January 17, 2021 THE damage caused by massive flooding brought about by heavy rains with strong winds to agro-fishery sector of Negros Occidental has increased to about P78 million. For the January 8 to 11 flash floods alone, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) had reported almost P52.8 million in losses. The figure covers P37.5 million worth of damage and production losses to the province's rice sector. Some 1,642 farmers with a combined areas of 1,574.49 hectares in 65 barangays of Sagay City, Cadiz City, Manapla, Talisay City, Silay City, Valladolid, Pontevedra and Bago City were affected. Incurring the second-highest amount of damage and production losses, at P8.17 million, is the high-value crops (HVC) sector.
