Tackles the big issues this is shaping United States its people its economy and the way it deals with the rest of the world the bottom line only on aljazeera. 100 days of protests and counting rallies against Police Brutality and racism in the u. S. Show little sign of ending supporters and opponents of the demonstrations are hardening restaurants so can anything bridge the divide like this is in silence till. I. Hello welcome to the program im kevin l. Just over 3 months ago black american george floyd suffocated his offices in minneapolis tried to arrest him his death triggered protests across the u. S. Against Police Brutality and racism the rallies have been largely peaceful but cities such as portland have become flashpoints for unrest after President Donald Trump sent in federal agents and accused protesters of what he called domestic terrorism more examples of heavy handed arrests have since emerged on social media as rob reynolds reports the issue is creating more division in the country less than 2 months out from the president ial election. Well i stand back state was speaking from a hospital bed jacob blake described his constant agony 24 hours every 24 hours as pain is not. Hers to breathe hers. Is the move from side to side hers eat. Blake was shot in the back by a can osha wisconsin policeman in august hes had numerous surgeries and is paralyzed the States Department of justice is investigating the shooting i just want to say much to our young and even. Me its a lot more life to live. In rochester new york protesters clashed with heavily armed police. Police used chemical irritants against protesters who had launched fireworks out there. Some protesters formed a human chain and there were several arrests the demonstrators were demanding justice for daniel prude who died in march after police restrained him held him on the pavement and put a mash hood over his head prudes death was ruled a homicide. The new York Attorney general announced she would empanel a grand jury as part of what she termed an exhaustive investigation into prudes death. 7 Rochester Police officers involved in the killing have been suspended. In louisville kentucky black lives matter demonstrators continue their protests over the death of Briana Taylor shot by police in her home in march the protesters gathered outside a racetrack where the christie just Kentucky Derby horse race was run armed counter protesters call. Wing themselves pro police patriots confronted them black lives matter marchers there was arguing and yelling but no violence as the Patriot Group eventually withdrew and in Portland Oregon and more protests over Police Misconduct and systemic racism continue now for the 100th consecutive night cortlandt has come to symbolize the most extensive nationwide protests the u. S. Has seen in decades over Racial Injustice as the Summer Season draws to its close the u. S. Faces a long hot Holiday Weekend of protest rob reynolds aljazeera. Well lets now bring and our guest the last talk about washington d. C. We have Maurice Jackson an associate professor of africanAmerican History at Georgetown University and poland seneca case and he is one of the protest is and has been among the demonstrations for the last 100 days also in washington d. C. There pramod a political strategist and consultant derrick is a former Regional Press secretary for the Democratic National committee a warm welcome to all of you senator id like to start with you 100 Straight Days or nights of protest in portland how have things changed or evolved in that time. Has been adjusted its been our its been a roller coaster. At times as mr. There is some of this were still its like its. Going back a 100 years so. Its very interesting exhaust and wealth mentally and physically. Its definitely a fight here what do you think it is about portland that is same this this sustained pressure this memento of the reading that the state of oregon is 87 percent white and only 2 percent black. Essentially and so are saying. Essentially this is hard to even talk about because. That isnt real to see how this is 2nd foreman and for london for them. It is as a large a large white population. Where it was known as a racist state so to see this group go you know in this type of manners that definitely my employment do you know some people have talked about the gentrification of protests having majority white demonstrators detracting from the cause whats your take. I dont take it from the cause i would say that if they were if there were more. Symptoms that its not portland. At that its not that many blacks own to say its taken over i dont i dont see that i see them thats the bond down to you know the black leaders and actually giving them the voices and they fight so the voices can be amplified so i do see that on a nightly basis not like are they what they walk into protests and and demand attention are speaking areas and its just not that many black people getting important stand up youve got to talk a little himself you know you mentioned that that the history that the States History maryse i want to bring u. N. Talk to us a little bit about that the history of racism in in oregon and how that might be impacting what were seeing in portland today. Thank you kim and fraser my brother in oregon i can say are these events having a weight on him and i just see a new day is coming just hang in it brother you know im not a spirit on oregon but i do know a little bit about history and if west of gentrification it happens all over and i know are going to hit it important it was a black you nancy and have been gentrified because of the housing prices of thats happening all of the nation if you saw the demonstration in washington d. C. You saw in some case you so are as many ways as you did blacks because you didnt have occasion but i think hes actually right one does not. Solve the problem by by bringing on those who demonstrate you praise those young whites who come out who have the courage to come out because of gentrification it is a National Problem which yet to be dealt with on a National Level this is a this is the problem people often see these demonstrations is just a matter of something a black and white but there are much deeper. If we look at today the whole question of addictions where now theyre starting to see more people on the question of coping 19 was disappointment it effects the africanamerican people the question of the digital back of the Incoming Party sort of questions effecting blacks in important black so minority in the country they will be a majority in most places except in big cities so i think just do a compare on that and i think the media is done in somewhat of a disparate job. Bringing too much emphasis on the underweight women who protested of course it is true the media has often paid more attention to them than a have to other black women other places black women over in other places but the people who protest should be nothing but praise they are standing up with their Black Brothers and sisters speaking of the of the narrative portrayed by the media derek this is a question for you the latest doctor thats come out this is actually found that the vast majority of demonstrations 903 percent with peaceful we know serious harm to people or to property but thats always the narrative we share is that how is that impacting the conversation and the divide. You know 1st jim thank you so much for having me on and thank you. To those perilous sort of join today look i have to say that one in terms of this narrative around those that are fighting against systemic issues of racism. Issues of social justice youre right 90 percent of them have been peaceful and whats happening is that we are in the midst of probably one of the most contentious and not the most contentious election weve seen in our lifetime and on one side you have President Trump who is trying to say that hes the law and order president and on the other side you have President Biden who say that we have to appeal to our better angels that we cannot become a nation divided if you will and war with itself and so whats happening is that trust strategy is really about how do i try to portray myself as a law and order candidate but even the data shows that in wisconsin even right now. Joe biden actually has a lead over trump when it comes to that question and weve seen that in study after study poll after poll and its its i think ultimately going to come down to a place where its either hope over fear and i think on one side theyre hoping that people are free thats why youre hearing this conversation around the suburbs in people should be afraid of the suburbs of their suburb suburban life being disturbed by you know the others if you will and thats what were thats happening in portland. And the demonstrations that weve seen over the last few months are so important because its about raising awareness of the systemic issues that have plagued our country since its founding. The senate to which same images of the protested protests is confronted by police by federal agents but also running battles between opposing demonstrators white militias black militias from your experience who is it thats really out there on the streets and where do you think this protest movement going on the 10. Yes a battle over gender is on many r. C. Not political agenda you got religious agenda you have all our roots you it just you have a black lives matter you have. Supposed misses from both sides so this is about awards and right now. Which is seen a lot on c. B. S. About oprah thats a nice and old. People thats got rights are fighting against people with rights so that split makes this that much more special because theyre fighting fire with fire. Is this is i mean if you havent been hit to experience it is hard even like i said before its hard to fathom. I guess it is this is just that is just a crazy when you know they arent so you cannot do you get the feeling america is becoming more divided or do you get the feeling people are coming together behind you know fighting racial inequality and fighting for Racial Justice whats your feeling. One thing i think like a lot of them out of there are the slowest suckers of the bar. So i do see that theres a. C mob you might mean is that you would expect to see the churches out there standing and you dont. So theyre taken there on. The black why it matters is basically taking their own side because they feel like the legend is being lost or the narrative is being hijacked that you know. So you is definitely the bards there are many of ours that large now that youve got all kinds of different. Agendas out there are going to meet that on brothers on little black lives on them so yes it is. Mari so what can we learn from history do you think from the Civil Rights Movement from the protests of of the mid 20th century to ensure that this moment is not lost and that real change is implemented what lessons should we learn. Well i think the lessons are many but let me say this. You know when the president a sitting president goes to a place like an ocean and praises a white man for taking a gun walking into a crowd and shooting people i have seen many things but i didnt see George Wallace do that so we have to be very clear about 2 directions one which direction of the sitting president is trying to take the country and one i think which another i will say this what not but you know gandhi said something very very and he said there go my people i must cast them and when joe biden says the other day that i will go down this election when to lose i will go down fighting against race and fighting with my Black Brothers as if that is a historic statement and i think this is the lesson we will have to take the well that im a democrat or republican not it doesnt make a difference when this man say is morally since that this is the key issue of our time when there is new sin then your presence there sit there so we go from there i tend to think that. It is a time to bring together people on a all fronts i think that at least i hope that this a president. Will get a message that the nation will not accept this and if people start coming together now out of this youve seen great coalitions developing of the young black and white youth ive never seen as many wait you brooke just think anything i was around vietnam war you had many but they didnt join with blacks so you have these instances i think that when if if the senate and the Congress Changes which i suspect it might there will be a day to now he is the other thing. And have been very important in most cases in many cases since Separation Movement when we had these race disturbances the federal authorities were code in to help quell them and that was what happened under Obama Administration did love the federal law because they loved. They dont look dont dont dont dont work space didnt dont do in this case weve gone backwards where the federal government is not used to civil rights authorities and so now i think its a chance to this election if it goes i would hope it is to change all that for the federal government to impose when you have a president this is no longer where we allow the government to have sensitivity training in race trainings in gender trainings about the inequalities then we know were taking a big step backwards i think the lessons of that. And as the young man said he sometimes you have to be go back and forward the quest news to keep Going Forward and i think were going to move in that direction there and i can see you nodding away at what were going to add yeah i mean look i i concur with everything that dr jack jackson has said what i would also say though is like these issues were created by donald trump hes exacerbated and through our history here in the United States weve had these moments in which we have needed to and we should have actually moved forward and backwards so when you know in this moment in time right now we dont have that moral leadership nationally when we have to application of the federal government when we need them the most its you know due to a number of reasons one incompetence for sure to apathy but 3 i think is really her this particular president and in particular in this time he wants to stop those the visions and book has the cars made since the 1960 s. Absolutely are we are a better country today than we were you know 20 years ago 30 years ago 40 years ago without a doubt but is there a lot of work to be done. Absolutely and right now we dont have them on leadership we dont have the direction we need to be heading in and you know november is going to be absolute telling moment far country but i will also say that again i coming back to this whole thing right dr jackson kind of talked about it like this is hope that we will change direction come november is not guarantee and there are forces that are doing their damnedest to to make sure that some stays in the white house ok you mentioned there we talked there about donald trump didnt it didnt start this you know this is systemic this is a very you know root of all of them of American Society around the world in fact. To that end when federal agents were sent into portland how did that change the dynamic its changed it because it. It became our it became a curiosity thing the or the services of foreign that. That that stood in a bucket list you know that something never welker and was in their safe place if they came a curiosity is just so massive that people showed up just to see exactly what it was about so their presence. And then the way they respond it sort of just loved by assistance was very detrimental in the way this movement kick you know our guest and made it turn for the better. Because theyre you know it really exposed everything thats you guys are talking about now it expose it and it became a not so problem going to put it it was this this flight was a plane of people with nothing to lose its initially. It quickly became a fright of people with lots that was. And thats what thats what happened when they came in in the air it was tested with the gas in them i mean it was a c. If you see anything on the nose. I was part of the Justice Center which is actually i mean its people who know you know in the building like its people has not been charged yet people is in jail is still in the building they were actually stuck on the gas and couldnt even caught the help you know so it was it says it everything i mean for us when the federal agents came in and all that i mean it was get through sometimes 3 times a day. And i just i want to come back to this idea of the sorry to interrupt i want to come back to the running out of time the idea usc sort of to touch tone at the narrative that donald trump is putting forward about these protests. Hes actually been described as as is you know these are the f. It said love the last ditch efforts of a desperate man whos trailing in the polls and whose Coronavirus Response has come under criticism whats your take do you agree with that. I do i mean again weve seen various leadership from donald trump related to coal that weve seen it related to the unrest over seeing in the streets and you know he has made no bones about it that hes going to do everything that he can to get reelected and so thats what were fighting it gets right were fighting against someone who can not hes incapable of being able to speak to our better angels hes incapable of calling us
