This live recording captures a Sarah Vaughan performance from the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, in 1985. In front of an audience of over 2,500 Vaughan delivers an evening of familiar jazz standards with subtle nuance, dark growls and shining clarity. The range of her voice, her vocal control and her communication of text make it a particularly compelling performance.
The talented trio featuring Frank Collett (piano), Bob Maize (bass) and Harold Jones (drums) provide tasteful and inspired backing to lovingly showcase Vaughan’s voice. The trio kicks off the evening with an 8-minute instrumental titled Hi-Fly, written by pianist Randy Weston. The song serves as an overture to set up the evening and showcase the talents of the trio.
