The Herald News NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks! (NBAM) will present "Uncommon Threads: The Works of Ruth E. Carter," a solo exhibition celebrating Massachusetts-born Ruth E. Carter’s 30-year career as an Academy Award-winning (Black Panther, 2018) costume designer. This exhibition is presented in collaboration with the New Bedford Historical Society, New Bedford Free Public Library, New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, and the College of Visual & Performing Arts at UMass Dartmouth (CVPA). The exhibition will feature costumes from "Dolemite Is My Name" (2019), "Roots" (2016), "Selma" (2014), "Do The Right Thing" (1989), and "Malcolm X" (1992), accompanied by sketches and mood boards from many of her other films, including "Black Panther" (2018) and ephemera from her Los Angeles studio. These costumes document Carter’s expertise as a visual storyteller who has mastered multiple genres and periods, making her one of the most sought-after costume designers in Hollywood.
