AJP leaders address the media in Guwahati GUWAHATI: Amid widening political rift between the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Raijor Dal (RD) after the two regional allies fielded candidates in same constituencies in some of the BJP strongholds in upper and northern Assam regions, the influential All Assam Minority Students’ Union (Aamsu) leader Azizur Rahman’s joining the Raijor Dal has given a major boost to the latter’s prospects in minority seats in lower Assam. Lower Assam is the saffron party’s weakest link, say party insiders. A ‘friendly contest’ between Congress and AIUDF in five lower Assam constituencies and the fear of losing grip over grassroots workers of the two grand alliance partners because of seat exchange may divide Muslim votes unexpectedly, benifitting peasant activist Akhil Gogoi’s RD.
