Plan developed to prevent power lines from sparking wildfires

Credit Texas Wildfire Mitigation Project Undated - The Hiawatha National Forest and American Transmission Company have developed an operating plan to prevent power lines from sparking wildfires. The 30-year plan defines what construction, maintenance, and vegetation management activities ATC can perform… gives guidance for activities performed in sensitive areas… and establishes a new communication framework between ATC and Hiawatha. Under the plan ATC will clear transmission line rights of way to a width of 120-feet. Officials will use an aerial power saw suspended from a helicopter to side-trim vegetation in dense, rough terrain. Officials say the plan aims to protect public lands and improve the safety and reliability of the transmission system while also providing cost savings for the public, the company, and the agency.

The Seclusion of Rock River Falls in Alger County

The Seclusion of Rock River Falls in Alger County Here s a spot to include on your northern Michigan roadtrip: Rock River Falls. This ain t no “park the car and take a look” location...nope, it s a “park the car and walk over a mile” spot. This is pure wilderness. Sure, it welcomes visitors, but it doesn t cater to them with fancy paved trails and tourist accommodations. As you re on your way to the falls, driving through the Hiawatha National Forest, you have to drive down old unmarked logging trails. You ll eventually come to a small parking spot, get out of your vehicle, and walk your way to the falls down even smaller unmarked trails. The path to the falls looks like an old road. It seems to end near the bottom of a hill, but if you scour around, you ll see where another trail picks up.

Apr 19, 2021 HOUGHTON (AP) A Watersmeet High School student met with professors and college students at Michigan Technological University recently as part of an internship program aimed at promoting Native American interest in STEM fields. “My science teacher actually brought it up in class, and I figured, ‘Why not? ” said Watersmeet 11th-grader Assiniis Chosa. “I really do like life science, so it didn’t hurt to come try.” Because of the pandemic, Chosa had only gotten virtual presentations along with his classmates, according to The Daily Mining Gazette. Five presenters talked to them about careers in natural resources and engineering: Sarah Hoy, a research assistant professor at Tech’s College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science; Joan Chadde, director of the MTU Center for Science and Environmental Outreach; Rita Mills, tribal liaison for Hiawatha National Forest; and Watersmeet graduate and mechanical engineer Aurora White.
