing concern in the city as well. in a lot of the homeless population, i find a place to stay in the subway system. that's something the city has been attempting to crack down on to move people into shelters where they have more services and are less likely to cause harm to civilians or to the commuters rather are better using the subway system. so that certainly has been an issue and a concern for the city and for the state again as they attempt to get people back to work and back into the city, commuting an a and a half 1000000 people live in new york and, and many of them rely on the subways to get to work. so this is a, this is a tough political issue for leaders and n t. a concern for average new yorkers. you hear about it every day. people worried about sending their kids to school on public transportation because that's how many of them get to school. so it's obviously, this is not just an isolated incident. we've had older women pushed downstairs people pushed on to track stabbings that have occurred. and that's what she was referring to there when she said enough is enough, or i will leave it there for now. kristen salumi there in new york has crossover to alan fisher. a who's i for us in washington, d. c. and ellen, as we've been saying, the president has been briefed. what have we heard? if anything so far from the white house? well, we know that the president was briefed and updated. senior officials here to the white house were keeping in touch with both the new york mayor and the police commissioner vehicle for any federal assistance that is required. we know too that the whole situation is being monitored of the department of justice and also of the f. b. i is also being monitored on capitol hill by members of the senate and the house of representatives that actually represent new york constituencies, districts and areas. and so they're keeping across the information that that's coming in, as well as for dual biden, he's left for iowa. we hope that we might be able to hear from him, but he took the motorcade to andrew's joint base andrews. so i'm so used to calling it under the air force base, joint base andrews, and then he's in the year now on his way to iowa. the gen stuckey, who is the press secretaries you to do what they call a gaggle it's. it's not a formal briefing, but the journalists gather round her in the air force one to get to pepper with questions. some will be about the trip to iowa. but clearly the 1st question anyone will ask is, what the president has heard about. what's happened in new york, and if he has any reaction and is bonet reaction given that about 24 hours ago, he was standing on the south lawn of the white house, talking about gun control, how he would like to do more, particularly with assault weapons, but he was taking some action to try and combat what he sees and, and as provable as being the increase in both violent crime here in the united states. but also the numbers of crimes involving a firearm. alan fish are there for us at the white house. thank you. we can speak now to gabriel. i was under her life for us at the scene. gabriel. it's been about 4 hours now since this attack was happening there now. well, it's just an incredible police present. well, over a 1000 law enforcement officials here been here now for a couple hours as the real priority now is searching for this suspect, the suspect that is on the loose, as you heard from the press conference from police officials, they are very much looking for this suspect urgently, that is really the priority right now, not only here and this part of brooklyn, but in the surrounding areas as well. that's what they're trying to do is find who this suspect is and identify him and bring him apprehend the suspect. and that is what the real priority is here. now, i'll step out briefly and you can just get a sense of how many law enforcement officials are here in this part of brooklyn. this stretches down for several long blocks here as various different units of the police department are here. metro, transit officials as well. everyone securing this scene, of course, because it's feel very much is and will be an active crime scene. gabriel, we had earlier from officials that there is no no one motive and as you say.
