Time far as small have all the days sports including pressure mounts on Manchester United boss only going to stall sure as his side loses again this time in istanbul in the Champions League. We begin this news hour as americans are waking up to another day of uncertainty over who will be the next president right now it is 5 am on the east coast and in the u. S. State of georgia these are live pictures from there where vote counting as you can see has been going through the night its an extremely close race and a traditionally republican states and Donald Trumps initial lead has been steadily falling georgia is one of the one of several states where republicans are fighting legal challenges over this election. Lets take a look at the state of play biden has already flipped michigan and wisconsin that. 4 years ago the democratic candidate now has the projected total of 264 Electoral College votes while trump is projected to win 214 remember a candidate needs 270 to win here in yellow you can see the states that are still being divided and decided nevada in the west georgia of course North Carolina as well and of course pennsylvania. Well the Associated Press is projecting a win for biden in arizona but this has been disputed by the campaign we are following the Associated Press count here at Al Jazeera English bidens lead over trump there has narrowed in recent hours in that battleground state is worth a crucial 11 Electoral College votes well as i mentioned vote counting is still ongoing in georgia trump leads there by about 28000 votes but what might help joe biden is that most of the remaining votes are from atlanta and its suburbs which lean democratic we are expecting more days up from there in the coming hours well North Carolina is one of the states where trump has already claimed victory but the result is actually still too close to call in this state mail in ballots postmarked by election day are accepted until november 12th and we are also still waiting on pennsylvania the state where joe biden was born trumps lead here is again shrinking the remaining mail ballots are mostly from the democratic leaning cities of philadelphia and pittsburgh getting by them the chance to catch up pennsylvania is another state where trump has also filed a lawsuit and there is no valid biden is narrowly in the lead this Western State has 6 electoral votes that would be enough to get him to the magic number of 270. Teams are still in place across the United States our White House Correspondent kimberly healthcare in washington d. C. For us mike hanna and joe bidens home state of delaware and we also have rob reynolds hes standing by to discuss nevada another close count but 1st how do you call all the developments so far. Former Vice President joe biden projecting confidence he will be the next president and he may have taken a step closer he says at a press to clarion hes won the states of wisconsin and michigan giving him more Electoral College votes and an easier path to that you 70 that will get him to the white house and now after a long night of county its clear that were one new enough states to reach 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency im not here to clear that weve won but i am here to report when the count is finished we believe we will be the winners but u. S. President donald trump is demanding a recount in wisconsin after falling short by around 20000 votes even his most ardent supporters doubt that will change anything former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker tweeting out a recount and 2016 trumps numbers went up by 131 and the counting continues in the states that will decide the election with state officials asking for patience give the Public Servants the opportunity to do their job and what i will tell you is that karen pennsylvania were going to follow the law and we will respect the will of the people and the crop her victory will be certified based on who got more votes the president is suing to stop the counting in some states his surrogates saying falsely that the election is being stolen to win for a republican to win here how many votes do we have to be at 400000 is not enough with 80 plus percent counted i think theres only 14 percent of the vote to go. If you think were stupid you think were false the president is complaining on twitter theyre finding biden votes all over the place in pennsylvania wisconsin and michigan so bad for country to be clear theyre not finding ballots but counting ones that come in on time according to state laws and there is a question about whether the Postal Service run by a trump loyalist interfered in getting ballots delivered on time define a federal judges order tuesday to do a sweep for ballots they refused potentially leaving hundreds of thousands not counted the one thing this election has clearly shown america is a nation divided it really does seem like people live in 2 different realities given like the news they consume and who they surround themselves with so i i am not that surprise that a lot of people decided to vote again for a president who has brought us so where we are with several cases winding their way through the courts as the votes are counted and america and the world waits to see who eked out a win in this fractured country. Aljazeera well that speech White House Correspondent candy how could she is watching all the action on fall for us from washington can be so many razor thin margins with all these ongoing counts and some contentious calls for instance in arizona whats the feeling like in the camp at the moment. The feeling is that has been from the beginning with respect to arizona that it is still within reach thats why the president was furious when on Election Night it was called by at least one News Network Fox News network his favorite news network for his rival joe biden so the president feels very confident about that he had a clear public schedule when say that as the same again today thursday we expect that the president is going to do what he did on wednesday and that is continue to work the phones speak with local officials try and figure out if there is still a path to victory now the u. S. President also believing and being very optimistic about the u. S. State of georgia but as you have reported that lead that he has has been narrowing significantly kimberly i see an army of lawyers has already been deployed what legal challenges should we be expecting and when. Well we already know that there are legal challenges that have been launched in a number of states including wisconsin michigan georgia pennsylvania and now the president eyeing other additional states we expect that well have more news about that what we do know is that in some cases these have been hastily filed but then again we also know that both sides have been amassing legal teams for quite some time so you know this could play out quickly it could be slow it depends on the state it depends on the judge but what is certain is that the u. S. President is prepared to go all the way to the Supreme Court or of course he has shifted the balance with his recent appointment of any tony barrett further to the right candy how could that White House Correspondent in washington d. C. Thanks so much ken really well lets now speak to mike hanna hes an bidens home state of delaware and from there he joins us from wilmington mike weve been hearing there from kimberly about what the trump camps been saying what has been the biden camps response to all of this i know they will so have legions of lawyers at the ready to. Well indeed yes but theyve also known for months that this was a possibility they were preparing for trump legal action should the result be close because basically trump to his campaign made no secret of it whatsoever theyve been saying for weeks if not months that if the result is close they will be taking whatever legal avenue they can so what happened with the Biting Campaign is that the top legal man with Joe Biden Bob Bauer hes a former counsel in the Obama White House he set up what its called d a boiler room its a collection of lawyers who got together based in various parts of the country theyve been preparing for exactly this and they are being deployed to counter all of the arguments being presented by the campaign by the various republican committees in various states and various counties now up until this point very few of these actions have produced any tangible results in fact in quite a few cases the courts have dismissed them or the judge has dismissed what have been described at times as frivolous actions the biden of the lawyers themselves say that many of these actions are completely bass is baseless that the trumpet ministration the Trump Campaign is basically writhing around attempting to forestall the inevitable but joe biden himself has stayed clear of these legal matters he has made absolutely clear that he is intent on following the constitution and all these are asking he says is that every vote cast by every american is allowed to count hes leaving it to his lawyers to get down into the trenches and fight with the many lawyers that are being put around the states of by the campaign and other republican committees throughout the country indeed ongoing please there have patients from the Biden Campaign mike hanna and moment in delaware for us thanks very much for. Well lets now speak to rob reynolds he joins us from los angeles where hes keeping an eye on all these very close counts rob nevada its been blue the last 3 elections and if biden gets those electoral votes that makes 270. 00 but thats a mighty narrow margin there. Absolutely it is a very thin margin that joe biden has over donald trump in nevada a state that as you mentioned has been trending democratic in recent years it was carried by Hillary Clinton in 2016 but joe biden is now clinging to a lead of less than 8000. 00 votes thats of like 0. 6 percent of the total votes cast how might that change well its difficult to know how many votes remain uncounted because theyve had is a state that sent a ballot to every eligible voter obviously not all eligible voters decided to vote so its hard to to know exactly how many are outstanding but it is thought that there are tens of thousands of uncounted mail in and absentee ballots many of them from clark county that is the county where Los Las Vegas is located it is the biggest city in the state it is. Traditionally a somewhat of a democratic stronghold so those uncounted ballots could be decisive for joe biden they could increase his lead no one of course knows for sure how that is going to go but again the city is. Tends to vote democratic but very Little Information has been coming out of nevada over the past 24 hours much to the frustration the not only of the candidates but the news media who want to see how this is going to turn out but the officials in clark county the electoral officials there say they will make an announcement but not until thursday morning and rob oh ready as everyones waiting people have been coming out in crowds either to try to stop the count or with the process. Yes in fact there was and is a situation underway in arizona in phoenix where a group of Trump Supporters some of them carrying weapons which is legal to do in that state surrounded the entrance to a Voting Center and they. Chanted and you know generally gave the impression that they believe that the voting was not being counted properly in the they wanted to get inside and observe the sheriffs deputies surrounded the entrances and kept the demonstrators from from entering there were no violence was no violence and there were no arrests another situation however in Portland Oregon where protesters who are demonstrating against President Trumps desire to play this whole matter out in the courts in various states did clash with police there were 11 arrests in portland this is a city that seen a lot of political and civil unrest over the past several months robin and there for us in los angeles well be bringing you more on those protests very shortly thanks so much rob but i do want to move on to georgia spotlight has been on one of of one georgia as well as a number of other states but georgia has typically been a republican stronghold this year the race is extremely tight kemal santa maria takes a look at why georgia is just so key. When we head south in the United States we think republican and georgia is no exception on our 2020 battleground map this is one of the states the democrats are really going to want to flip georgia has 16 Electoral College votes on offer and for years it has been a reliable republican stronghold in fact were just going to have a look at some past results here youll see that the republican candidate has won all 5 previous elections 3 of them there and then the last 2 i would point out that donald trump and 2016 won by just 5 percent against Hillary Clinton mitt romney had an 8 percent win of a barack obama 4 years before lets have a look at the state map of georgia now county by county it gives us an idea of why the democrats have managed to make progress you see here the areas in blue where theyve managed to take over large metropolitan areas including atlanta because georgia has a fast growing population which means it is also becoming increasingly diverse now if you look at the numbers yes white voters still make up 60 percent of eligible voters but africanamericans have more than 30 percent which makes them an influential majority of among nonwhite voters some other issues to think about coronavirus this year which is hit georgia hard it was among the 1st u. S. States to reopen their economy in a scene a lot of infection since and dont forget as well the Fatal Police Shooting of africanamerican men were shot brooks this was in atlanta back in june it led to protests calling for Police Reforms and Racial Justice in all this republican stronghold has become a politically charged competitive race this year where joe biden really does have a fighting chance at victory over donald trump and that is why georgia matters. Well Andrea Gillespie is an associate professor at the department of Political Science at Emory University and she joins us now from Georgia State cup of atlanta under thank you for being with us i find it amazing the fact that georgia is even competitive this year is remarkable in the count now down to this razor thin margin what has changed in your state is this about changing demographics or is it a dissatisfaction with what being republican has meant on the tram. Thank you for having me its a combination of demographic change in the state as well as in fruits organizing by democrats in the states the democrats have been eyeing the change in the composition of the electorate for about a decade now and theyve been predicting that there would one day be at a time when they would once again regain control of some state offices and that they would actually win statewide elections so this is being spurred by the diversification of the population about 30 percent of the electorate is africanamerican but were seeing the that this growth is among Asian Americans and hispanics so those numbers have about doubled since 20 well and since all of these groups trends democratic that is certainly helping to grow the democratic population in the se but also there are Democratic Leaders in the state like 2018 gubernatorial rep stacy abrams who made a point of trying to identify and mobilize democratic voters who might not have been participating in the process so she started this with a Nonpartisan Group that registered voters and this group is actively working towards registering voters of color young voters and these are groups that are likely to be courted by the Democratic Party and so what weve seen is a stronger more robust Democratic Party in the state embracing efforts to do outreach among likely democratic groups and 8 yielding benefits i should also point out that there are also liberal whites who are part of this coolish and so when you know nonwhite make up less than a slightly less than 40 percent of the electorate democrats dont get elected without the support of white voters as well under you spoken there a lot about the racial demographics we did actually will say see trump pick up a substantial number of black folks in georgia which came to many as a surprise i think was that some pushback of a potential pandemic off sounds or something else. Well theyre trying to paint actually did do target
