.
.
In Metlakatla, our culture is our community’s strength.
Through coming together to put on potlatches in memory of our loved ones and in honor of those who are still with us, we learn to support one another through times of joy and sorrow.
Our traditions give us pride in both what we can accomplish when we work together as a community and our individual abilities.
The goal of the Healing Art Collection is to reflect this important aspect of our community’s wellbeing.
It highlights many of the traditional art forms practiced by local artists in Metlakatla today including woodcarving, basketry, textile weaving, beadwork, silver engraving, regalia and drum making as well as other artistic expression such as quilt making, glass etching, and photography..
.
The AISU’s Healing Art Collection feature two photograph exhibitions.
“Looking to Our Past to Inspire Our Future: A Photographic Exhibit of Metlakatla’s history” opened in 2007.
It features historic photographs selected from archives across the US that document the lifestyle, homes, and industries of the first generations of Metlakatlans from 1890s to the 1940s.
The exhibit also features of work of Tsimshian photographer B.A.
Haldane, who started a portrait studio in our community in 1899.
He is considered to be one of the first professional Native photographs in North America.
.
.
The second photographic exhibit opened in celebration of Metlakatla’s 125th Founders Day, AISU partnered with the Metlakatla Veteran's Association to present the second exhibit "Honoring our Heroes: Metlakatla's Salute to our Veterans, Servicemen, and Women" - a photograph exhibit dedicated to the generations of our community who have served our country.
Since the founding of Metlakatla in 1887, our people have served the United States government in all branches of the service - even before Alaska became a state.
Consisting of over 300 photographs submitted by friends and relatives of these honorable men and women, the images in Honoring Our Heroes range in date from 1910 through 2012..
.
AISU hopes that their Healing Art Exhibit is not only beneficial to the health and wellbeing of their community but that it also educates visitors to Metlakatla about its rich history and culture.
This facebook page is an important part of this initiative.
Open to the public Monday through Friday 8:30am-4:30pm.
AISU welcomes all visitors to Metlakatla to view its Healing Art Collection and experience the beauty and richness of our culture and history.
