A developer's proposed Costco project is off the table

CRANSTON — A Massachusetts developer’s unpopular proposal for the construction of a Costco wholesale club as part of a redevelopment of Mulligan’s Island mini-golf is off the table.
The developer, Coastal Partners, of Beverly, withdrew the project’s application for a major zoning change on Tuesday, following extensive public hearings and in advance of potential City Council action on the project Thursday night.
The project, known as Cranston Crossings, faced stiff opposition from neighborhood groups and city officials as it made its way to the council’s full agenda.
As the political season heated up over the summer, mayoral candidates from both political parties expressed their strong opposition to the proposal. Some voiced their disapproval at a walk-through of the site that drew dozens of people in the middle of a pandemic.
