Speaking at the virtual conference Hydrogen Economy: New Delhi Dialogue - 2021, R. K. Malhotra said India has already been experimenting with blending hydrogen into CNG, but that the current cost of the blend was higher than the unblended CNG, because the cost to produce hydrogen is much higher than the cost of the natural gas.
He added that a limit of around 18% of hydrogen was blended in the CNG, leading to a drop in emissions.
Malhotra said that eventually, India would be use fuel cells as well as hydrogen in vehicles, but the blending into natural gas and CNG would be the initial stage for quite some time in India. This is important because India is expanding the gas grid all over various parts of the country.

India will spend $200 million over the next five to seven years to promote the use of hydrogen, Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi, the top bureaucrat at India s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, said at a virtual industry event on Thursday.
India has asked its state-run oil and gas companies to set up seven hydrogen pilot plants by the end of this financial year, India s oil secretary Tarun Kapoor also said at the Hydrogen Economy - New Delhi Dialogue event.

To produce hydrogen molecules, stored and trade as gas: Pradhan Public-sector oil marketing companies will scale up hydrogen production and the applications of hydrogen-enriched compressed natural gas, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan, said on Thursday.
“Presently, as in the case of other countries, our petroleum sector is the largest producer of hydrogen for various refinery process operations, Pradhan said at a virtual event titled Hydrogen Economy. “Hence, we realize the petroleum sector’s capability to produce hydrogen molecules, stored and traded as gas, making it a natural votary of this new energy form.”

New Delhi [India], 15 April (ANI): India and the United States will launch a Hydrogen Task Force under the Strategic Energy Partnership between the two countries soon, announced US Deputy Secretary of Energy, David M Turk.
He made the announcement at the inaugural edition of the Hydrogen Roundtable titled Hydrogen Economy: New Delhi Dialogue - 2021 . We are working together with partners in India to launch a US-IndiaHydrogen Task Force under the US-India Strategic Energy Partnership , said Turk. The United States is committed to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. We will focus on production, transportation, industrial use, and hydrogen as an energy storage medium, as well as the financial structures that will need to be present to ensure hydrogen s success, added Turk.
Singapore Leaders from nations pushing ahead with clean fuel initiatives said April 15 they would collaborate with India to meet its hydrogen aspirations as New Delhi aims to embrace the carbon-free fuel in a wide range of sectors in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint and cut dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Speaking at the ministerial session of the conference held virtually and titled Hydrogen Economy: New Delhi Dialogue - 2021 speakers from the US, the UAE, Australia and Denmark said they were working closely with the Indian government as well as private players in the country to expand opportunities for the carbon-free fuel.
