Mountainwatch | Drew Jolowizc It’s no secret Japan’s become an increasingly popular destination for those seeking deep powder snow and cultural immersion.  During the winter months both Honshu and Hokkaido are the recipients of large volumes of snow from the powder tap that is the Sea of Japan. Spread across Honshu there’s literally hundreds of resorts to choose from, which can be overwhelming when deciding upon where to spend your hard earned. For those who like to explore off the beaten track, the Akita prefecture in Northern Honshu is emerging as a destination for those who seek culture, deep powder with minimal competition for fresh tracks (i.e., none).

Staying home more than usual during a global health pandemic means the little family has been able to pay a lot of attention to becoming as self-sufficient as possible. RISING SUN - If you read about my antics giving a pig a shot or any number of my other columns you may have realized I’m attempting some kind of something in this little homesteader life.  It seems like there are many like me, young folks either escaping the wilds of the concrete jungle for the romance of the homestead in the Driftless, or perhaps following in the footsteps of what they’ve always known, but with a modern twist. Back to the land, farmers, movers and shakers-what better place to scratch out such a life than pocketed in these rolling hills?

A beautiful and frosty wonderland Rime Ice versus Hoar Frost Hillsides, power lines and even chicken coop doors all were covered by a spectacular Rime Frost recently. Many have mistaken this phenomenon for Hoar Frost however thanks to the heavy fog, the cause for the beauty is Rime Frost. MUSCODA - Over the course of the last few days the Driftless region has been treated to a real feast for the eyes. Delicate spikes have coated nearly everything insight. Coupled with heavy fog, many are left feeling as though they stepped into a wintery fairy tale.  Although initially many thought that the beauty was caused by Hoar Frost, but it seems as though it is in fact the lesser known Rime Ice.
