About 1,000 demonstrators brought Brighton city centre traffic to a standstill yesterday afternoon. Protesters flew banners, blew whistles and shouted freedom at the public as they made their way through the streets. Video from the protest shows a 14C County Hospital and Brighton Station bus bought to a halt by the demonstrators in Queens Road. The driver beeps in support and shakes hands with scores of protesters as they pass by - breaking Covid safety rules.

Brighton and Hove Buses managing director Martin Harris said: “We apologise to the people of Brighton and Hove - and, in particular to our customers, that our driver has not stuck to the basic Covid safety rules of hands-face-space, which are also company policy.
Much loved driver Christopher Turnham died on Wednesday after falling ill with Covid-19. The 58-year-old was a popular figure who drove the 28 and 29 routes, working with the company for 17 years.
Brighton and Hove Buses’ managing director Martin Harris said Christopher was well-respected , who worked for the company for years of valued service . He said: So many people across the country have now been directly affected by Covid-19, including those in the bus industry who are doing the vital job of ensuring bus services can continue. “We were devastated to learn that one of our dedicated colleagues has passed away and our deepest sympathies are with his family who we are in touch with at this very difficult time.
