We asked Birmingham-area residents, What did you learn about yourself during the pandemic? CATHERINE SURRETT: “How change really affects me, it was so hard to get used to all the different things . . . Everything was shut down and I couldn’t get used to that. You couldn’t just go in places anymore, I had to change my job and that affected me. I’m just really used to my normal stuff so [that change] was definitely a challenge.” GRANGER SURRETT: “I learned to be a lot more content because I know a lot of people had a bunch of days where we’re just sitting there with nothing to do . . . and being really kind of appreciative of that time and content with that time . . . just kind of being happy with the moment you’re in, even with things changing so quickly.

On July 4, Vulcan s Thunder on the Mountain To Celebrate Birmingham s 150th

The Birmingham Times The city of Birmingham is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2021, and it’s not a surprise that Vulcan will be on top of it all. Vulcan, a landmark that symbolizes Birmingham’s roots in the iron and steel industry, stands tall atop Red Mountain and will oversee Alabama’s largest Fourth of July celebration, an event that will feature an array of fireworks honoring both the city’s sesquicentennial and the nation’s birthday. The Medical Properties Trust Thunder on the Mountain which begins at 9 p.m., on July 4 is presented by retailers Hibbett Sports and City Gear and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Callahan Eye Hospital.
