And in sports a senior olympic official says the sport of coronavirus is a threat to this years tokyo james dick pound says a 3 month window to decide the fate of the july events. Hosni mubarak the egyptian president ousted during the arab spring uprisings has died aged 91 he passed away in a car a hospital where he had recently undergone surgery the current president of dull father r. C. C. Is among those offering tributes to mubarak or a better man they look back on the late egyptian role as life and legacy. Hosni mubarak maintained a firm grip on power in egypt for 3 decades until finally in 2011 the people had in their millions took to the streets hundreds were killed but after 18 days this. President Mohamed Hosni mubarak has decided to waive the office of the president of the republic. Now to reacted as they heard the news that brought the man with an iron fist down. The military council took the reins of power but it was from the bullet train the bark had originally risen to power. A former air force chief in 1973 he led an air campaign the regain the Sinai Peninsula from israel it has been a humiliating loss in the 967 war. President anwar sadat made him by surprise and. Mubarak was just meters away from sadat when he was shot dead in 1980. 8 days later. Became president almost immediately he implemented emergency laws giving the state sweeping powers of arrest and basic freedoms that would remain in place for his entire presidency there were a number of assassination attempts like this one during a visit to ethiopia. In the mid 990 s. Nearly 60 people were killed in luxor. Mubarak cracked down rounding up thousands of suspects from the inside many egyptians considered his rule oppressive although he won 4 elections there were allegations of fraud but he continued to impress mattie in the Global Political arena as he made International Diplomacy a cornerstone of his rule. To secure a steady flow of oil supplies into World Markets and broker deals between the palestinians and the israelis the americans enlisted support of 2 major allies saudi arabia and egypt the saudi kingdom use its financial power and egypt under mubarak use its political leverage to influence arab League Decisions the strategy paid off and he received crucial u. S. Military aid billions of dollars. But unflinching western support from the bark soon faded for the arab spring began mubarak was arrested and charged with corruption and abuse of power in 2012 he was sentenced to life in prison the failing to stop the killing of hundreds of protests was after a retrial mubarak was acquitted in 2017. But his legacy has in july with the current regime led by another military figure. Using similar hardline tactics to crackdown on dissent in order to stay in power. Several leaders have reacted to the death of egypts former ruler Hosni Mubarak the countrys current president of the father of sisi praised mubaraks role during the 973. 00 conflict with israel which he called a war that restore dignity and pride to the arab nation palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas praised mubarak support for the palestinian cause the Palestinian People in achieving their freedom and independence and israels Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu hailed mubarak as a great leader this. On behalf of the people of israel i wish to express deep sorrow over the death of president Hosni Mubarak he was a personal friend of mine a leader to lead his people to peace and security to peace with israel i met him many times and i was impressed with his commitment and we will continue to walk this joint i wish to send condolences to president out sisi the mubarak family and all the egyptian people. Mohamed el masri joins me now on since he is professor at the Doha Institute for graduate studies and specializes in egyptian politics thank you very much for coming to the studio we heard their world leader is praising mubarak but at the on the other hand we see people from within egypt calling him an autocratic who curbed even basic freedoms how do these 2 things work together. Well theres no question that he was an autocratic rule or theres no real debate in the you know Political Science literature he presided over egypt for 30 years he ran these sort of sham elections and referenda he eliminated pretty much all avenues for dissent he stifled media and obviously you know the Police Apparatus employed enhanced torture techniques there were many thousands of Political Prisoners so theres really no question that he was an autocratic ruler i think you know what youre seeing in egypt is this sort of mixed emotion because number one we have to be honest with ourselves there were still people in egypt who supported mubarak not everybody in egypt was on board with the 2011 uprising thats number one number 2 the current ruler of the fatah has sisi is actually even more authoritarian than mubarak ever was so you do have some egyptians who are sort of longing for the days of mubarak even though they werent fans of his how did hate maintain this International Legitimacy for as long as he did you know as we say many well ladies were impressed with him on the international stage. Well you know leaders in the United States and elsewhere in the western world are happy to do business with with dictators thats just the reality as long as theyre serving their interests in the region and leaders in the u. S. And elsewhere felt like mubarak could bring about the kind of stability in egypt and the region that they that they wanted for their own political agendas but even if you look today i mean sisi has a favorable relationship with with many western leaders so that isnt something that we should see as particularly surprising one thing that i will say about mubarak and he was an autocratic ruler but he was much more of. A diplomat and a statesman than say sisi is he was more polished in terms of just representing egypt abroad how did the fall of mubarak impact uprisings in the rest of the region at the time. Well theres no question that the uprising in tunisia and also the uprising in egypt those 2 revolutions serve as catalysts for protest movements elsewhere in the region in libya and syria yemen and elsewhere. Whats i think interesting and also tragic in many ways is that these revolutions then spurred these current and ongoing counter revolutions which have seen the power apparatus is take power back from the people in places like Egypt Amnesty International says that 840. 00 people were killed during the 18 days of protest that led to him standing down kemet of a now be justice for those people. Thats a really hard question to answer you know there were 840 People Killed the numbers are probably actually higher than that those are the only those of the confirmed cases there were also thousands of People Killed by all of the c. C. When he when he took over in 2013 in 2014 and we havent seen we havent seen just as mubarak went free sisi continues to preside over over egypt i just answered your question is that time will tell some people think that another uprising is a matter of when not if and if there is another uprising that we may see some semblance of justice but who knows when that might be well have to leave it there really good to have your analysis thank you for that thats Mohamed El Masry a professor at the institute for graduate studies specializing in egyptian politics. Or both Hosni Mubarak and his success of Mohamed Morsy were overthrown and each faced a series of challenges in court but the treatment they received during the Legal Process was very different 2012 mubarak was sentenced to life in prison on charges related to killing hundreds of protesters during the arab spring 2 years later his convictions were overturned morsi was egypts 1st democratically elected leader whose term ended after a military coup led by current president of the fatah sisi morsi was sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges similar to those mubarak faced will see collapsed in a courtroom and died in june last year there are reports that he was tortured in jail before his death and while the reaction to mubarak being cleared was launched he knew to raised a lot of suspicion especially among morsi supporters who have said that the charges against him were politically motivated. Well i think now tomorrow on bashara he is 0 senior political analyst and author of the book the invisible arab the promise and peril of the arab revolutions he joins us now live from paris marwan so we had mubarak then we had the democratically elected president morsy now sisi is egypt any better off. Well unfortunately not countries evolve but egypt has devolved and evolved so much so that we have moved from basically a mediocre autocrat into a horribly repressive dictator. Like like sisi it is really an unfortunate decade for egypt when in 1011. 00 there were the sparks the hopeful signs that egypt might be at last be able to get on the tracks towards democracy and prosperity social justice and so on so forth it ended up in quagmire somewhere between the military and. Parties and then of course a coup detat by general sisi leading us to probably one of the darkest moments in egyptian history where sisi is basically ruling the country. In the most repressive matts of manners so much so that now we have 70000. 00. Political prisoners in the country and most of the very relative small freedoms that where under Hosni Mubarak no longer are to be seen under this dictatorship how much of the turmoil that we have fame in egypt since mubarak is down to his time in power would you say. Well actually you know in comparison to other dictators say qaddafi or bashar and how to set aside his father mubarak was far more mild because egypt as a political system was an authoritative one that left much freedom in terms of social economic interaction for the society for the egyptians while in libya or syria or even iraq and other places. That the toilet 30 and regime was so severe that it lifted very little room in anything even intertainment culture and you cation and even within this very specific contrast mubarak was also different from say sadat or order ocean out of the not so subtle not the not so thought of themselves as historic leaders not only for egypt but also in the arab and the developing world they thought that they had Historic Missions mubarak on the other hand was very mediocre kind of leader while he ruled for 30 years with the help of the military but he had he lacked every possible ambition so much so that its known well known that when the Palestinian Leader would put any sort of conditions on the israelis or the americans in that Peace Process. Mubaraks cliche statement was always in response to arafats beggars cant be choosers he thought of himself and his regimes as beggars who got 2000000000. 00 a year from the United States and for that the services were run there egypt became a client government of the United States hoping to not see it in every possible out there so much so that by that by the time the egyptian but found the mubarak basically ended his political career egypt would be concerning it so if only with gaza with the tunnels the bridge between gaza and sinai Everything Else that egypt would concern itself with cooling the developing world africa the goal of the middle east issues of war and peace the whole Peace Process in germany would be constructed to simply egypt caring for israels security in gaza so much so that we see mubaraks ambitions being solo and his vision for the country being so mediocre so the small in fact thanks that that sound is their senior political analyst. Joins us now live from the tunisian capital tunis jamal you covered the protests in 2011 that brought about the end of mubaraks rule how do you think hell be remembered within egypt. As a man who we heard essentially ruled egypt with an iron grip for 3 decades under his rule corruption became widespread oppression became increased and the basic foundations of the Egyptian State deteriorated from because the position of egypt was as the leader of the middle east or the are becoming essentially a pawn in a wider. Conflict being controlled by much smaller and less our countries or at least thats what was a sentiment that was being expressed by those millions of people that took to the streets during the 18 days in 2011 its important to look at maybe in a country like egypt where there was only that brief window of Free Expression of 20112012 in terms of elections and so forth the only really true sporadic spontaneous and freedom and straight of peoples views was during the journey of 25th uprising and maybe that is the best way to assess what those people or at least a large section of Egyptian Society feel or felt about mubarak they would not have taken to the streets had there been a free way to change him or to call for reform they would not have taken to the streets if they didnt feel that they had no future they would not have risked the snipers of mubarak Security Services or being arrested if they felt that there was another way so whilst obviously over the next 24 hours there will be a lot of reporting on the state funeral and on his legacy in terms of a statesman and diplomats for many of the egyptians who lived through those 3 decades and the consequences which they see now under general abdul fatah they will be feeling maybe mixed emotions ones of maybe not being able to have seen justice served to a man that they. He was responsible for the deaths of so many and maybe some sort of relief that the feel maybe that it will be his past work as an example to others but there will definitely be strong feelings to say the least can you explain to our view is given the way that mubarak governed ruled the country. The way that he was an autocratic ruler why there are we seeing these messages of sympathy from the likes of the Palestinian LeaderMahmoud Abbas and israels Benjamin Netanyahu. Well you have to look at the our world in the context of whilst it is so divided it is actually united in many respects in the way that it is ruled it is ruled by a group in an autocratic rulers that ultimately have similar interests in maintaining the status quo and thats why for example there is that supports thats came for the coup in egypt from different regional countries who may not necessarily agree ideologically or politically with certain trends within the egyptian regime but know that they want to maintain it so you will get that supports of Benjamin Netanyahu obviously and the Israeli Government were extremely grateful and indebted true the policies of Hosni Mubarak not least in being able to establish that stranglehold over gaza and imposing the blockade which was essentially starving more than one and a half 1000000 palestinians there Mahmoud Abbas found legitimacy in the government of Hosni Mubarak in being able to meet a statesman thats a time where his party in occupied palestine had lost their legitimacy at least in elections back then some of the gulf war those in the United Arab Emirates and saudi arabia saw and Hosni Mubarak a man who was able to contain what they perceive as their existential threats which is political islam so there is a lot of different. Crosssection between these different regimes and rulers through will no doubt have some sort of debts or at least feel that they. Have lost interest in mubarak an ally as they are is it jim i shall their life rootedness thank you. Plenty more ahead on the news though including the u. S. President s visit to india coincides with the worst riots in the capital in decades well have the latest from delhi.
