Founded in 2006 by Artistic Director Julianne Boyd and Tony-Award winning composer William Finn, the Musical Theatre Lab supports emerging writers, composers and lyricists and provides an encouraging, creative environment where new musicals are written, rewritten, workshopped and premiered.
Since its creation, seven world premieres and four workshops have been produced.
BSC's 2010 MTL season included a sold-out world premiere of “Pool Boy” by Nikos Tsakalakos and Janet Allard and the world premiere of “The Memory Show” by Sara Cooper and Zach Redler, which VARIETY hailed “a striking introduction of fresh musical talent.” Other MTL productions of note include “The Burnt Part Boys” by Mariana Elder, Chris Miller & Nathan Tysen (which later moved to Playwrights Horizons in New York City), “Calvin Berger” by 2010 Kleban Prize winner Barry Wyner (which played at George Street Playhouse spring 2010) and “See Rock City & Other Destinations” by Brad Alexander & Adam Mathias (which won the 2008 Richard Rodgers Award and the 2007 Jerry Bock Award, and played at the Transport Group in New York City in 2010).
