Saint Marys R.c. Church, Bolivar Ny

111 Wellsville St

Allegany,

New-york,United-states - 14715

Detailed description is St.
Mary's is a Roman Catholic Church Society within the Vicariate of Allegany County and is a registered Church within the Diocese of Buffalo St.
Mary's, Bolivar, N.Y.
celebrated it's 100th Anniversary in 1982.
Fr.
Raymond Uschold was the pastor at the time and with his encouragement, the parish joined together to produce, not just a directory of parish members , but also an historical collage of events leading to the next 100th Anniversary of St.Mary's - the building of our place of worship..
.
On July 17, 1904, the cornerstone of the present St.
Mary's church was laid.
The church was dedicated in 1905.
In 1918 the steeple was struck by lightening and was not replaced.
The loss of the steeple has been the only change to the exterior of the building but there have been several renovations to the interior of the church over the years.
During Fr.
Edward McCaffery's pastorate, there were many decorative changes made and a hand hammered metal tabernacle was installed.
.
Fr.
Harry Farrell was pastor from 1940 until 1961.
During that period several more changes took place.
A new electric organ and heating system were installed.
A marble altar and marble communion rails in front of the side-altars were donated by two parish families.
.
.
Fr.
Hennessy, pastor for almost 19 years at St.
Mary's, authorized the paneling of the interior walls of the church.
He was also credited with the building of a new parish hall, which has been used for many functions, such as religious education, meetings, celebrations, community affairs, and a community based Soup and smiles program to feed those that are not able to leave their homes or those simply in need of a good meal.
In recent years, the church itself has had wall repairs and changes to the sanctuary to accommodate the new liturgy.
These activities transpired during the term of Fr.
Richard Poblocki..
Communities were set up to review the options and to provide concrete ideas on which to act.
the walls were stripped, repaired and painted, new carpeting was laid, a new altar was put into place to allow the priest to face the people, new pews, center alter railings being removed and installed at the rear of the church, statues and the Stations of the cross were re-painted.
It was a massive and emotional undertaking.
.
.
The trama that presented itself in 2002 was the realization that our landmark rectory could not be salvaged or put to good use.Fr.
Robert Schober helped us through this difficult time.
In 1914 the building was moved from another property located on wellsville street to the spot on the corner of Cole street.
.
In 2002, Bishop Henry Mansell granted our request to be twinned with another parish in Allegany County.
We still would remain as a single stand alone Church site but we would share We our Pastors with Portville, in Catteraugus Co., for several years, Our pastor and our business office were housed in the rectory at Portville..
.
In September 2003 a new experiance evovled for St.
Mary's.
Fr.
Schober received a new assignment and we shared the services of Fr.
Jerome Disseck, pastor of Our Lady of the Angels in Cuba, NY and have again joined with other rural parishes in Allegany County.
In another new experience we received a Deacon Francis W.Pasquale Jr.
who assisted Fr.
Jerry and was given specific assignments within the Parish.
We were also once again given the oppportunity to monitor our own parish affairs.
A office was set up in our parish hall where Linda Gilliland accepted the position of business manager and Secretary of our church, St.
Mary's R.C.C.
Society of Bolivar, NY.
The Parish Ministries, working though and with our Parish Council, cooperated with Fr.
Jerry to both watch and to keep our parish alive and well..
.
In the year of 2007 as a result of the Diocesan re-structuring program, known as, "The Journey in Faith and Grace", We had a number of different changes take place.
We received a new Pastor / Priestly Moderator Monsignor Vincent J.
Becker who provided the Sacramental needs of our church.
Deacon Frank Pasquale Jr.
was assigned as our Pastoral Administrator who has over seen the Administrative / business affairs as well as assisting Msgr.
Vince with Pastoral responsibilities.
We have been blessed with assistance of our local Boy Scout Troop 746 in that through the Eagle Scouts program where as Mathew Morris for his project completed a Handicapped Accessible ramp leading to the Side entrance of our church.
Two years later his brother Rob Morris completed a new Cresche for our manger scene used during the Christmas seasons.
Now in 2012 Mathew Wandover is in the planning stages and will soon complete the painting of our ceiling frame within the Parish hall while installing new ceiling tiles with more insulation to be added which will help both reduce our cold weather heating bills and to keep the hall cooler in the summer.
We have also completed other major parish projects which included installing a new roof on our Bell tower, re-construction of our church chimney, acid cleaning along with re-pointing and mortaring of the entire church surface, and the re-painting of all wood work and window framing of the church and garage buildings.
We also installed a new Parking lot where the old rectory once stood, which provides handicapped accessible parking.
Our Lady's Altar and Rosary Society have also been very busy and through their annual Christmas Bazaar they along with donations received from the passing of our loved ones, have accomplished the purchase of all new fiber-glass tables and chairs for the parish hall, they had our cook stove and wooden butcher style block tables professionally restored.
Ms.
Deidre Ahl provided funds for the replacement and provision of a handycapped facilitated ladies restroom which also included replacement of the vanities, fixtures, and mirrors.
Diedre also provided funds to complete the same within our church restroom facility.
Mr.
Guy Gilliland now retired from his profession has been a great blessing in that he actually has completed the bathrooms as previously discussed and many other things as requested.
In 2011 Mrs.
Linda Gilliland retired from the business / secretarial end of our church to be able to devote more time to other projects in her busy life, but most of all simply to be able to enjoy her grand-children.
Linda now remains still very active within the church and has also been able to donate more time through our Lady's Altar and Rosary Society.
She has also been a mentor to our New Secretary Anna Crowe who came on board in 2011.
Both Anna and Deacon Frank truly realize now just how much Linda did in the Parish and thank her for continuing to role up her sleeves and pitch in when needed..
.
In June of 2011 Monsignor Vincent Becker retired to move back to his family farm residence where he was born.
Deacon Frank was re-assigned for another four years and we then where blessed in that we now received two Priest's to provide us with the Sacraments at St.
Mary's.
Fr.
Sean DiMaria was assigned as Priestly Moderator / Pastor and also was given an associate Fr.
Thomas Roman.
They have brought a new liturgical vitality of life to our church especially since the Advent season of 2011 when the new liturgical ordo of Roman Rite was introduced.
This is noted as the GIRM General Instruction of the Roman Missal.
Both word and song within the Roman Rite have changed and we all are on a new learning curve.
.
.
In this new re-structuring we are still clustered yet stand alone, with Immaculate Conception Church located in Wellsville, NY; Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Parish located in Belmont, NY; St.
Joseph's Oratory located in Scio, NY.
We now however, also share Fr.
Sean and Tom with St.
Jude's Chapel located on the Alfred State College Campus in Alfred, NY; St.
Brendan's Oratory located in Almond, NY; and Blessed Sacrament R.C.C located in Andover, NY..
.
From the laying of the cornerstone of our church in 1904, to the year of 2004 when, symbolically, new cornerstones continue to be placed.
even to this present day we remain with our doors open as a Roman Catholic worship site.we are proud to be parish and known as St.
Mary's R.C.C Society of Bolivar, New York.
God has never failed to guide and enrich us through the changes that have taken place in and to our church as well as to our community.
We are a strong faith community and will remain so regardless of the present culture and times.
Prayerfully, we will continue to be ONE IN CHRIST AND FULL OF HIS SPIRIT.
