COVID variant found in Marquette County: 2021 Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival postponed to 2022 | News, Sports, Jobs

(Journal file photo) MARQUETTE The Marquette County Health Department was notified on Tuesday that genetic testing confirmed that the B.1.1.7 variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 was detected in a positive case within Marquette County. Dr. Bob Lorinser, health department medical director, noted the case represented the first time the variant has been found in the Upper Peninsula. The variant is concerning because it is associated with increased transmissibility, the MCHD said. Compared with the standard SARS-CoV-2 virus, the B.1.1.7 variant is about 50% more transmissible, which leads to a faster spread of the virus and potentially increasing numbers of cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

NMU’s live COVID-19 reporting dashboard featured “many zeros” on Monday, said NMU Chief Marketing Officer Derek Hall. “Zero active cases in our population of 6,630,” Hall said in an email. “Zero residential hall students living in Spalding Hall, the campus quarantine site. Zero faculty and staff with a positive test result. Zero cases found in last week’s randomized surveillance testing.

It is free, but donations are appreciated. “Songs of Labor” is part of a series of events connected with the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center’s current exhibition on the labor history of the Upper Peninsula. The exhibition is not currently open to the general public due to COVID-19 restrictions.
