Editor's note: This month, The Sun will be diving into some of Gainesville's underrepresented community leaders and their work. Rhonda Wilson and her Star Center Theater are the second in this series. Growing up with her grandparents in 1970s Miami, Rhonda Wilson loved acting. From soap operas to Broadway plays, watching people perform and trying her own talent was the young girl's favorite pastime. But nobody looked like her on TV or on stage. Wilson's friends thought her dreams of being a Black opera singer and actress were odd, and her grandparents told her to focus on grades, not theater.
