Maker becomes the latest to slash jobs after demand comes to a screeching halt to join the pandemic. A policeman has been charged with murder and the National Guard are on the streets of the u. S. City of minneapolis but across the country i know over the death of george floyd during his arrest on monday shows little sign of easing its just after 6 pm in minneapolis and in less than 2 hours everyone is supposed to be off the streets a curfew has been declared by the citys mayor after 3 nights of protests stores have been looted and burned on thursday night a Police Station where the accused officer worked was set alight. Protests have been taking place in many other cities this was new york just a few hours ago crowds gathering outside the new York Supreme Court building before marching across the Brooklyn Bridge chanting no justice no peace. And the violence in minneapolis prompted a tweet by President Donald Trump suggesting looters would be shot which was later hidden by twitter in the tweets trump called rioters thugs and said when the looting starts the shooting starts to set the message glorified violence and removed it from view although it can still be accessed by clicking on it the looters should not be allowed to drown out the voices of so many Peaceful Protesters they hurt so badly what is happening and its so bad for the state and for their great city so we are working very closely with the Justice Department were working with local Law Enforcement were working with everybody and were speaking with the family and hopefully everything can be fairly taken care of. Ok joining us now whos honest and had us as a journalist in minneapolis alison somewhat of a couple of hours or so away from this few is there any sign that people are going to take notice of it. You know talk to a couple people out here on the street and you can see behind me up and they said that they dont think that the curfew is going to hold thats im not sure what that means because weve got Minnesota State patrol behind me there theres a heavy National Guard presence i saw a tank actually just a right behind me where i just pointed out so i im not sure whats going to happen after 8 pm tonight there are a couple of people that i talked to said that. Theres still too much anger on the street right now weve been seeing of course throughout the day the protests that have been happening on the streets of many hapless but how of people feeling who are not involved in the protests. And welcome the right to the sky didnt they actually you probably cant get you know be able to hear it is a look a decode to decode drummers from this drum group and theyre calling for peace theyre calling for unity they are calling to rebuild this Indigenous Youth organization thats been here for 40 years so they said a prayer for the community here and are asking for healing theyre asking for calm and they said that when all of the police are got away and everybody has cleared out of here they are going to come back and theyre going to need bill to that building wrecked by brick what about the people who live in the city who have not been taking part in the protests but having to live their lives that the violence thats been going on whats the and the mood amongst those people oh well i i live in this neighborhood i live but to block 2 miles away from the Police Station 2 miles away from these businesses and shops this is my community and a lot of the people here that are my can. The members they are telling me that they feel angry they feel upset they feel that they yes they think that what happened to george white is wrong but they also feel like you know they dont want to have the Community Businesses that they rely on that they go to for food are medicine to be. Taken down this is people have said you know its taken a really long time to rebuild this new build lake street because at one point there werent a lot of shops there werent a lot of places and now its been built up by the community and only to have it torn down and looted they just feel a sense of loss and a sense of pain on us and i understand that youve been in the city for many years ago give us an indication if you can of the relationship that people have with the police force in minneapolis. Well ive lived in the city for almost 20 years ive seen numerous arrests protests on numerous riots over on the north side of minneapolis taking place on the freeway which is not too far from here but this feels different the anger that that is out on the streets right now to me feel so much different than from a lot to catskill from germar clark from jesse diamond people. I think that just you know this is just a i think people have felt like you know far too far too much for too long thats what ive been hearing from people on the streets here when youve been talking about in the streets of the city what is the National Guard presence like odd thing trying to be discreet are how are they actually showing up on the streets. You know i talked to a couple of National Guard people today actually early this morning theyve been out since 4 am i mean i think you know theyre just you know theyre present i think their presence is being felt you know theyre guarding some of the businesses. Probably going to be enforcing a curfew some people said to i just heard overheard a couple of people say you know where were they last night where were they last night to protect these businesses has anybody been talking to you allison about the president s tweets with regard to the looters that the violence thats been going on in the streets. You know i havent heard anything ive you know i havent really asked anybody about those tweets i think right now peoples anger Peoples Energy is really focused on they really want the officer to be charged they want to know i mean they really want the other 3 officers to be charged and they want to they want to have i feel like they what ive heard from them is that they want you know that they want some justice they want that one officer to be put in jail and Allison Herrera bringing us the situation from the streets of Minneapolis Office and thanks very much indeed ok so less than 2 hours to the co few starting in minneapolis that allison was telling somebody john hendren reports in a day of dramatic developments it is what protesters across the u. S. Have been demanding the officer who held his knee on George Floyds neck has been arrested for may have Police Officer during a child has been charged by the head of a county Attorneys Office with murder and with manslaughter as minneapolis st still smoldering following a 3rd night of riots the student governor is hoping the news will calm the violence in the streets minneapolis and st paul are on fire the fire still smoldering our streets the ashes are symbolic of decades and generations of a pain. Of anguish and heard much like we failed to hear. George floyd. As he pleaded for his life as the world watched it is my expectation that justice for the officers involved in this will be swift that it will come in a timely manner that it will be fair that is what weve asked for governor tim wants also called the arrest of a black c. N. N. Journalist and his crew early friday by state Police Officers unacceptable i take full responsibility there is absolutely no reason Something Like this should happen calls were made immediately this is a very public apology to that team it should not happen i failed you last night and that in minneapolis riot police stand ready to confront a community that feels its been betrayed National Guard soldiers have also arrived in the city requested by a mayor who is under pressure to bring the violence under control. This was a Police Station in flames on thursday night and anger directed at those who swear to serve and protect escalated not far away more burning shops looting and violence. Protests have spread across the u. S. In denver demonstrators echoed the demand for justice already heard in new york and los angeles anger over the treatment of africanamericans by the police is not new but right now it is very wrong. In louisville in kentucky the death of george floyd has reopened old wounds with protesters demanding justice for an africanamerican woman who was shot dead by police 2 months ago. It is this video of the last moment of George Floyds life a Police Officer kneeling on his neck that is driving the outrage 2 President Trump is weighed in calling the protesters thugs and suggesting National Guard troops shoot looters the republican president also to game against the citys democratic mayor mayor jacob fry fired back donald trump knows nothing about the strength of minneapolis we are strong as hell is this a difficult time period yes but you better be damn sure that were going to get through this as the protests and George Floyds name continue to grow the leaders of major cities across the u. S. Are hoping that promises of swift justice will be enough to calm tensions john hendren al jazeera chicago well many Police Across the u. S. Have condemned the actions of the 4 officers involved in the death of george floyd but its just the latest in the series of deaths of black men at the hands of Law Enforcement that i was on those reports starts with pictures of the incident in minneapolis. The scenes of george fully handcuffed being choked to death by a Police Officer has led to outrage within the insular tight ranks of the Law Enforcement community there was unusually quick condemnation on social media a new York Police Detective said the officer involved brought dishonor to the profession we take over to serve and protect and would like to see that that was the theme on both aspects other Police Officers had equally pointed words its time that we take these bad also as a speech out of gas and Start Holding them accountable and hold them to the same laws that we expect. And i hope justice prevails and i hope those people are found to be guilty of murder because thats what i was. Second i want to say. And we got to change this weve got to break these barriers in these walls and weve got to do what we can as Police Officers the Bigger Picture is how the killing of freud is going to complicate police work throughout america already many black communities are distrustful of Law Enforcement this is only going to make it worse when you see. What should be a routine apprehension become a de facto execution it is it is experience to watch. And former new York Police Detective keep taylor says there are systematic issues of race that need to be addressed makes it more difficult for officers interests simply trying to do their job every day. The fact that these. Negative incidents that occur do get publicized really brings to the forefront how important it is to address the inequities that occur in our criminal Justice System an incident that has left many Police Officers just as outraged as the people they are sworn to serve and protect many wanting answers and justice gabriels on doe aljazeera new york dave because a board member of the Communities United against Police Brutality hes joining us on skype from minneapolis thank you very much indeed for being with us let me ask you 1st of all about that response by Police Officer as to what has happened to george floyd how do you react to the way that social media has been filled with these comments. Nobody in the community is going to believe that those are what the Police Officers are thinking because we have a long history of Police Officers protecting their own the blue line of silence the blue wall of silence i dont think those statements are much more sincere than the statements were getting from the mayor or for the police chief at this time they want to come people down they want to say everythings going to change they arrest one officer weve been chanting at the demonstrations all 4 weve heard these promises before this is built up over years and its not going to go away with a couple of promises. And well come to the element of institutionalisation in a 2nd but we are talking about the Police Officers around the u. S. Who are going on social media showing their faces and making these statements in support of an investigation into the death of george floyd and asking for prosecutions to be brought against fellow officers. Yeah i wont say that all those officers are d insincere and there are officers who do really care but when it comes right down to it no officer will ever testify against another officer and so we see that not just the one officer who had his knee on his neck that is the grossest violation but that 3 other officers did nothing about it at the time when it was clear to everyone else on the scene that george floyd was being killed thats what really matters is the actions of the officers and in all the deaths weve seen in minneapolis no officer ever testifies against another so even if their words are sincere it doesnt show in the actions that weve seen here think given and given that let me ask you what your reaction has been to the fact that the officer has been charged with murder and manslaughter these a very serious charges and it has happened very very quickly which as you have pointed out is unusual in many cases when it comes to incidents like this. And yes this is very unusual and how quickly the officers are fired is very unusual i think part of that is due to this incident being so so horrifying to anybody who watches the video but remember before that video came out in public the Police Information officer was trying to claim that the officers noted that he was having a medical incident and they assisted him so it was only when the other video came out that they were forced to tell their real story they lied in their original statement because they thought they could get away with it the people who are saying these things are no more honest now than they were then they just got caught so yes after a particular group is incident like this theres got to want to be a lot of soothing words but we need to see well changes institutional changes changes that have been promised to us after the previous deaths and have never happened its good to get your thoughts on this day of breaking we appreciate it thank you very much indeed thank you. Well at a press conference earlier in the day president tom stepped up his rhetoric on china announcing a raft of measures targeting beijing the United States wants an open and constructive relationship with china but its even that relationship requires us to vigorously defend our National Interests the Chinese Government has continually violated its promises to us and so many other nations these plain facts cannot be overlooked or swept aside the world is now suffering as a result of the malfeasance of the Chinese Government. Trump announced the u. S. Would be cutting ties with the World Health Organization claiming it was being heavily influenced by china he warned of quote strong actions to take away Hong Kong Special status with the u. S. Saying new security laws that struck the territory of its autonomy from china he also announced plans to sanction top chinese officials responsible for eroding hong kongs tone i mean some voters a resident scholar at the American Enterprise institute hes joining us now from washington d. C. Stan thanks very much indeed for being with us so if i understand it correctly if he pulls the u. S. Away from the w. H. O. That gives china more of a chance to get greater influence with the w. H. O. If he revokes hong kongs special trading relationship actually that damages hong kong more than it damages china what do you think trump is actually trying to achieve with this. I dont think that there is a particularly Long Term Strategy here its the same government by its the 5th that weve seen throughout his presidency. As you say obviously by the by withdrawing from the w. H. O. You make china if anything more powerful there i think its reasonable to be concerned about chinas sway over the w h o weve seen w. H. O. Ringback officials engage in bizarre contortions to avoid discussing taiwan no the past few months but obviously this approach is not going to help there and the same applies to some extent for the u. S. Approach to hong kong what is particularly worrisome i think is that the u. S. Really seems to stand alone and it hasnt managed to draw in any of its allies in dealey either with the w
