If you’re planning to balance a city break in Bangkok with some downtime in the fertile hinterlands north of town, Sala Bang Pa-in may be just the ticket. Perched at the tip of an island in the Chao Phraya River not far from Bang Pa-in Palace, a onetime summer retreat for the Thai royal family, the hotel is also an ideal base for exploring the UNESCO-listed ruins of Ayutthaya’s old city, just 20 kilometers upstream.

Fans of Marriott Internationalâs cheeky W Hotels planning a future trip to Japan now have even more reason to visit Osaka. Rising 27 stories above the gingko treeâlined Midosuji Boulevard, W Osaka opened its doors today as the luxury brandâs first-ever outpost in the country. The monolithic black facade by celebrated Osaka-born architect Tadao Ando presents a minimalist veneer that conceals flamboyant interiors by Amsterdam-based design studio Concrete, which was previously behind W London and W Verbier.
