While the majority of adults in Union County can understand pharmacy pamphlets, create a resume and compose email, nearly 15,000 adults cannot, according to the 2010 U.S.
Census.
Without the ability to speak, read, write and understand English at a functional level, these adults become stuck in low-wage jobs.
They struggle with inadequate or unaffordable housing and poor health.
We help our clients change these circumstances by becoming competent readers and writers.
Schools, libraries, churches, civic organizations and businesses offer space for one-on-one and small group instruction.
These partners help us reach more students and more volunteers by providing convenient locations..

In 1998 a coalition of teachers, humanitarians, business professionals and representatives from regional libraries and literacy organizations chartered Literacy Council of Union County.
Since June 2007, the Adult Literacy Center has been in historic downtown Monroe.

In 2015, we started a Motheread program in partnership with Alliance for Children, Smart Start and Union County Public Schools.
During the two 12-week sessions, our Motheread facilitator and volunteers teach moms how to develop good reading habits with their pre-school children.
