a reporter killed. from malaysia's prime minister we report on a state election that could determine his future on the national stage. the conservative. who could be the next u.s. supreme court justice donald trump prepares to name his replacement for ruth bader . and in sport the boston celtics are still alive in their n.b.a. playoff series. 6. so that he's been in the job just $27.00 days but the man chosen to be lebanon's next prime minister has now resigned so to the country back to square one. for a new stable government says he simply hasn't been able to form a government of specialists in a country where power is shared between different. sex the former ambassador to germany was named prime minister designate at the end of august and that's when the previous government resigned amid protests in the wake of that huge explosion at beirut port which of course killed 192 people and devastated the capital. well my will soon measure as the efforts to form the government reached their final stages it became apparent to me that this consensus on the basis of which i accepted the national mission in these difficult circumstances in the history of lebanon no longer exists the specifications that i have put forward were doomed to failure out of concern for national unity and its constitutionality and credibility i hereby quit the task of forming a government i wish the person next tasked with forming the government full success in facing the grave danger facing our country people and the economy. let's go straight away to the notice lot of beirut and appointed a month ago under a promise that a government would be quickly in place but it's failed. well yes the prime minister designate must citing it his inability really to form a government not just any government he called it a government to save levanon this country is in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis and there is the immediate for a government capable of carrying out much needed reforms to unlock billions of dollars in aid and was the 1st was really his mission was backed by france the french president manuel visited levanon twice after that devastating explosion at beirut ports he said lebanon's political leaders agreed to form a covenant government within a 2 week deadline that clearly hasn't happened what the deal was trying to do was form a government independent of the influence of political parties the traditional parties that have been governing this country for decades the parties that have been responsible really for running the economy into the ground accused of corruption but what became clear is that that the shop parties hezbollah and amal we have to remember 11 on system of government is based on a power sharing agreement between sects they refused to give up their representation in government they said we will name our ministers in this government which really runs contrary to that the french and. because if the shia sect demands representation in government then all the different other sects so will do the same so that initiative that french initiative which is backed by the international community appears to be dead so what about the implications of this is that in our world next especially for the people living. well for the people of lebanon it means more suffering this is a country where more than 50 percent of the 5000000 population now lives below the poverty line and 30 percent unemployed the currency has collapsed a sharp devaluation of 80 percent in the past few months the majority of the lebanese people earn in the local currency the price of food is soaring the central bank was subsidizing fuel medicine and basic goods but the central bank is warning in a few weeks' time we will not have enough foreign assets to continue to do so which means more poverty in this government there was this need to create this government because the international community has repeatedly said time and time again this corrupt political class cannot continue governing we need an independent government capable and willing to carry out reforms because if the political class does carry out reforms they lose their influence in state institutions they were enriching themselves and the different state institutions absorbing unemployment among their supporters by giving them jobs in the state institutions so it's very difficult for them to give up a political power but if they refuse to pull give up political power then there's no billions of dollars that lebanon needs but some believe what is going on in lebanon is linked to the regional international power struggles this country has long been a playground. parties allied with iran and the other parties allied with with the west and by extension america and the shia parties iran does not want to lose their political power and that is why they keep on insisting men taining their representation in government waiting for the. power outside. thanks very much for the in beirut let's take the song we can speak now to study for how to use an associate editor at the english she joins us on skype also from beirut so you welcome to the program as any was saying the lebanon what lebanon really needs is an independent government to carry out reforms but given the political infighting which is claimed you had to know the victim and it's long been the cause of turmoil in lebanon where is this going to come from. nic as has been discussed from the beginning off your newscast prime minister as it's that down from his position earlier today after failing to come to terms of his will not on the formation of the new government now the shadow if you was the problem with a shard you is not only are presenting a shot and they refused to boss on the finance minister to someone from a different political and the minister of a fine a security has huge significance because it gives power its minister to take decisions in regard to almost everything that is shoot from the council of minister so the problem of the do is that they do not want to let go of this power are taking decisions within the council also minister now this translates into any number of things and the number of issues for it of an on one it's news that lebanon will most likely lose the support from international donors that came as a response to the bailouts last again as we recall as it came into power and light . so to put simply it's a miniature government up in the pan the specialist's this initiative also clearly had and the american backing and savings that's here to the terms of what the u.s. and france is that the country is the think it's last chance literally its last chance to save itself from the economic collapse as well as the social and political trouble it was already facing then it has already mentioned in her report that lebanon has if that security problem and if things proceed as it is a definitely. been on lose that ability to meet their basic needs by the end off 20 exactly this is what sort of jump in the cell it is what the president. the french initiative after all saying the lebanese leaders must come to a clear understanding and failure to change could lead to deepen risk so the question is is that where we're heading no. i'm going to call the president our own saying on darts where heading to had a surely we should be expecting an increase in immigration further economic collapse i'm not sure how much the country can have that further collapse but we're definitely heading there and definitely an increase and corporates which is also actually stated with an increase in crime and the list goes on and on and we look to the extremely challenging question of who will replace but you have to us what it is that this process a very complicated political scene 11 years they have been describing with disparate sex and politics how do you dismantle this and find a way forward honestly the way it seems it seems like the country or the political scene in lebanon is still dominated by the iranian edge on the so even if the next person or whoever comes after it's probably faced the same problem and it seems the odds are given that we have a rare controlled by this iranian edge and lebanon will not be forming any government before the american 2020 alexion. regardless of who takes on the prime minister position you give you a sense that this this could lead to rest on the streets. definitely definitely we're heading to unrest on the streets or it's. a troubling time for lebron we do appreciate your input into the program your expertise thanks very much indeed sorry for how to associate editor at english thank you thanks neal. they're not allowed to protest but that's not stopped thousands of egyptians from demonstrating determined in defiance they march to voice their frustration at the economy poor living conditions and corruption they want the president. out at least 2 people have been killed and many others arrested demolish el as this report. despite the threats of arrest or even death egyptians took to the streets in several areas across the country on friday. they dubbed it the friday of rage to demonstrate their opposition to the rule of opting for tough a c.c. and demand that he resigns. slogans like this say it's outloud don't be scared of sisi has to go and were heard in cairo's one neighborhood. in the giza governorates which has been the epicenter since protests began last sunday police and other security personnel were deployed in force thank you this latest wave of anti-government an anti military rule protests were triggered by cc's decision to demolish entire neighborhoods across egypt under the pretext that the homes were built illegally. these neighborhoods how some of the country's poorest communities who have already been suffering the brunt of a faltering economy unable to cope with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic according to the world bank 70 percent of all egyptians 70 percent live under either under poverty or on the brink of poverty that's a situation that's and hannibal add to that the social and political constraints just yesterday $150.00 appeared for the state security court i'm charges of terrorism because they were protesting in the street we know that terrorism charges in egypt are the ways in which the state clamps down on any bourses of dissent. there were calls to by former army contractor turned opposition figure mohamad ali now an exile for people to demonstrate with september 20th marking one year since similar demonstrations took place against c.c.s. rule that. sisi supporters particularly those who control egypt's media will claim that these protests are marginal and largely in significance but the way in which the state is dealing with the protesters would suggest otherwise. human rights groups like amnesty international have a ready to announce the mass arrests of demonstrators over the past few days. egypt has now witness 6 consecutive days of protests the slogans have all been demanding an end to cc's rule and while the number of protests may be growing gradually ceases grip on power doesn't seem to be loosening. well it's been a decade of political upheaval in egypt in july 2013 president mohammed morsi was overthrown in a military coup led by general abdel fattah el-sisi who went on to become president says he has suppressed dissent ever since including banning so-called unauthorized protests his government has been accused of wide ranging human rights abuses journalists have been arrested including those working for this network in april last year sisi oversaw a constitutional amendments that could allow him to stay in power until 2030 in september last year a protest similar to the one seen in the last week took place after accusations of corruption let me tell you ghanem his middle east analyst joins us on skype from here in doha so what's your sense of this is latest bouts of protest how much momentum is gathering could this build. well let me start by saying it's very very difficult to make predictions in terms of the daily developments on the ground but it's more easy relatively easy to preview what's coming up in the long term. i believe that as long as they be the army in egypt to doesn't believe than the fact that that armies may need to god borders and to preserve democracy is not a practice that there's always going to be a tussle the protests and instability in egypt so that we can preview and we can easily predict. how hard is it now in egypt for protests to be orchestrated an organized through social media and what risks do people take by taking part. again over the last 7 or 8 years we have seen an unprecedented brutal repression by the military jeep in egypt against the demands of the public for democracy so we can only expect that we team to follow the thing past because simply don't give up any other paths they don't know any other past than repression unfortunately you have been successful so far because of the simple fact that the west has been condoling. the repression the brutal repression that the regime in egypt has been exercising. and also not only condoning but also will be supportive to the regime in egypt both politically and financially and also by providing weapons used against the public. as we head into miles reports sisi supporters particularly those who control egypt's media who claim that these protests were marginal and large mean significant. let me correct something i mean the the military between egypt doesn't control the media anymore i mean the old to me you can be on it literally i mean when we know that the general intelligence and the military intelligence and the state security apparatus and the media i mean most of the media outlets in egypt we can we can imagine and we can understand why the media in egypt in general are ignoring and looking the other way when it comes to the practice in those on the streets hey i got in we do appreciate our expenses on this thanks very much to me thank you thank you. well plenty more still ahead on newsnight including sudan's economic crisis leaders meet to figure out a solution. a we have 24 hours more to touting. how. treatment in uganda is helping save the white rhino from each to each. we've got support coming up and i'm also here from the defending french open champion who's sounding strangely unhappy ahead of this year's event. so no vote counting is underway in a malaysian state election that could have significant consequences for the coalition government in the election is the 1st since prime minister get in yes and took power in a political coup in february poll result that strengthen his position more pressure on is ministration affirms larry norful. these are not just any local elections in malaysia they're a test for prime minister. who came to just 7 months ago he and his supporters withdrew support for the ben governing coalition in february causing its collapse his party known as and the allies hold a razor thin majority in parliament that it was somehow. can be. and also to measure how people actually want how people actually have. and. and also reflect the support of. weaving he faces pressure from his allies to hold snap elections to secure a strong mandate the results from sabah could have an impact on the next general election not do you told 2023 will be called the prime minister is also facing a renewed challenge from opposition brought him on last coalition won the last general election in 2018 but was ousted in february's political coup this week he announced that he now commands the majority in parliament and would be asking the king to appoint him as prime minister the challenge by anwar has exposed how fragile. support for the prime minister even within his coalition the president of the united malays national organization or the biggest party in the governing coalition says some of their politicians have defected to anwar side. analysts say the prime minister needs a victory in sabah too in show support for his coalition doesn't slip away. from voters here the power struggle at the national level mirrors what's happening in sabah one of the few states by the opposition the snap election here was triggered after several state politicians switched sides i would love to see them complete at least the 5 years in order to give a chance. whether or not you know they will keep their promise you know do a better job. a return to power for the party which supports on one's national opposition could provide momentum to his challenge and leave the prime minister in an even shakier position than before. his florence life now from the start. and affirms this is a big test for moving to. a referendum not less. it is and it is a very competitive election there are nearly $400.00 and more than $450.00 candidates for about 70 feet now and it's also the results have started trickling in they're also being very keenly watched by political observers because it will tell us more a lot more about where support law is and where voter sentiment it's now to delve a little bit deeper into that we have with us dr bridget welch ornary research associate at the university of nottingham malaysia asia research institute dr brigid welsh thank you for speaking us to us today now what does it mean for prime minister and we didn't yes since administration if his sight does not deliver a victory at the polls today is he thinking if it can lead weakened this is his 1st major test as an election and if he fails he'll be on borrowed time his leadership is already getting challenge from within and and i think that he is actually going to face a real struggle to maintain his position as prime minister the only let silver lining for him is his party may survive and that made me how allow him to continue it and his party and politics but i think in as prime minister he's already on borrowed time and i think a loss will actually make it much worse for him and what about for the country as a whole what does this election tell us about the state of politics in malaysia well malaysia is grappling with coalition politics lots of defections lots of instability this is something that they've not had in a long in their history and this is they've had $33.00 prime ministers in 3 years and so as this election in a sense also reflects that it was called because of political instability and try attempts to try to take down the state government if the current state government that was in power before she wins in his wara some plus coalition this is seen by many as an embrace of who are foreign politics more inclusionary politics but at the same time we're going to still going to see a lot of the wrangling among alliances so people are just going to. these new realities a very challenging time of coalition making in coalition breaking thank you dr brigitte was dr brigitte welch honorary research associate at the university of north malaysia ajor research institute speaking to us about the state of politics in malaysia where there is a state election and the state of the results have started trickling in but they're still too close to call yet be very interesting to see what happens there for and so appreciate from slavery. now donald trump says he'll name his pick to be the new u.s. supreme court justice on saturday afternoon u.s. media reports say that it's unlikely to be any kevin barrett so chicago a judge considered a strict conservative shield fields for left vacant by ruth bader ginsburg who died last week. reports on the tributes on capitol hill ready. a military guard escorted ruth bader ginsburg's casket up the steps of the u.s. capitol honoring a woman who helped transform life for millions of americans it is with profound sorrow and deep sympathy to the ginsburg family that i have the high honor to welcome justice ruth bader ginsburg to lie in state the late supreme court justice was a champion for equal rights for men and women born to a world vastly different from the america today in the 1950 s. despite her brilliant mind and dogged work ethic she was demoted because of her gender and questioned for taking a man's spot in law school her tenacity and painstakingly thorough legal record eventually caught the eye of president bill clinton who nominated her to the supreme court ginsburg sat on the high bench for 27 years her diminutive size be lying her juggernaut status as a feminist icon for the left and voice for social justice through her scathing dissents. lying atopic had a bill for president abraham lincoln ginsburg broke yet a final barrier becoming the 1st woman and 1st jewish person to be afforded the honor of lying in state at the u.s. capitol. as a lawyer she wanted quality for women and men not in one swift victory but brick by brick case by case through meticulous careful lawyer. she changed the course of american law. democratic presidential candidate and former vice president joe biden was among those who pay their respects at the end of a long struggle with cancer ginsburg dying wish was to have a new president named her replacement to the supreme court polls show a majority of americans feel the same but president donald trump plans to announce his nominee to fill ginsburg's vacancy saturday trump will nominate a conservative judge and senate republicans have the numbers to push through confirmation possibly before the november 3rd election that would give trump a significant victory to tout to his base the creation of an ironclad conservative majority in the supreme court. whoever replaces ginsburg could wield key votes for upcoming cases on health care and abortion rights and as the president has acknowledged could even help resolve any recall challenge to the election results those powder keg circumstances fewer than 40 days before voters choose their president all but guaranteed contentious congressional hearings ahead but for now a last quiet moment beneath the u.s. flag at half mast in honor of a woman who leaves the country more equal for individuals and more divided in politics. castro al-jazeera washington. sudan's leaders a meeting to figure out a way to solve the economic crisis so they declared an economic state of emergency earlier this month visiting flooding in the coronavirus epidemic of compounded the problems caused by years of u.s. sanctions imposed on the former regime let's pay to have a morgan who's at the meeting in khartoum and him there are no international partners at this conference this is purely a national affair so what are they hoping to get out of it. well 1st of all let's take a look at the backdrop against which this national conference is happening despite having vast arable land and mineral resources the country is still facing a severe shortage in foreign currency it's still facing difficulties producing weak which is needed for bread and for basic meals that sudanese have here and it's still facing shortage of fuel commodities so this is the backdrop against which the economy conference is happening the country's also going through a state of emergency that was announced by the government about 2 weeks ago after flood devastated many states in that country now what the government is trying to achieve is that it's trying to bring together the various sides in this transitional period to try to unify their position on how to get this country out of the current economic status that it is and the sudanese pound itself has lost more than 40 percent of its value over the past 2 weeks and this is just the past 2 weeks alone over the past year the value has been going to continue to face a downward spiral against the dollar and the government is saying that it needs to take hard stance and hard steps that need to take hard steps to try to reform the economy including lifting fuel commodities and finding ways to bring in more hard currency now these are policies that not everybody in the government agree on before the forces of freedom and change coalition which has brought the transitional government to power has said that its prescriptions as it didn't scrap the prescriptions that the current transitional government is moving on is not suitable for people on the ground more than 60 percent already live below the poverty line so what this conference is trying to do is that it's trying to bring the various sides the neighborhood coming resistance committees the forces of freedom and change coalition of the political parties executive branch and the sovereignty council so that they can all try to form a unified stance about they can come together and form a binding will this is a binding resolution so that they can try to get the country out of its economic crisis right where easing of international sanctions would help. but really going to try and get them removed. now there have been talks about lifting sudan of the u.s. list of states sponsoring terrorism the talks have been happening for a few months now in fact since the transitional government came to power last august they say that one of their 1st ball goals is to lift the country off that list but that needs a lot of steps to be taken one of them being the sudan paying compensation for victims of terror attacks in tanzania and kenya in 1989 now the government has said that it's already secured that money and that it isn't talks with the u.s. government to be lifted off that list but there are also talks of victims of the 911 attacks they say that sudan should not be left out of the most because they played a role in the 911 attacks in new york and the state that the conference should that the congress should not move forward and of sudan of that list now sudan says that it has nothing to do with that and it is in desperate need of us looking at all that list so that they can try to attract foreign investment and get through leaves the country is hugely in debt but this is also tied apparently to house. or house moved down normalize its ties with israel u.s. secretary of state my campaign was in country last month to push forward for a normalization of ties between sudan and israel and the government has said that it does not have the mandate for that and that the 2 issues should be separate that lifting it of the states of sponsoring terrorism list and its normalizing its ties with israel should be 2 separate things there were talks in the u.a.e. last week over the same issues tying them together again the government has said that it is it is rejecting having the 2 issues brought together they say that they want concrete promises from the u.s. and from the u.n. from israel before their normal but it does acknowledge that it seriously needs to look into its external relations so that it can reform its economy ok important things in focus there and called morgan thank you very much the time when the no off to europe i think 4 seasons on one continent. there's that idea about. i think across no more sunshine yes let me show me a satellite as i say not a great deal of clear skies said there is some careless skies tools eastern and the mediterranean so turkey people have been out about in the south coast enjoying a source of paragliding the winds have been quite strong as well and then look at this of course we've got snow you have had the last few days this is up into australia and innsbrook of course some very heavy snow there and all of this is going on we've also got some very strong storms these storms really impacting northern areas of spain the winds have been strong again it was the u.k. for the last couple of days the look at these wind gusts here a pincer corsica 158 kilometers an hour and then per se 140 kilometers an hour so some very strong winds continuing through much of the central and west imad all coming through this system has very strong rain pushing across into areas of france and also across into much of germany but really the heaviest rain for the next couple days is going to be across the balkans and again the central mediterranean you can really see this storm system whining itself up some very strong winds and to say that will bring some heavy amounts of rain that touches also worth noting here because it is a lot cooler than it should be this time of year we've got 10 matches. in rome anywhere between about $7.10 degrees below the average so as to say feeling pretty cold the rain is really not going to move for the next couple of days maybe $120.00 millimeters across areas of the balkans and look at this new lots of new snow again lining the alps maybe as much as 30 centimeters nic. very much now still ahead here on al-jazeera families of factory workers prosecuted during brazil's dictatorship celebrated like the tree good folks like them. and continue at the beijing also show the 1st event of its kind to take place during the pandemic and coming up next i'll tell you why global comic is so reliant on the chinese market. and it's called a perfect season. the athlete who's now targeting his 1st ever going to pick title . player. for centuries egypt has sought to command power over the miles is a dollar a week old home in any of the normal place and countries and they don't need the oil they get there will said from nature boss upstream this dominance is being challenged by countries who want to agree to share i know some people in egypt on the question that yes this circumstances have changed in a change quarter of a struggle over the mild on al-jazeera. when the news breaks and the racism protests continue in a number of cities across the united states when people need to be heard in this trial for their real line nearly 500 homes were destroyed and about 80 percent of this land that al-jazeera has teams on the ground people are just talking about wind and solar as if that's going to solve the problem if want to bring you more on wood when in documentaries and lightning. on a sunday online. but again you're watching al-jazeera our mind of our top stories this hour and lebanon's prime minister designate mustafa deep has quit saying he hasn't been able to form a government this comes less than a month after he was named prime minister the key question now is who will replace him and who will want to replace him. thousands of people across egypt have defied a ban on protests and demonstrating against governments that are angry at deteriorating living conditions and more president topple fattah el-sisi to resign . vote counting is under way in a malaysian state election that could have to make consequences for the coalition government calling for the pollen is the 1st since prime minister we had in since the pandemic began manufacturers see the exhibition in beijing as a glimmer of hope for an industry suffering multibillion dollar losses and the trade war tensions between the u.s. and china don't help business either our reporter katrina you as more. this event was supposed to take place in april so it has been for spode 2 by a few months and in 28 when this last place there were almost a 1000000 people attending now you still behind me there are still quite a few crowds but there are much fewer than previously as fewer exhibit and fewer attendees everyone who's coming here as well as had to wear a mosque in order to enter the venue and many international exhibitors couldn't come basically because china's borders are still very much tightly controlled and those who did had to complete 2 weeks of quarantine before hand but it really under schools the government's term a nation to put this event on show because of how important it is the chinese government is looking to the auto industry here in china to help spur the sluggish economy the china also industry is worth about $1.00 trillion dollars and employs about 33000000 people nationwide and during the height of the pandemic in february casals in china plunged by almost 80 percent and over the last few months they've slower they've gotten back and rebounded to almost preplanned levels and it's also very important for global carmakers elsewhere in the world in europe and in the u.s. consulate are still extremely weak and several car brands about to close factories and fire stuff that many see the chinese market as a source of her b.m.w. the c.e.o. in china here said that this this show was indeed a source of hope for many international carmakers and many of unveiled new vehicles especially electric vehicles here and about 800 vehicles and will be on display over the next 10 days here in beijing. south korea is government is demanding the north further investigate the killing of a government official seat streets for a 3rd night activists say they will continue to demonstrate until all the officers involved in taylor's death all fired or someone is charged she has returned he has the latest on the crisis from. it's another night of the protests on the streets of louisville since the grand jury decided not to indict any police officer the death of briana taylor it's another night of curfew too but there's a loophole this unitarian church downtown in louisville has declared itself a sanctuary and it is welcoming the protesters to come in during the curfew those who are not welcome other police officers on the national guard they're not allowed in here so therefore despite the curfew this place is buzzing and they have as you might have heard food toilets water a legal help jail support they say and transport shuttles for people who want to go home even despite the curfew because if they do step out of here it's very likely that the police could arrest them in the meantime as far as the case of brianna taylor is concerned there are still questions about how the grand jury came to the decision under suspicion is amongst his family and her lawyer is that the attorney general didn't give all the information to the grand jury specifically he didn't tell the grand jury that although one witness said they heard the police announce themselves before they barged their way into brown otitis home 11 other witnesses say they didn't hear the police announce themselves so now they want the transcripts that's the main fight now get the transcripts of the grand jury find out what the attorney general actually said and see whether justice was really done . el salvador's president is vowing to publish documents relating to a massacre by soldiers 39 years ago and i've been places most of the documents have been destroyed since the u.s. backed soldiers killed nearly a 1000 people in 1901 it took 31 years for el salvador's government to acknowledge its role in the massacre and last of all we had to go to the government asked for a search and this is what we found all of the documents we recovered were from the joint staff of the armed forces where we assume they took part in or had something to do with the massacre this will be officially handed over to the judge and will also be handed over to the attorney general's office. the families of factory workers persecuted
