tongue that 3 days on the full impact of the disaster remains unclear. and china's birthright dip to a wreck or lower, we look at the implications is large part of the world seat declining populations. ah, the saudi led coalition has launched a strikes on yelman's capital, killing several people in response to a deadly attack by who the rebels in the united arab emirates, the herpes say they fired 5 ballistic missiles and a number of drawings at an oil facility. and the abs jobby and to buy airports, police say 2 indian nationals and one pakistani were killed. the fees are warning of more strikes me you a, the moratti's announced a partial withdrawal from yemen back in 2019, but maintain a military presence there. washington has condemned the attack, calling it an active tara, and vowed to hold her fees accountable for the strike. mohammed al our tub has more from humans, capital summer. could into the statement of the how these spokesperson the area. he says that the, the carried out this attack against the united arab emirates, in order and retaliation. 2 of the, he described its participation and the outlet quality and the war. he said that the, this, the promise that we have we have made and that they have fulfilled such a promise. we have used according to his statement, 5 weighing the missiles that have attacked according to the oil refinery and so far and also the international thought of dubai. and i will, bobby, he has mentioned also the have a talk to the international court of lobby and do a. so the situation is father escalating that the he, he also warned that there are no so far foreign companies in order to, to avoid becoming a close to, to vital facilities according to his words. so this is not to be target, especially if he said that if the united m decide to continue, it's what he described aggressive escalation against him. and the, the situation, as i mentioned, is escalating so far with these now extend their targets. he mentioned that he would expand their targets, bags of their targets, in case you decided to continue its 5 space in the u. n. is calling on all parties to exercise a maximum restraint and prevent any further escalation. the secretary jones condemns today's attacks on abu dhabi international airport and the nearby industrial area which were poorly called several civilian casualties. and have been claimed by the who tease attacks on civilian infrastructure and civilians are prohibited by international humanitarian law. the secretary general cause upon all parties to exercise maximum restraint and prevent any escalation against its height intentions in the region. there are no military solutions to the conflict in yemen . dave de roche joined us some more analysis. he's a professor in the near east south asia center for strategic studies at national defense university in joins us from maryland. hello there, professor. thanks for joining us. well, 1st of all, how much of an escalation is this in terms of the conflict in the region? it's a significant escalation. there has been the previous attack in 2018 year, which was small enough that there was still confusion as to whether it was just an explosion. there's also been iranian attacks on the ships off the coast of which ira. but because that was off coast, it was viewed as isolated in quite get the attention it deserves. so this is, you know, an attack in the heart of adobe and strikes rate at the core of, you know, the way you desire to be a modern state. so it cannot be underestimated. talk us for the timing of this attack in the u. a for the past few years. the moratti's have died down their direct military involvement in yemen. although in the past few weeks, they've turned their guns on hurry fees in the east as early as december. yeah, that's right. so things have been going pretty much towards the way in the north. they were on the verge of taking more of although that lasted for over a year and mark still in the hands of the coalition. but the way he moved forces from the coastal area into shotwell province and chased these out within 2 weeks. now we're seeing parts of mara province are being taken over by this emory supported militia called the giants for gauge. and it appears as though the who sees you know, may, i'm not sure how eminence is, but they may have to with the future mara. so this is disastrous and i think this is what explains not only this but also the seizure of the many cargo ship that was carrying saudi military cargo. so this escalation, what does it mean for, for things going forward where to from here will the herpes be able to sustain, continued attacks against the u a. and will be a morale. he's able to accept that in return to desire black comes on the battlefield in yemen. good question. so this is not a sustained attack. this is, this is sort of a small strike that goes in there. but what it shows is the ability to all civilian infrastructure in the age of the jerome and ballistic missiles. so people have idea that listing missiles are like a big dom that you drop on everything, but they're really only point offenses missile defenses. and if you have people attacking civilian infrastructure, it's very, very difficult to do this. what we basically know is that all the countries on the golf are honorable to radio and attack either directly. yes, we start the cape refineries or through radium partners and proxy such as these are the various rocky militia. so it's a very dangerous period for everybody. i guess, amongst all of this, we are talking about people though. so what are the prospects of pace in yemen? ultimately, this escalation is not going to help find a solution to that ongoing humanitarian crisis happening there. no, they're not. i gotta tell you that the humanitarian crisis is particularly vexing problem. and one of the things that's driving people in the west un crazy is that, you know, the us secretary generals or special inspectors report said that they were actually skimming off humanitarian aid. or they were holding it back and giving it to friendly people and denying it to others. there's also the possibility of the severe, this tanker that is off the coast with the data and about the break up in the very fragile ecosystem of the red sea. the who denied the un access to that facility to inspect it and repair it. but they're not the only people, cars and trucks, and you haven't. one analyst said that they're basically 7 yemen now. and each one of those has to be approached individuals. so it's a very complex, very dangerous situation. and unfortunately civilians suffer the most. you're exactly right. thank you very much for breaking it down for us professor dave de roche. they're from the near east, south, east south asia center for strategic studies. appreciate your time. thanks to sedan now, where at least 7 protest as have been killed by security forces during demonstrations in the capital. she gas and bullets were fired at thousands marching towards the presidential palace in cartoon. and comes at head of a cave visit by us diplomats calling for talks to end their political crisis. protests against the military government have continued since the cur, back in october, another, a zillow did the dictator yet, i'm against tyranny, dictatorships, and any regime that stands against people's freedom or justice. i am a guest inequality among the so the nice people, whether that's in fortune distribution, freedom of speech, or any other thing on apollo lim, home, other than glove, alaska. i am here to day to resist the military coup that happened on the 25th of october and we hope our free revolution reaches the democratic civilian path. and hopefully the sudanese people achieve or the goals donahoe had been morgan fall. this report from one of the protests, any cartoon as the un mission here and sudan tries to mediate between the various political parties, civil societies associations, and various actors here in sudan to try to break a political deadlock that has been in place since the military took over power and late october last year protested once again take to the streets since to take over there have been calling for the military to return to their barracks and leave to dance politics. and this protest comes before a visit is expected by senior u. s. official, the assistant secretary of state or for african affairs and in your special envoy for the horn of africa are expected to arrive in order to to give us the port to the you. an initiative which is hoped to break the political deadlock that has left to them without the government for more than 2 months now. to dante's sovereignty counsel led by the military says it accepts the you and initiative to try to break the political deadlock. but protested they, they don't want to negotiate with the military. many of the organizers of these protests, they will not sit down at a round table where the military present political parties, on the other hand, are divided. some say they are willing to negotiate, to try to get the country out of a deadlock while others say they also want the military going before any kind of negotiation takes place. the biggest challenge to the you and initiative that is currently under way is the issue of trust between the various parties. since the military takeover and late october, the trust, the very fragile trust that existed between the political parties and the military was broken. protesters have been met with tear gas live ammunition by security forces that you and has condemned the use of force by security forces, at least 64 people have been killed. 100 have been injured as they demand a complete civilian rule. a british woman has been named as the 1st known victim of the synonymy that struck the pacific island nation of tongue on saturday. the brother of 50 year old angelo glover confirmed to death. he says she was swept away by a wave while her husband clung to a tree as daily and new zealand have sent military surveillance cruise to assess the damage caused by the erection of an undersea volcano and the synonymy that followed. sarah clark has more from brisbin astray leanne, where, where that the capital has been badly damaged. a homes are resorts along the western beaches have also been badly damaged and has been also reports of further volcanic activity. the united nations office of humanitarian aid, the coordination groups, they're citing also that they believe a to distress beacons have been reported there on the islands. some of the low lying islands have fall away and mango on those islands. 36 people live on mango and 69 on foreign oil. so the initial reports we've got at the moment, mainly of infrastructure, and that's around also told the top who the company that owns the single underwater cable that generates the internet. the network and communication in tonga, that's also been badly damaged when you zealand has deployed and iran aircraft that was deployed on monday. that will look at the initial, a surveillance and the damage of the infrastructure around toner. australia is also sent an aircraft left from the m, the air force base, which is in brisbin or where we are, are, australia is also looking to potentially deploy a ship h m s. adeline, that's one of the navy vessels. and purely because we've got a lot of problems with trying to get flight access, aviation access because of the volcanic ash. now the defense minister here am bruce pine, has said that a strategy will do all it can we know with regards to the humanitarian groups, the red cross is already got its network deployed in that region. oxfam is also looking at our local teams on the ground. unicef is, are looking already it deploying some of these emergency supplies from fiji and its warehouses here in brisbane. and that includes the likes of tense, our top hollands at hygiene kit, sanitation kits and water. so that, so looking to be deployed and mobilized from australia. so it's a major effort to try and get this relief in to tongue and some of these pacific nation simply because as i mentioned, the volcanic ash is spread throughout the region and flight to have funding it difficult to getting still head on al jazeera, another push in the us, the new laws to protect voting rights on martin those are on the eastern side of canada now. and then there's a cold swing of air for it real cold. then a modest 15 alter minus 6 in toronto. the wind will die during the day on tuesday, but the rollers will still be there, the sunshine beard and sky, over the top of what would be an awful lot of snow, and no snow storm developing and coming your way coming towards the great lakes. later on tuesday at temperatures are dropped. getting calgary, it's been about plus 6 degrees on monday, down about minus 13. i'll try to get to tuesday, and this will also develop, it won't be a repeat performance, but it will be similar to where the cold air comes up against, against the gulf moisture on the gulf states than this line of thunderstorms could be once again, quite severe similar, not exactly the same as the last time it happened. and this is the last time it happened. this end of it means thunderstorms, through the bahamas, brought me into haiti as well. he says, out of cuba and s. has condemned it as an act of terror. security forces in sudan had killed at least 7 protest is in the capital cut soon. t gas and bullets were 5 demonstrators marching towards the presidential palace. the un has condemned the violence and hold for talks to end the crisis. and a 50 year old with british women that living in ta night is the 1st norm victim of the synonymy that struck the pacific island nation on saturday. astronomy and new zealand air force cruise have been sent to assess the damage. martin luther king day in the united states has been marked with a march and the capital to demand more protection for voting rights. president joe biden has vowed to pass a new protection law, but he lacks support in the senate democrats saying new legislation is needed to protect the rights of ethnic minorities and low income workers from republican efforts to disenfranchise them. last week the president said, he's tired of being quiet about voting rights. well, we're tired of being picked up since january 6th, 2021. when the insurrection us attacked our capital, 19 legislatures have passed. 34 laws, clawing back voting rights for their citizens. and states like my home state, where a new laws i should say of georgia are designed to confuse voter so i don't know where to go. she have returns, he attended the march and spoke to activists. daniel martin luther king junior day parade was cancelled this year in washington, dc because of the pandemic. but a smaller piece walk is taking place. participants came this year to have their voices heard at a time when republican state us off the state house across the country, legislation is being introduced specifically to undermine but turned out of african american voters. the rights that as martin luther king referred doctor kings elder, some sir, said king, bled for what these marches. one is for congress, which off rule is controlled by the democratic party to pass federal voting rights legislation to protect the franchise. this march, this year is extremely important. people have literally, therefore such right? and to continue the legacy of doctor king in seeing him send you the advocacy for voting. all rights is extremely important on without it, our democracy is at the rate. we see that 3 of our democracy every single day, and if we do not advocate of own rights to one day, our democracy will fall, i think is a sad day in america because ah biden receive 80000000 volts. trump receive 70000000 volts. we sent them here as the american people to washington to pass legislation that would be in the best interest of citizens, not if they cannot get anything done beyond emergency packages such as called that then we have a serious problem. the problem is, it's the democratic party that just doesn't seem to have the votes in congress to override congressional rules and overcome republican opposition to pass this legislation. even joe biden last week, seem pretty doubtful that this would be passed under his watch after he some se, belatedly put the full force of the presidency behind the push to get voting rights legislation passed. ironically, if bitin does fail once again to get a major piece of legislation, parcel he promised on the campaign trail, the democratic vote, the democratic turned out of the upcoming mid term elections may be depressed anyway. of bringing cliff or bride, who's the co founder of black voters. matt, have fun. he joins us live via skype from washington. d. c. cliff, thanks so much for being on the program. festival. took us through this new legislation and why it's so important for minority voters. yes, so thanks for having me. this new legislation is actually 2 different bills that are now essentially trying to be combined into one on one hand, the 1st one, freedom vote. egg establishes new standards, new lexus standards. it makes election day and asked why holiday ali creates more days of early voting. it helps people to be able to restore their voting rights after they've been taken away. and so it's got a lot of things that establishes a new benchmark that fights against what we call gerrymandering us. when i like the officials car about these funny sake districts in order to be able to pick their voters, is that voters being able to pick their elected officials. and so it's got a lot of things that, you know, basically opens up access to what makes it more fair. it's also the other part of the bill, which is the john lewis voting rights act. basically, 6 to restore parts of our $965.00 voting rights act, which were weakened by our supreme court. the most important part is the section that allows or requires that certain states have to get any changes to election policies approved by the federal government by the department of justice before those changes can go into place. so before a state or a city or county could close polling places or an extra requirements, like photo id or reduce the number of early voting days or change voting hours before they could do any of those things, they would have to get cleared by our federal government, that's because certain states and parts of states have a history of suppressing votes and discriminating against against black and brown people. so cliff can you give us a context? this all comes when republican dominated states are knocking a wave of new restrictions. what impact at that having and how has former president donald trump false claims of election followed back in 2020 lead to this point. yet the false claims are what we call here. the big lie, right? because it's, it's a big lie of alexi for that. you know, he believes that if you repeat it enough and you say loudly enough that people believe it and that's essentially what's happening. not only of people believe that, but now they've creating policies, author, and all of it is about the massive turn out in your introduction or in one of the interviews that you just did when a people say how joe biden got samuel, you more boston than donald trump, it's because of that turn out and because of who didn't turn out was people that look like me, black people, brown people along younger people, right? because of that mess of turn out, they're trying to change the rules of the game because they get, they know that they can win in a fair election. they know they can't win if we count every vote if we let people vote freely. so that's what's exactly at the, at the heart of this for what they're trying to do is that they're trying to create changes that in some cases with last, at least 10 years. and maybe even more, maybe even become permanent. because once you have a minority party and that's what they are, they don't have enough votes in this country. but what they have is that they've changed the rules of the game. and as we've seen all across the world, when a minority party changes the rules of the game changes the structure of how voting gets done and how both get counted, they can establish themselves as a permanent ruling party, even though they don't actually have a majority of the votes, that's what's at risk here in this country. and just quickly, cliff before we can let you go, what are the next steps given efforts to pass voting rights bill is jammed in the senate amendment. yeah, well it did is jail, but it's not over. right. and so there's a process as in place. the leader of, of our senate has said chuck schumer has said that he's going to start a debate on these bills. it is going to come up for a vote is a, one of the things we're believing. one is that we need to keep working. those of us inside the system as well as outside making phone calls, doing rallies, doing hunger strikes, doing marches, keep pushing. that's the 1st part, but the 2nd thing is we believe is that the people that are blocking this unders, mansion and cinema, it's easy to say that you're not going to do something when you don't have to answer questions about it. but when you're in a debate in your senate chambers, and you've got to discuss that with some of your colleagues and defend your position, something that they've not really had to do. we believe that there's still an opportunity for them to be moved. we're still believing and we're going to keep pushing, or i will keep us updated as to how that unfolds. thank you very much for breaking it down for us. cliff albright, the co founder of black, a vote. his met a fun depreciate on ukraine's at form, a president petro power. shank o has appeared in court to deny trays and charges. prosecutors accuse him of financing pro ration separatists in easton ukraine. the hearing in the capital. kiev comes shortly after parish inc. i returned time from ho holland, he says he's innocent of what he calls politically motivated accusations. petro binkowski is a senior fellow at the democratic initiatives foundation, a think tank in ukraine. he says the prosecution has yet to show evidence to support their allegation. the timing for the public is ation really is really wrong, is really not the best time because what you have right now is the threats to the real truth of the russian invasion. and the accusations themselves poorly prepared by the persecutors. and it's not about them blaming for us and using present worth trading with separate is but that he approved a scheme, the trade scheme of transport in energy call from the occupied territories to the government control area. however, still, the prosecutors did not release any kind of evidence that there is a link between the president and the rational separate so that the case is really complex and we're hearing and great also. i wondered, what will be the evidence presented by the persecution? i can only say that in this case, the president will ask you, the current presence of your grand is calling the shots. and in the last years he requested the prosecutors to open up to 2000 and said, criminal cases, all of them are dropped. but right now what we see that these kinds of return and what the prosecutors drive to do in the board. all this, hey look, they created, it only can boast or the popularity sample right now. organizes the badging winterly pick, say, only selected groups will be allowed to attend. next months, games invited spectators will have to speak
