Key changes set Mackay on path to break beef capital curse

Premium Content Subscriber only After securing a strong win against the Rockets, Mackay will have the opportunity to win back-to-back games against its rivals as the side make the trip to Rockhampton on Saturday. Despite winning in the beef capital once in his 10 seasons in the league, Meteors coach Joel Khalu said the team had reviewed the footage and was excited for the trip south. “The film session on Tuesday highlighted areas where we weren’t great, both defensively and with our offensive execution, so if we can make those adjustments then we’ll be a better side,” he said.

With the game played in front of a capacity home crowd, Rockhampton got within two points before the Meteors pulled away to win 95-81. Coach Joel Khalu said he was happy with how the team stayed composed in a tense final quarter. “Basketball is a game of runs, Rockhampton has guys who can shoot the ball so one thing with our group is that we know they’re never out of it,” he said. “Even when we’re up 10 or 15 they’re never out of it, but I had confidence in our group to get out of that situation, we just had to make some adjustments defensively.”

Former MVP returns to Mackay side after international stint

Premium Content Subscriber only Mackay basketball fans will get to watch a former fan-favourite take the court once more when the Meteors play Rockhampton on Friday. Meteors’ 2013 MVP and member of 2015 QBL championship team Matthew Adekponya will suit up as a short-term replacement player for his former side. The 30-year-old’s signing comes after Meteor forward Kye Medhurst suffered a foot injury during a pre-season match three weeks ago. Meteors coach Joel Khalu said he was ecstatic the 194cm forward was re-joining the club. “He knows most of the guys in the group really well and I’ve coached him for many years, so he understands our style of play and what we’re trying to accomplish at both ends of the floor,” he said.
