NBL star, shooter return for Meteors clash with Gold Coast

Former MVP returns to Mackay side after international stint

Premium Content Subscriber only Mackay basketball fans will get to watch a former fan-favourite take the court once more when the Meteors play Rockhampton on Friday. Meteors’ 2013 MVP and member of 2015 QBL championship team Matthew Adekponya will suit up as a short-term replacement player for his former side. The 30-year-old’s signing comes after Meteor forward Kye Medhurst suffered a foot injury during a pre-season match three weeks ago. Meteors coach Joel Khalu said he was ecstatic the 194cm forward was re-joining the club. “He knows most of the guys in the group really well and I’ve coached him for many years, so he understands our style of play and what we’re trying to accomplish at both ends of the floor,” he said.

Eyes on the prize : Meteors shoot for NBL1 title

Premium Content Subscriber only Mackay basketball will make its long-awaited foray into the NBL1 this weekend, with both the Meteors and Meteorettes opening their seasons. Both sides will feature in a double-header to begin the season, with games in Townsville and Cairns scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights. Meteors coach Joel Khalu said it was an exciting time to be a basketball fan in Mackay. “It’s been a long time coming, with last season being cancelled,” he said. “Everyone’s pretty pumped the season is back, and everyone’s excited to play.” Mackay entered the NBL1 North league in 2020, but never played a game as COVID-19 forced the season’s cancellation.
