CURRENT STUDIES.

We are currently conducting two projects..
.
Vocational Skill Development in Adolescents and Young Adults with ASD.
.
The first is an evaluation of the efficacy of the Practical Assessment Exploration System (PAES; Swisher, Green, & Tollefson, 1999) with adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
PAES is a vocational skills training system designed to measure vocational potential as well as teach and enhance the vocational abilities of individuals with developmental disabilities.
Although PAES has received empirical support for use with a variety of populations, its use has yet to be validated for individuals with ASD.
To address this gap in the research literature, this project will utilize both quantitative and qualitative approaches to better understand vocational abilities as well as the relationship between these abilities and cognitive, adaptive, and social skills in adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder.
This research project is being conducted in partnership with Society for Treatment of Autism (STA) and Sinneave Family Foundation (SFF) who currently host the PAES system as part of the Pursuits program (a skills for life and vocational program for adolescents and adults with ASD)..

Resilience in children with HFASD.

The second is a project investigating resilience in children aged 8-12 that are typically developing (with no learning or developmental challenges) as well as children with Asperger's syndrome (AS), high-functioning autism (HFA), or Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specificed (PDD-NOS).
This project is aimed at discovering what important factors can be enhanced to promote resilienceand successful social-emotional development in these children.
Participants will be children between the ages of 8 and 12 years who either have no previous diagnosis or who have a previous diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), specifically AS, HFA, or PDD-NOS.
