The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank kicked off its 30th annual Harvest For Hunger campaign virtually Tuesday, announcing new initiatives such as a food truck to help curb community hunger.
What normally would have been a morning filled with local celebrity guest shopping challenges and a pancake breakfast was limited to a virtual press conference due to COVID-19.
This year’s campaign goal is the equivalent of 5.6 million meals — $1.39 million and 100,000 pounds of food. The fundraising effort runs through June.
Online donations made through Friday will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $25,500 by other donors.
Akron-Canton Foodbank officials say that if the challenge is met, it will help provide an additional 204,000 meals for the local community. Those who wish to donate but aren’t comfortable heading out to a nearby store may donate online, by visiting the Foodbank website.
