Were live in sudan where thousands of ethiopian refugees who fled fighting a struggling to survive eyeing the rising sea levels. The new satellite blasting off with a mission to keep track of one of the most challenging effects of Global Warming and on fire and small have all the days sport including counting down to kickoff. Its now exactly 2 years to go until qatars world cup, and organizers say preparations have been largely unaffected by the crowd. A virus pandemic. Welcome to the news. A rocket attacks in the Afghan Capital have killed at least 8 people. The interior Ministry Says dozens of people have been injured Victoria Gate and he has the latest schoolgirls running for their lives after a rocket lands near their school. Part of a coordinated attack on the capital, kabul. More than 20 rockets landed in residential areas near the green zone, where many embassies are based. Witnesses say the attack during the morning rush hour was time to cause maximum damage. This over the what they call it was morning and we were leaving our home when an explosion happened 2 of my sisters and my mother wounded. So we took them to hospital and we thought it was around 9 am. Rockets hit the bakery, wounding an employee who needed hospital treatment. Lots of shopkeepers are going to suffer financially because of this. The taliban has denied responsibility for the attack, but it came as the u. S. Secretary of state might pompei you arrived in catalyst capital. Doha. He said you will to talk to both Afghan Government and taliban negotiate is involved in peace talks that i know has been behind recent attacks on the capital gunmen stormed kabul university. 3 weeks ago, at least 22 people were killed. The government says, in saturdays attack, fighters fired the rockets from the back of 2 trucks. Its investigating how the vehicles managed to enter the city and gets an ear to the heavily fortified green, zone, a victory gate and be aljazeera. While for more on the u. S. , secretary of state compares visits and consulates, speeches, stuffing, decorah correspondent, who joins me now from the city where the meeting is taking place. Of course, the secretary of state has been meeting the emir and other top officials. And one assumes that ill be discussing a whole range of topics, but keeping an eye of course of whats happened in kabul this morning on the stalled Afghan Government talks with the taliban. Here in doha. Yes my compares to you to meet with the Afghan Government side in less than half an hour or so from now and then an hour off of that for the taliban side. These 2 sides. Of course, as you, you know, mentioned decades of war, there is no trust even just now weve had a statement from the taliban condemning some of the voices in kabul that have a call from the u. N. Security council to extend sanctions on some of the Senior Leadership of the taleban so you know, it just goes to show how difficult its going to be, how much secretary of state will pay. You can do what he talks about sides. Of course he will be urging them to get to the serious discussions that hasnt even started yet. These talks were great in september, and its been about a pools of a month, and theyre still talking about the technicalities when it comes to what kind of rules. Its not make new who is going to govern these talks. So huge challenges ahead. I think, you know, its going to take a very long time and a lot of patience went out to be ironed out. But certainly the message for sure from the secretary of state to both sides, to really get to the table and Start Talking about the serious issues. But of course of the pressing issues that both sides want to push for. But israel wants to talk about the blockade. Yes, i think the concern for your state is coming with a couple of topics. And of course this is an administration my comparison civically very much. This is a country that has good relations with iran. In fact, when it comes to the blockade that, of course there will be discussing as well the gulf located. Thats one of the demands of the blockade in countries that cutter cuts, ties with iran, something it has refused to do. So they are, of course on opposite ends of many subjects that they will be discussing, but they are allies. Qatar hosts the biggest u. S. Base in the region. But of course this is also did ministration, that is outgoing. So hale, i think also interestingly, the mayor of qatar has called president elect joe biden to congratulate him on his weight. And of course, this administration has yet to concede to so i think whether they discuss that or not, we dont know. But of course, serious issues being discussed years, but yes, it is not going, but theyre still trying to, clearly with this tour of 7 countries, trying to make some kind of different stuff together in doha for us. Think its a, lets get more on this from kate clark. Shes the code director of the Afghanistan Analysis Network and joins me now live via skype from london. Good to have you with us on the program. And if we just look at the attack that happened in kabul earlier on on saturday, if its not the taliban because theyve denied involvement, then the most recent suspects would be, i saw at the top of the list, whoever it is, is being given space to operate while there seems to be a sort of security and intelligence vacuum. Yeah, i mean what, i would stress, you cant take taliban and i once they start you in the past, theyve denied attacks that we traced to individual taliban commanders or some count them out. If they are problematic from a propaganda point here, which this is clearly, then if it was the taliban, they wouldnt be accepting. And as you say, it could also be the islamic state. Dying could also be behind it. We just dont know at the moment, i think what you can say, i mean a couple of things. One, it shows riccis and security that are just breathtaking, yet again, that this sort of weaponry get into the city. And secondly, its part of a trend where greater violence in the city is mainly assassinations. Magnetic phones can even at a time when taliban are said that they wont be launching attacks on incentives. And weve seen a rise in what looked to be insurgent attacks and determined then large. Its kind of a hoax that concept time that someone has been saying they are, theyre not, theyre not one of them contacts me. There seems to be a very well coordinated attack, certainly today. And so this group or groups are able to get arms and munitions into the country into the city. They must be very well financed and one wonders where that sort of money chain where that supply chain starts and stops. Well, fortunate, theres always money for fighting in afghanistan. If you look at the taliban, for example, theyre very, very efficient system to collect what they call taxes from people. Of course, the money doesnt go into education or health or development thats will still funded by the government and by international donors. It goes into fighting that war and its efficient and its, its widespread even, you know, weve heard examples of people on the outskirts of town are part of that he had to pay money to the taliban, so its across the country. This is the drugs, of course, its huge money going to all sites that will be farmed out. And indeed of course, it would be fair to say that there are sort of many tribes and warlords beyond the taliban that might be insulted, that theyre not part of this Peace Process or this negotiation process between the, Afghan Government, the taliban, and dare i say the u. S. , theyre making their voices heard on saturday if it is indeed a disparate group. I actually really disagree with that. If you look at the government side and it doesnt really reflect all political groupies, its very diverse ethnic. Mary gentle isom woman that has technocrat representatives from the ultimate you do groups and the groups like dostum still bash so much and so no one actually disagree with you for all its faults. The government, the public has much to put together a team that does reflect that message actually much more than the type of monsters that all male that all men thought of religious education not just in the south market crashed in the so i dont think i dont think thats the issue in this particular case, where we see what happens, its always good to get a whole range of views and yours is very valuable as to take part. Thats very much for joining us from london. Plenty more ahead here on the news hour, including over 1000. 00 cases in sweden saw why the government says it will not change. Its no lockdown approach to fast so prepares to pick its next president on sunday. But many people are scared of heading to the polls. And the worlds top 4 ranked mens tennis players will. All feature in the a. T. P. Final semifinals in london far will be here with all of the sports action later the United Nations says a full scale humanitarian crisis continues to unfold in northern ethiopia. The un has called on warring sides to halt fighting immediately. So more aid come be delivered and refugee safe zones can be set up the government and the 2 great Peoples Liberation front, both accuse each other of killing civilians and airstrikes and indiscriminate attacks during the 2 week long offensive. Lets bring in paul sun. Hes the head of the program at the world. Food Program Joins me now from gathering in sudan, thanks for joining us. Sometimes seeing the situation for yourself is far better than being in an office. How big is the task to help those arriving from ethiopia . But the task is big current, the human nature reports that some 35000 people have a right as of yesterday and probably more of coming across the border today. What were doing right now is trying to assist them at the Border Crossing and then trying to continue to distance once they set them in one of the camps with longer term assistance. So initially we do have to contribute to your nature or for hot meals. And we also provide them at high energy biscuits. Once they settle in the camp setting, we provide them with a monthly ration that should sustain them. Here we also have to work with partners rather than human nature working with the minister of health. We do need to work on the nutrition programs to make sure that women and children get the right. Attrition should have suffered before or was coming here when we actually talked to various other aid agencies earlier in the week they talked about, for example, is only one very small medical clinic. What sort of medical needs infrastructure are required at the moment . Are you able to bring those into what is quite a remote part of sudan . Right. I think both the United Nations agencies that work on the medical side n. G. O. S are working hard right now to cover the medical needs. W p focuses right now on food and nutrition, but just stick support to some extent. Also providing city support for agencies responding to this crisis. While you are trying to feed and look after the many thousands of people that are coming, i see that youre wearing a mask. So 19 must be also top of the agenda. Must be in the top, your mind as well as your colleagues when youre dealing with so many people it is certainly a big concern for all of us for those who are responding to the crisis post, most importantly, for those who are arriving here, you see youve probably seen the footage, the situation is not helping the people are crowded. People are, its not a situation that is perfect, be aware or approach or address the issues or cohabit but hopefully things settle down the situation. Real people have their own accommodation. There will be more social distancing, etc. But at this initial stage, you probably have seen it. Its not ideal. Its a huge task and a huge burden for the host country sudar. How much help are you getting from the let me say this. I have been berry impressed by the host population, the people in living in the areas where the refugees are going. They have been providing their own food and sharing that theyve been sharing clothes and then shelter as well, which is a great, you know, they opened their doors to the refugees, which is think credible. The government of sudan is also trying to facilitate. But this is a task that needs all hands on deck, the international community, whether that is United Nations or n. G. O. S, the rest of humanitarian. Human Community Needs to address this together in a coordinated fashion called paulson from the world food program. Thanks so much for joining us. Thank you very much. Not the resurgence of covert 19 across the globe has many countries tightening restrictions. Polands Prime Minister is urging families to cancel travel plans, schools, bars, restaurants and theaters will remain closed until after christmas. Canadas largest city toronto is going back into lockdown. The Prime Minister says a normal holiday is out of the question. In order to get through this winter without overwhelming our health systems. Without losing too many more of our loved ones. We need to do one last big effort these coming months and it starts with the coming weeks of really tightening up, which is why im back here in front of my house telling you its time. Its time to tighten up singapore and hong kong office. Spawning the launch of their quarantine free travel bubble after a spike in infections in hong kong and japan is scaling back. Its government backed campaign to encourage Domestic Tourism and daily cases have reached record numbers for 3 straight days. While in sweden, the rise in infections is putting its no lockdown model under pressure, and for the 1st time the government has rejected advice from the Public Health agency poll results more from stockholm. Commuter rush begins in stockholm with little evidence of concern about swedens mounting coronavirus crisis. Its just a couple of months since the decision not to impose a lockdown seemed to be working. But with the 2nd wave of the pandemic building momentum, it could be a long cold winter ahead. For the approach that has been dubbed the swedish model. A record 7240 new cases were reported on friday, with 66 more deaths taking the toll to almost 6 and a half 1000 who have been getting more and more patient visit procedures for taking care of them there. Late with that intro, we are far behind. Swedens government is starting to impose tougher restrictions. No more than 8 people can now attend a fishbowl event, while pubs and restaurants abound from serving alcohol after 10 pm. There are new limits on visits to old peoples homes. After infections again started spreading rapidly in places where thousands died in the spring or fall, the government will continue to take all necessary decisions to reduce the spread of infection. Swedens strength in this crisis, however, is that every person takes their responsibility. Does the juice for their fellows, and for our country . About personal responsibility has been at the heart of swedens fight against the pandemic. But now many are questioning whether people should be forced to comply with tougher measures, including having to wear masks something that most swedes have so far shunned. Thats after the Royal Swedish Academy of sciences released a report showing that masks could prevent the spread of infection indoors, as we found so far, yearly supports the fact that its just really close to 5 in the main issue. Its not that its actually preventing this spread by us, but thats in contrast to recommendations made by the Public Health agency and the chief epidemiology. Understand yell, who has repeatedly said masks, can make people more careless about social distancing. Not everyone has listened with masks, sales tripling at one pharmacy chain in november. Even if the government does bow to pressure on masks, that could be as far as its prepared to go. The socalled swedish model may be under some pressure, but a full lockdown is unlikely, and perhaps even impossible. Such a measure is guarded against by the swedish constitution that protects citizens, freedoms, even in a time of crisis. Paul recent aljazeera stock hard pandemic is expected to be a top priority at the g 20 summit which got in the way just a short time ago. Saudi arabia is hosting the virtual event, but theyre hoping calls to boycott the meeting in protest against the kingdoms human rights record. Are diplomatic editor james bays joins me now from the u. N. In new york. And really, james lots to look out for. We begin with the saudi hosts, and of course its a Virtual Meeting there in the limelight for many a wrong reason, the war in yemen, human rights to name, but 2, but really covert 900 seems to be topping the agenda for the moment. Yes, absolutely. And in the last few minutes, we saw king solomon of saudi arabia, open the g 20 summit, with his crown prince mohamed, been summoned beside him. He described this as an extraordinary year. There are many though that do not believe that the g. 20 so far has risen to that challenge. They say the g. 20 should do more perhaps as it did in 20082009, where it was credited with helping the situation in the last financial crisis. The areas that i think people are looking closely at was one, is debt suspension. There is suspension already in place, but some want it to be extended in scope and in generation. And the other aspect is trying to get the vaccine to everyone on earth. And theyll need much more money for that. It is a very different sort of g 20 watching the start of it moments ago. It didnt look like a normal summit. It looked like a zoom call between World Leaders who are attending this g. 20. That means its truncated. There are the normal, theres not the normal pomp. Theres not the formal dinners, theres not all the bilateral meetings that normally take place. And that means its not such an occasion for saudi arabia, which i think had been hoping to use this to rehabilitate its reputation, which has been battered by its own human rights abuses the war in yemen. The murder of Jamal Khashoggi and continued repression at home in saudi arabia. And of course, one of the sort of these side issues or signs is that the relations between saudi and turkey have warmed slightly for the sake of the g 20 meeting. But its a very tentative peace. Yeah, theres been a call between president and king in recent hours ahead of the start of the g 20. Saudi very much relishes the fact that is the only arab member of this group. But of course, turkey is another regional power, its a member. And on so many issues these 2 countries do seem to be at loggerheads. They do not agree on many, many things. For example, of the situation right now in libya is a good example. Another more recent example, i think is they have very different views of the way forward on the israeli, palestinian conflict. One area where perhaps they might have some common ground. I suspect both countries a somewhat nervous of how theyre going to be seen by an incoming biden administrator. We should see what happens in transpires in the coming hours and days for the moment. James, thanks for joining us from new york protesters in thailand, demonstrating again to keep up the pressure on the government, demanding changes to the education system, which they say is archaic. Student led rallies have been held since july, calling for a new constitution reforms to the mall a key. And the removal of Prime Minister play with china shop was at the demonstrations in bangkok another day. I dont know what words will stay here on the street. Bangkok today is the turn of the pots to host those, many of whom are under the age of 82. 00. Despite the fact theyve shot down a major commercial hub, the no sign of the police today the atmosphere is that much more relaxed. Unlikely that were going to see the tensions on the belly or in the wake. But this is a week where those tensions have ratcheted up, particularly off the clashes on tuesday between antigovernment protesters and yellow shit from a kid on the police that sent more than 50 people to the hospital. And those protests are likely to be repeated again. After the protest, leaders announced that this coming wednesday going to head to the ground from the, g. B. Or which is of fundamental importance to them. Only kate, it is. Its enormous. Well, those marches are lucky to be the 1st they defended by the police and the bell. See the amount of yellow shirts coming out on the street. Many better looking still in the clashes, but once again, the rock. These protests the dissent, rather its a model 6000000 voters and became a fan so all preparing to elect their next president on sunday. But theres concern that armed groups may target the polls. In the past year, theres been a rise in violence and attacks on civilians. More than 2000 people have been killed in a 1000000 have been forced out of their homes and with interest. Like many broken arbors. Brahimi is worried as election day. He is. The resident of war good to go has witnessed 2 deadly attacks and broken up fossils capital and fears. They could be another year despite real threat of violence on election day. He says he will cast his ballot. For me, the choice is democracy. All this violence is totally unnecessary. Whoever wants power should see the peoples mandate not through violence. This is attacking 2016 mark to the beginning of a series of acts of violence by local militias and foreign fighters. Some of them crossing in from neighboring mali. More than 2000 people have been killed in these attacks, and over a 1000000 have been displaced, has survived 2 attacks in his village. After 3rd, he said he has had enough. The attackers broke down my brothers door and shot him. My son was there and traumatized. We fled to safety and to get help for my son. In 2015, birkenau fossils army was weakened by a purge following an attempted coup. Theyve narrowed down the choice of targets to military and government officials because they think that will cripple government institutions. Military is ill equipped to deal with these attacks, but foreign help is arriving to support local efforts. But that support is clearly not enough. At least in brooklyn, a fossil and its citizens are worried over the recent spike in attacks. The last 5 years have been the countrys cut. We cant go to the other side. The country is divided. We have never seen it like this. In the 1st 6 months of the year, more than 4600, people have been killed by armed groups in booking, a fossil miley in the year. And that is despite the presence of 820000, Strong International force deployed to help restore peace in 5 countries. Well, nearly 1600. 00 villages sacked security is now the Common Campaign theme for all Political Parties and their candidates. And its hard to say if the candidates can deliver on the promises, the better voters or security. But edris aljazeera time for the now heres rob. The eastern med is still churning or i was there is of low pressure and thats recently produced flooding in alexandria, not extensive or excessive. Been enough just to have a way of crossing the road. Started different to normal. This is a roundabout in the north. Now this is just the latest in a series of Little Things that generate themselves over the eastern med go across saudi arabia. Unfortunate the result of that is that saudi arabia is that been gassed to yet another plague of locusts. Now this is the latest line thats coming through. Saudi arabia says todays whether the head of it, which is really iraq and then into the west or any matters, is cold enough or to give snow on the high ground. Obviously its rain for most rain showers and behind it a few more shots come to live on and maybe still the xandra. Most of avian preachers looking far in, but that is head sized in the arabian sea. Theres been a world of class that i think will develop into a proper tropical proper tropical depression, giving significant rain bridges to circuitry and then the whole of africa. Now, this is somalia, really and easily flooded by the sort of things happens. If this develops a bit more runs up to the gulf of aden, the rainfall cost territory might eventually reach djibouti. The focus of the djibouti is indeed a sherry one. Not a very windy one. Thanks for puff, fast all the sea levels, rising. Scientists hope a new patient sites like will help answer that question. It will try to insight today from california as part of a joint project between nasa and the European Space agency, rob reynolds reports. Its Developers Say the ocean measuring satellite sentinel 6 will provide irrefutable evidence of how the seas are rising due to human caused Global Warming. The satellite, which resembles a large gadget festooned orbiting doghouse, can quantify ocean rise to within a centimeter. The main concept is that as a radar altimeter on board, and it fires a pulse of the Ocean Surface and you measure how long it takes that also to go out and come back. And from that you can him for the height of the satellite about the oceans surface. And so when you take the height of the satellite and you subtract off that radar measurement of the height of the satellite above the Ocean Surface, then you have a measurement of the height of the ocean. About one 3rd of ocean rises due to thermal expansion. Water that absorbs heat, expands like mercury in an Old Fashioned thermometer. The rest is due to the melting of glaciers and ice caps in greenland, the antarctic and elsewhere. So these 2 elements to get america would be the product of something of 6, very relevant for, for the society, for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has projected that oceans could rise more than 60 centimeters by 2100 endangering millions. If not billions of people who live near the sea or in storm prone areas, scientists working on the sentinel 6 program say it will provide unambiguous data to grab the public and policymakers attention. Bills going up, we can show people the data, and id like to think that, that most people out there can still be informed by looking at, you know, real data. Its not some cloud model thats predicting whats going to happen. Its actually measurements of whats really changed, whats changing, and why climate is changing because were putting c o 2 and other Greenhouse Gases into the atmosphere. And we need to start moving on to Renewable Energy sources and stop burning fossil fuels. Cental sixs mission will last 5 years, a messenger in outer space bearing a message to humanity that it must change its ways. Rob reynolds aljazeera, still ahead here on aljazeera, under lockdown and out of hope. The warning from Mental Health experts about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and in Sport National have reached the Major League Soccer postseason in style. Those details coming along to land in under a year coverage 19 has altered our societies and exposed deficiencies in political, social, and economic structure of capitalism is the pandemic. That is the root cause of so much of the suffering apps and the data which show could literally save our lives, can be the headline, has the pandemic given us the chance to reevaluate our world, all hail the lockdown coming soon on aljazeera. American people have finally folk in america as i see it when america is off balance or will become more dangerous to the world. Is looking at us with a mixture of sadness and grief. With the election behind us will the Republican Party dump trucks to the feel we can take on us politics and society . Thats the bottom line. The us is always of, in fact the people, the world, people Pay Attention to walk on here. And i do see it is very good to bring the news to the world from here. Oh oh. But about you watching aljazeera news are with me. Its the home run a reminder of our top stories multiple rocket attacks in several parts of the Afghan Capital have killed at least 8 people. One rocket landed near a school in kabul, forcing students to run from the building. I saw has claimed responsibility. The resurgence of covert 19 has many countries tightening restrictions. Canadas largest city toronto is going back into lockdown. The pandemic is expected to be the main topic of discussion at the g. 20 summit, being hosted by saudi arabia and protesters in thailand, demonstrating again to keep up the pressure on the government. Student led rallies have been held since july, calling for a new constitution reforms to the monarchy and the removal of the Prime Minister. Donald translators to term to overturn the u. S. Election result appears to be slipping away. Michigans Republican Leaders met with him at the white house, but said there was no new information that would change joe bidens victory in the state. Trump is reportedly putting pressure on politicians and republican run states to ignore the popular vote and send delegates to the Electoral College who will install him as president al official reports now from washington. D. C. Thank you very much. The event at the white house was to talk prescription prices, but donald trump couldnt help talking about the election claiming pharmaceutical companies, delayed news of a covert vaccine to her temple. It eclipsed. Big pharma, ran millions of dollars of negative advertisements against me during the campaign. Which i won by the way, but you know, find that almost 74000000 votes. We had big pharma guesses we had to mediate against us. We had big check against us. We had a lot of dishonesty against us, while joe biden spent his birthday meeting with Democratic Congressional leaders to talk postelection plans. Donald trump was meeting republicans from michigan to the white house denying reports the president wants them to stop the state certifying bidens when there he routinely meets with lawmakers from all across the country. But one democrat from michigan says, this is anything but a routine meeting. Joe biden, one just did michigan, but a large and 14 times greater endowment truck when our state 4 years ago, the president is trying to, i dont know what word you call it, cheat his way to victory by pressuring local officials. After the meeting, the 2 republicans said it had no new information to change joe bidens victory in the state. Adding the result certification process should be free from threats and intimidation. And joe bidens legal team called it an abuse. Of course, the use of office. Its an open attempt to intimidate election officials. Georgia is the latest state to certify a joe Biden Victory after a manual recount of 5000000 votes. He becomes the 1st democrat to win the president ial race in the state since 1992. There are 2 recounts underway in counties in wisconsin, but its unlikely they will change the result there. President elect joe biden know stands on 306 Electoral College votes. Exactly the same number. Donald trump achieved 4 years ago when he claimed a landslide victory. Alan fischer aljazeera at the white house. Evan runs and nick is an assistant professor in International Relations at nanyang technological university. He says the president s behavior is a threat to national security. The realization that this is over is increasingly permeating the holdouts in the Republican Party. But ever so slowly and there are a few more voices you see some of the, sort of the more moderate reasonable characters in the party. People like senator mitt romney, senator ben sasse, of nebraska being a little bit more overt in their criticism of the president. But its still laughably minor in comparison is sort of it when you recognize the regis misbehavior that the president is engaging in. Its the sort of behavior that 2 bit dictators of banana republics engage in that the u. S. State department routinely condemns for that sort of behavior. So this is were really in uncharted territory now in terms of this president s behavior. But we shouldnt be all together surprised given the manner in which hes comported himself over the last 4 years in office. Transitioning from one administration to another, especially from one from from the administration. One party to another is a massive undertaking. I mean, if you look at just the department of defense alone, its the largest agency, the largest employer in the world. So the extent to which a transition is seamless allows the Incoming Administration to better deal with emergent crises and, and other sorts of domestic or International Problems that occur in the bin. Its very early months. And so, given that we are, that the u. S. Is already deeply in mashed in a terrible domestic and international crisis. In the face of the covert, 1000. 00 pandemic, every minute counts. And this and for the transition to be delayed. As a result of the president s personal pique or ego bruising is, is really upsetting. Mental Health Experts in the u. K. Are warning that the number of people with Mental Illnesses has increased since the start of the kovac 19 pandemic. And as winter sets in and more restrictions are introduced, there are fears that up to 20 percent of the population may soon need some extra support needs. Barker reports, suicide has been very close on probably 3 or 4 times to in the course of my life. Julian harrison remembers the day he was prepared to die, lost in the deepest reaches of depression. I was on the middle of a bridge, i was contemplating, throw myself into the water and then think it might well thats it. No one will fire me. Ill drift out to sea and that will be the end of it. He now teaches others how to cope with mental illness. The number of those in crisis is soaring because of covert 19. Change is something that, for lots of people i think with mental illness, its a really difficult thing to, to, to adjust to the perverse thing i think was that actually have was that ive never been afraid of covert itself. What scares me at the time when it 1st happened, is how the church, how you have a changing society. The pandemic is putting people under a crushing pressure. The uncertainty of it all is making people, physically and mentally. Charities in the police have warned of a rising tide of distress. People with existing Mental Health problems are getting worse than others. Never had issues in the past. And now in despair. According to research by the u. K. Center for Mental Health, a staggering 10000000 people, almost 20 percent of the population will need either new or extra help as a direct consequence of the crisis. One and a half 1000000 of those are children and teenagers. We know that many people are being treated for the direst people reach at this time. People who lose if its not going to be straight away, only Mental Health. And we really may well see kind of be increasing need to help pay for the next year. As those things begin to affect people psychologically those worst affected from disadvantaged backgrounds and discriminated against communities, stockport in the north, west of england as the accolade of the most depressed place in britain. Its also one of the most deprived on a street full of shuttered shops. The only thing opens a Crisis Center offering quick access to those who fall in through the cracks. The commune have enough, but im not speaking to anyone for 4 weeks. Sometimes. You know, thats, you know, and its not getting as a house when your dissolute sits saying the same for was, you know, they, they, they, they have today. Health charities are crying out for extra Government Support for Mental Health. But state farms are already overstretched. Shielding the economy from ruin even when it comes. A successful vaccine will only be a partial 1st step in restoring the Nations Health needs barkha, aljazeera, stockport. Donald also is a psychologist specializing in personality and behavior and joins me now via skype from london. Good to have you with us, mr. Olson on the program. I mean, how much pressure has been put on sort of Mental Health professionals and patients really to deal with remote counseling during the lockdown in the u. K. Cause in some cases they cant get that access. Yes, its a measurable i think weve now reached up another notch with further restrictions and lockdowns. I think about our lives no longer about the coronavirus out there. Its a battle that were all. All of us are waging within ourselves who are actually fighting our own minds. At the moment and the negative messaging that we keep giving ourselves, which is a, an ancient survival mechanism that now is doing us harm. And that its telling us to be depressed to be lonely, to feel that things are not going well and never will. And what weve got to learn to do is to step back and interrupt that negative voice and try and turn it around and said, we need to actually Start Playing positive mind games with ourselves so that we can counteract, argue with and defeat the voice that keeps telling us that things are not going to get better or that we are in a bad place. There is a, there is a stark reality, isnt there . Not just for people in the United Kingdom, but for many globally. When theyre dealing with this isolation and more and more governments as were hearing, as we get into the winter months, as we get into the main festive season, saying, dont go out, dont socialize, try to keep yourself to yourself and to your immediate family. Its a difficult task, isnt it . Its very difficult. And of course you have something called sad seasonal, affective disorder which will happen to many people when the like starts getting shorter and the days darker as is happening now. And so you compound that on top of whats already happening, and i think the biggest thing we can do to help ourselves right now is to be aware to be aware of whats happening in our own brains with the kind of negative messaging were getting. And to try to counteract it and even play games with ourselves to turn a negative into a positive. So we say to ourselves, ok, this isnt going on forever. How can i best utilize this time when im in isolation or lockdown . What can i do to make myself feel better . And one of the things that were suffering from right now is sensory deprivation. Our senses are starved and we need in fact, to feed our senses. For instance, the sense of smell directly linked to the brain. The only sense that is that gives us feedback into our memories, our emotions, even smelling something nice can help us feel better. Listening to music can lift us up, you know, doing things that feed our senses every day and give us a current boost. Because sometimes its very hard to fight our own brains. Weve got to learn to step back from that negative loop and try and interrupt it. I think it is very different, very difficult to explain that to younger members, i would say of our, of our viewership, but certainly there are parents watching who might want some your tips about how to deal with this issue for young children. As for those that have parents that are in care homes or at a distance or have to isolate because they cant physically see each other. What are your suggestions for those 2 disparate groups of people . Well, you know, for children its difficult for them to take on these things that im discussing. Its for parents to be reassuring to constantly engaged in communication and chat to try and find out whats going on in the childs mind. Very difficult for children. Find it hard to articulate whats wrong, and they may not want to verbalize their worries, but for the parents to be there and to set a nice routine for them so that they feel secure and safe, and that they feel they have the ability to talk for people in care homes, you know, weve forgotten how to write correspondence, sending a card or a postcard, something that will allow the person to feel that theyre still thought about. Will do wonders if you cant visit. If you cant see them on zoo or you cant reach them very often on phone or, you know, put pen to paper and send them a little note because that will perk up somebody immeasurably in terms of the problem or the issue that is growing. Certainly within the United Kingdom is that many do feel isolated. Theyre not quite sure how theyre going to deal with the upcoming festivities because of the christmas is just around the corner. Is a deeply religious time of the, especially for families who want to get together. And thats another big banks, doesnt it . That citee certainly in the u. K. Is dealing with at the moment. Well, it may be that were going to have to make a sacrifice this year and that christmas will only extend to the people in our bubble. But i would say if thats the case, if that happens to turn out to be true, lets make the most of it. Lets make that most of the time that were allowed, you know, even under restrictions we can find things to be happy for and grateful for lets, lets do it and know that its not forever and maybe plan for ourselves. Something to look forward to in the future. When this is all behind us, because we cant give up hope, and we must step back and see the whole picture and say were doing this for a reason. Were doing this to protect each other. And this is how were showing our love at christmas, and maybe really will sort out whats deeply meaningful and personal to us and important to us from the stuff that isnt. So maybe this is a time that will help us to do that. Lets hope so. Donna dawson, always good to get your insights into sense for much for joining us from london. Thank you. A listening post special on aljazeera the the all talk about time for sport on his far so thank you so much of the balls. Biggest tournaments will make its middle east debut in 2022. The world cup kicks off in cats arent exactly 2 years time, but the coronavirus pandemic has affected preparations for both teams and organizers. Joanna gash or oscar reports this giant 10 structure is al bate stadium. In arabic, it translates to the house and will be home to 60000 fans for the opening game of the 22 inch to world cup. If the current virus pandemic lifts in time, the Global Health crisis hit, just as cattle was finalizing its preparations. Overnight in the pandemic has affected the entire world that the not only affect the sporting industry. Our preparations have. Luckily, not been affected by the pandemic. And we see that the pandemic is as well under control here in qatar. So thats, thats a very good thing. Qualifies around the world have been delayed and test events have been cancelled. But even if the virus is still with us in 2 years time, cattle has now had experience of holding a tournament in a bio security bubble. The Asian Champions League is currently underway here across several. The news teams are coming from abroad. And also the teams from within the top clubs from the door would go through a systematic approach where they tested 1st before entering the dead. Show those coming from abroad tested in the airport. Then they got to the how did they check and, and then they wait for the presence of the testing. And then we do have a pita testing for all every 3 to 6 days. Its been a very different experience for us from the get go. We, when we got on the flight, we had to obviously wear the face mosques and then straight away we had or around our faces, a hole in our floor. We came to the hotel where the staff have been quarantining, who i think 2 weeks already. So everyone here in the bubble has been in the bubble. For 2 weeks before us arriving australian club, perth, glory tested out the Education City world cup stadium in their 1st group match and were impressed that stadium probably the best day of march biden. I think we were the 1st ones to use a so you know, you could have got a better pitch, the changing room. You know, as i said, the pitch, the bench is all top top the studies 5 to be 8 stadiums are already finished and some have already held matches. But the hard work continues to others. Like here at the salle stadium which will host the final on december the 18th 2022, where the new world champions will be crowned with 2 years to go and coded 19 vaccines on the way. Organizers remain confident that the 1st middle east world cup will be safe and successful. Join against russia. Aljazeera dont have any. Richardson has more from outside the stadium. Finished in just waiting to be officially in all great city. It has been quite a journey for all involved since the for announced in 2010, that council will be hosting the middle easts 1st world cup along the way in 27, seen a political blockade was imposed on katsav by neighboring countries, including saudi arabia, the u. A. E. , bahrain, and the jets, but organizers have managed to get through. Those complexities are in a position now where all lights at the stadiums will be finished with a year to go before the big kickoff in november 2022. The big walkout of course, has been coronavirus, and one of the things cats are, lacks experience in hosting tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of visiting fans. They did have a taste of it last year when they held the Club World Cup in december. But this year, well, all bets have been off a big date for the diary, i think, will be this Time Next Year when cats will be hosting a pan arab solomons involving 22 different countries. That seems like a great opportunity to test out systems at the airports for getting fans in and out of stadiums safely and also to stress test things out the new metro train system. I think everyone here hoping that by 2022 it will be the 1st truly global sporting get together in a post coronavirus world. Well, many of those world cup stadiums are being used currently. Distain, the Asian Champions League, chinas beijing f. C. Seoul to go top of group from and one alan douglas.
