Letter: Climb for Hope thanks

You came, you climbed, and you helped us reach new heights. SpeakUp ReachOut is extremely grateful to the Eagle Climbing and Fitness Gym for hosting the second annual Climb For Hope event June 19. We raised over $8,000 for local suicide prevention programs and events for adults and youth. These funds will help us expand our impact as we work to prevent suicides in Eagle County through training, awareness and hope/ The organizing committee of Dave Dantas, Larry Moore, Pavan Krueger, Ashley Patriacca and Amber Mulson-Barrett of the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office dedicated themselves to making this family event a huge success. SpeakUp ReachOut can’t do the hard work of suicide prevention alone. For these big-hearted champions to join our cause, it means the world to us. New and expanded stores revitalize Breckenridge's Main Street Station

Existing businesses are moving into larger spaces, and new stores are moving in, said operating partner Jack Wolfe, who oversees leasing of the commercial area. “We really went after trying to strengthen the roster of businesses there and work with every one of them to try to get through the pandemic and get stronger,” Wolfe said. “We still have less than a 1% vacancy rate in Breckenridge, and I think we’re all surprised. The support of the town was key to keeping all those businesses in business, but we’ve been keeping busy down at Main Street Station.”

Haims: Consequences from a fall can be substantial

Fall risks can be attributed to many issues. Some of the most common causes of falls are vestibular issues, poor eyesight, weak muscles, and even medications. With a little education, you can substantially reduce your risk of a fall. As our country ages, the percentage of older people experiencing falls is increasing. Unfortunately, death rates from fall injuries have too substantially. From 2007 to 2016, the Centers for Disease Control provided data that indicated deaths from falls for adults over the age of 65 increased 30%. They estimate that by 2030, just nine years away, there may be seven fall-related deaths every hour. Throughout our lives, taking an accidental spill has and will continue to occur. When we were babies learning to walk, falls were routine. Often, a fall would rarely cause serious injury. Unfortunately, as we age a fall can have disastrous consequences. Sheika Gramshammer named 2021 Vail Valley Citizen of the Year

Special to the Daily Sheika Gramshammer and her husband, Pepi, shared the Vail Valley Citizen of the Year honor in 1989. Special to the Daily For her dynamic and selfless contributions to the community, Sheika Gramshammer has been named the 2021 Vail Valley Citizen of the Year. The honor has been handed out since 1981 to deserving citizens who have provided broad support, vision, and leadership to the betterment of the community and its many nonprofit organizations. Gramshammer was a co-recipient of the award with her husband Pepi in 1989, the year that she and her husband helped play an instrumental role in bringing the first of three Alpine World Ski Championships to Vail and Beaver Creek. In 1989, however, Sheika was just getting started. Since then she has provided philanthropic vision and community spirit enough for two lifetimes.

Richards is the author of the excellent, informative and colorful book Ski Pioneers: Ernie Blake, His Friends, and the Making of Taos Ski Valley, and has been a key member of Taos’ acclaimed ski school for 35 consecutive years, though he is taking off this winter due to COVID concerns.
