So much wood, so whittle time, say the Lake Country Woodcarvers, who gather weekly to share joy in their craft
Though they were shut down for months due to COVID-19 safety protocols, the Lake Country Woodcarvers are once again getting together every Tuesday afternoon in downtown Detroit Lakes. The group gathers informally to socialize, work on wood projects, brainstorm ideas for new projects and learn different carving techniques from each other. The gatherings are open to all who have an interest in woodcraft.

Library, museum and theater team up to host Community Conversations for Detroit Lakes
The Detroit Lakes Public Library, Becker County Museum and Historic Holmes Theatre are joining forces this month to host a series of online, virtual Community Conversations about current hot topics. The first, titled Education in a Pandemic, is set for this Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. Future conversations will take place on the fourth Thursday of each month, through April 22.

The global pandemic known as COVID-19 has had an inescapable impact on all levels of community living in Detroit Lakes over the past 11 months, and while its spread is currently on the wane, its effects are still being felt especially when it comes to educating our children.
Becker County Museum Executive Director Becky Mitchell says the time is now for museum supporters who have not yet made a donation toward its $6.4 million building project, as they still need to raise just under $500,000 before breaking ground on the new facility this spring.
Detroit Lakes Holmes Theatre wants to brighten up holiday season with virtual concert offerings
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit performing arts venues particularly hard this year; Holmes Theatre Executive Director Amy Stoller Stearns has teamed up with some of her colleagues around the region to offer a series of virtual holiday concerts through the end of December concerts that will serve to not only to provide some much-needed Christmas spirit for area residents, but also drum up support to help these venues keep their doors open.
