Florence Gets His GOAT, Medina, and a Pipe Masters to Boot
This is gonna be a good (and highly sanitary) year of competitive surfing. news // Dec 21, 2020
What better way to start the day than Jack Robbo v. Kelly Slater at Pipe?
Jack, the young gun ready to mow down the Tour. Kelly, the Civil War-era musket that often misfires, but when focused properly, can still shoot with the best of ‘em.
Despite being one of surfing’s greatest-ever talents, Slater has rarely relied on raw ability to get himself through heats. If you think those 11 World Titles came from simply out-surfing his peers, you clearly don’t follow this sport. The best surfer of any given year loses the majority of events. It’s how and when they lose that matters.

Tyler Wright made history today as the first woman to win a Championship Tour event at Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu.
Wright defeated Carissa Moore in the finals of the Maui Pro presented by ROXY, which moved locations from Maui’s famed Honolua Bay after a surfer died after a shark attack during the contest window. Wright was understandably excited about the victory, her first of the 2020/2021 season, and its significance.
“I definitely don’t take this for granted, to have this opportunity today is truly special,” said Wright.

John John Florence has taken out the 2020 Billabong Pipe Masters at Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.
The local surfer defeated Gabriel Medina in a tight final held in below-average conditions. Florence secured his first Pipe Masters trophy.
The two-time world champions ended up separated by 0.67 points. It s great to win the first event of the season at my home break, especially after the injuries I ve gone through, expressed Florence.
John John had never won the Pipe Masters. In 2013 and 2017, the Hawaiian finished runner-up. It s the biggest event on the Championship Tour, and I ve grown up watching my heroes surf the Pipe Masters and win world titles here, so this is one of my important achievements, added Florence.
