About halfway through last Fridayâs game against the Indians in Cleveland, I noted on Twitter that Reds pitcher Wade Miley has serious Tom Browning vibes. I wish I could say that I was making a prediction about how the evening would turn out, but I was actually commenting on the fact that Miley is a lefty who works really fast, just like Browning did during a career that landed him in the Reds Hall of Fame.
Â
As the game progressed toward its memorable finish, the parallels between Miley and Browningâs historic perfect game back became clearer, if you cared to look for them. Browningâs gem on September 16, 1988, was delayed by rain for two hours and 27 minutes. The Reds and Indians werenât quite delayed that long on Friday, but rain held up play in Cleveland for more than an hour and a half before the teams were allowed on the field.

Wade Miley has been named the National League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet.
Miley made history with the no-no in his last outing, allowing just two baserunners while striking out eight Indians hitters in the 3-0 Reds win in Cleveland. His effort marked the 17th no-hitter in Reds franchise history and the first since Homer Bailey’s against San Francisco in July 2013.
The veteran lefty becomes the first Reds pitcher to win the award since Johnny Cueto in August 2014. Outfielder Nick Castellanos was the Reds’ most recent winner in August 2020.

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Just three days after throwing the first no-hitter of his career, Wade Miley has been named the National League Player of the Week.
It’s the first player of the week award of his Major League career.
Miley, in his second season with the Reds, threw nine no-hit innings against Cleveland on Friday at Progressive Field. It was the Reds the first no-hitter since 2013 (Homer Bailey) and the first by a Reds left-hander since since 1988 (Tom Browning’s perfect game).

Though he’s made just 12 appearances for them, Wade Miley’s time with the Reds has already been a rollercoaster. Last season, the first of a two-year, $15-million contract, he hit the injured list three different times and pitched so poorly when he was active that he lost his rotation spot. He earned it back this year, largely thanks to injuries to Sonny Gray and Michael Lorenzen, then began the season with 11 shutout innings over two starts. Eight runs in 16 innings over his next three starts followed, as his ability to miss bats waned and bad pitches landed in outfield seats. All of this adds up to an average pitcher playing on an average team in a division that average teams could win. Then, all of a sudden, came the extraordinary.
