Peaceful protesters dispersed in order for a president the pressure from the doorstep of the peoples house the white house using tear gas and flash grenades during this stage photo along a photo on one of the most Historic Churches in the country or at least in washington d. C. We can be forgiven for believing the president is more interested in power then in friendship. Were just serving the passion that was based on the needs of the people is clear and i was saying a visit to a catholic shrine on tuesday has also drawn criticism trump and the 1st lady visited a shrine in the capital on the late Roman Catholic Pope John Paul the 2nd catholic archbishop of washington denounced the move as baffling and reprehensible and condemned what he called the misuse of places of worship. Well protesters are back at the white house hundreds of people are there in peaceful demonstration on the curfew is now in effect at least 40 cities of nighttime restrictions imposed theyve been thousands of arrests as protesters defy the orders will be live with our correspondent there in washington shortly but 1st the state of minnesota has filed a civil rights charge against the Minneapolis Police over the death of george floyd the governor says it will mean an investigation into years of police procedures. I think the thing im hearing from the protesters is you know were not watching and we dont care what you say we care what you do so today as a step towards that deconstruction of stomach gray that says im the Minnesota Department of human rights is filing a commissioners charge of discrimination to launch a civil rights investigation into the Minneapolis Police department the investigation will review in p. D. F. Policies procedures and practices over the last 10 years to determine if the department is utilized systemically screamin toward practices towards people of color or john hendren joins us live now from minneapolis where this all began 8 days ago john so lets talk 1st about that george floyd Family Press Conference it was tearful it was poignant what more to the family have to say. It was moving to 2 main points if we heard roxy washington you say was that her daughter would be without a father for the rest of her life and that she wanted justice for george floyd a loser that you points weve heard over and over from members of his family seeking to humanize him and to let people know this was a real person who police it was in chile snuff the light out of life out of in her own view but here at the memorial for george floyd let me just show you a little bit there and there are thousands of people there are fewer now because we had a pretty heavy rain a little while ago but you can see its kind of a festive atmosphere even if its a bit somber and its summer of course because right here is where george floyd died right here on the road and you can see the memorial of flowers for him and the latest addition to this is this giant nero of george few toys and im going to introduce you to someone who organized this event. So this is tony clark and bruce harmon. Tell me just why did you put this event together because our allies say to me is no the black lies and lies about it and you cant do a Community Without unity it out photo the defining. So if you need he has 7 crazy days enough for a life. Time isnt open up to to many want to so in love you know full needy joy. And a a side. Bar we need to put him back in order you know i mean its all we had to organize a community but you know different areas some people cant get up and yet we try again and werent when you saw other you had to serve justice with each other in that we had some of what you saw and then you can see what weve done here that we have all different shapes and colors that are out here everybodys coming together to support each other and thats what a Real Community would do and thats what we need to start doing on an every day basis continuing from where age of on a journey tell me about this mural behind us what what how did this come about. Because i right know that they felt like casey is it is in the dark but as you saw they are going to come up with is going to come in as just a light on a mother so as not as this right here. On it they it we dont not keep on to see what we do and that theres a mirror well get to your faith and i think thats really symbolic the light coming out of his you days debby i mean if you want to make to see the signs and let me ask you when i 1st met you on friday night you were limping why was that because i saw it on the arms and we protect asserted National Guard they got the protocol to move out the way. I could run saw im with everybody back they fired a shot me in my leg with rubber bullets so this police shot in the in the leg while you were trying to protect the National Guard from the crowd yeah. I mean i just felt like a. Number on a kill peace and peace is some day you know we stand together and all you want to do is you serve justice and no matter what a father they thought i did each force. Let me ask you something john. How long are people going to stay out here well i know yesterday we stayed out here until past curfew and and we stayed out here until the sun came up so im hoping everybody is ready to do the same thing today because we have something that we need to show and grow and we have a right to assembly and we are mourning for our brother and we are going to be here and stand with him. And were not going to we know hes going to i got so if i mean can you speak just to get up is going to go like this every single day and so just as the search because they want to go inside our new movement george can go inside. But then it doesnt stop there we need to keep Going Forward even after justice is there because we just got justice for george at that point what about the rest of america we need to keep moving forward so this doesnt happen again and how many how many days are you all going to be out here what youre going to take for this to and for everyone to say ok we achieved our goal as long as it takes honestly im ready to stand by my brothers and sisters across the world weve been out here every day really. Every day this going to be like this every single day so i think they need to get used to it because we need to show america when you saw other countries. History is repeating in no possible way we did not want homes dont want to go because at the end days this is our unity and well Tony Clark Javan Harmon thank you both for and im going to give you one of us thank you. For talking to us and for letting us know whats going on here and again every day at this spot its been peaceful all day all the time the police have come in here with tear gas and rubber bullets and there has been violence and looting and fires in other parts of the city but youll notice none of these buildings have been looted here it is always been peaceful there john before you go just just a final thought i mean minneapolis is one of the so. It is under curfew youve been out and about talking to people youve been able to send paul the the state capital what i mean how are people dealing with this what are they telling you. You know. Well youre right in st paul there were thousands of people standing in front of the capitol listening to speakers as National Guard armored personnel carriers were standing at the foot of the capitol of the state of minnesota and what we heard from people is really what you just heard from these 2 gentlemen right now that theyre going to stay out here and tell their charges against the 4 officers involved but be until theres stops being incidents of young africanamerican men being killed by police and exactly when theyll be satisfied that enough progress has been made for that to happen thats going to be determined by the people in the street staring john hendren live for us there in minneapolis john many thanks for that well there were some extraordinary scenes in washington d. C. On monday in our correspondent Shihab Rattansi joins us live from there now so you were there last night caught up in all the drama of the flash bangs of the tear gas and the smoke grenades making way for president trying to tell us where you are now and whats happening. Were about. 6 blocks up from the white house what happened surely you know. A number of groups just splintered off into smaller groups some we were told the Lincoln Memorial would go over that no sign of any protest. Amazing pictures which im sure have gone viral already of the Lincoln Memorial just flooded with military personnel on the steps in front of Abraham Lincoln talking about emancipation but then we were turned back into we found a group who had spent it off. The ring at a masonic temple here on the steps of a masonic temple. Sort of. Blocks from the white house they were protesting that. The Bicycle Police. They were them. That they might be subjected to so simply the group just started walking again so were heading back to the white house now followed by about 20 Bicycle Police at least. All around us and then at least before behind us we had sort of a a convoy of police cars that were behind us they seem to disappeared for the moment but the point is theyre over there other. I mean the point is that keeping the police guessing all day. Even from this group weve seen a couple of groups. Side streets. But you know this is just like 10 people it could be people going home but the point is theoretically theres a curfew we should say that its interesting as we were driving around town the police didnt seem to be enforcing that we could see you know. People walking their dogs they would be told to go home they didnt seem to be actually telling everyone to go home however this group of protesters gathered at the. School for justice after the death of mr floyd. So were actually heading back to the white house now actually to talk to someone. Whats going on here under the surface is interesting is kind of the movement right here this is a movement this is a change for america that thing is the American People not only just the black community but americans are tired of everything thats gone on the end just as is going on in our country the Police Brutality and everything so we need to make a change we are here to tell president charles that we want a change and we need to have reform on the criminal justice reform. He doesnt think is listening. Now i really dont thats the sad thing about it is it just about him though i mean isnt it about this predates donald trump doesnt it lets face it this is about a society thats been like this one time oh of course weve dealt with racism here in this country for a long time this is the beginning but the only thing about it is that we dont have any. What you call it any day direction from the federal government and this is going on not only with just this with george floyd well also with the corona virus so we need in a short life we dont even have a leader does the right there when it comes to pandemics or domestic issues that is going on in this country and has been going on in this country for a long time so with the death of george szell it is about a couple of 2 to to address you know a broken society in general that its not just about race and political clout is because hes just the one that was just seen on video he was in the was in spokane he was in the ones that was out there that didnt get seen by the video or camera or phone or anything so that thing is they. Are tired of whats going on tired of the lies of the federal government and the state local governments are doing and we need to make a change when it comes to our coming to Justice System which is a big issue in our country thank you thank you so much thank you very much where having about 30 you could probably just about i dont know where the crowd are going to focus this is where i get a lecture from a photographer you dont understand lenses but i dont know if you can just about see the white house towards the end of the street but its way way down you know about 6 blocks id say right so were having about to the white house now we understand there are other groups heading through chinatown on the way to the capitol capitol hill and that certainly was it was a bit of a flashpoint yesterday but well carry on following these protests. Have a catch up with him another half an hour or so but for the time being stay safe well talk to them all right lets head out to the west coast a car for us just come into effect in los angeles which has seen some unrest and looting over the past days robin is live for us that now rob sort of tell us where you are whats happening around you things are looking fairly quiet there behind you. Well there in the curfew went into a fact about a quarter of an hour ago and the people who were barging in protesting along hollywood boulevard near where i am know have largely left the area. Line of Police Vehicles going. Through dont know exactly what that is all about but theyre heading in. That direction of hollywood there have been throughout the day large peaceful protests there were thousands of people marching here along hollywood boulevard more recently there have been thousands of people gathering at they home residents of the Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to make their thoughts. During their presence to bear on on him some people have not been complimentary of his performance during this series of of of nights of civil unrest overall there have been close to 3000 people placed under arrest many for curfew violation misdemeanors over the past 3 or 4 days here in the greater Southern California area and again curfew is in effect for 10000000 people in Los Angeles County curfew or not there are some people here that we want to talk to and one of them is gary gary if you would step over here please gary a native angeleno and youve been out here all day and i see your sign toast show us your signs and sciences cops where are you at what what what whats the message there well i keep hearing through either the media or friends or people that there are still good cops out there like theyre not then you know its just a couple about options yet youre not going to get a good apple from a bad bunch i mean if we truly do have good cops we need in the stand up we need then the come out and say right were not were not for this we need them to walk out we need them to do Something Different than what they have been doing for the last half century of our hundreds of years that black people brown people have gone through. What is your take on the Media Coverage to the as you absorb it over the past several days you think its been fair to be honest no i feel that the Media Coverage has been more skewed to link the protestors with the looters and there are 2 dozen different sects of people there are those of us who are peacefully protesting chanting not antagonizing the cops at all and then there are the people who are only the opportunistic scum that are muddying the message that were trying to get across so so what do you think about those people and and how how are they affecting the message and the movement well i feel that they are affect in the way where its just making theres more dissonance as opposed to the message getting across like we need them to stop doing what theyre doing is had they have started in iraq now and we need them to stop doing what theyre doing we need them to step back and either be a part of this or just stay at home stay at home so have people been has been in order to it and amount of attention being paid in the media to those people who are breaking into shoe stores and so forth i feel i feel that very much yes and the problem is i feel the need to needs to be more on us more with us we we need accountability from the media the cops everyone in our government we there just need to be accountability and it starts with differentiating the different sets of people that are out there. Gary thank you very much for speaking with richie you too thanks a lot. All right so again some some good 1st for instructive criticism of Media Coverage of the
