Police arrived in Helston town centre this lunchtime to keep an eye on the unofficial Flora Day celebrations taking place. Despite the event being cancelled, many people have been left wanting to celebrate the day still and have organised their own activities. Although not nearly the same numbers as a normal Flora Day would expect to see, a small crowd began to build outside the Guildhall ahead of midday, when the Ancient Furry Dance would normally be beginning. As a result, police arrived to oversee what was happening and ensure no rules were being broken. People stood outside the Guildhall at midday. Picture: Kathy White
Flora Day may have been cancelled but that hasn t stopped Helstonians celebrating the day in whatever way they can. Whilst making sure to still following all the government rules of social distancing, small groups of spaced out families stood on the pavement outside the Guildhall at 7am to watch the clock strike the hour and what would normally herald the start of the dancing. For as Helston Flora Day Association said: It would not be May in Helston without flags. Association stewards and volunteers were busy over the weekend putting up the coloured bunting that usually adorns the town centre streets each Flora Day. This year s celebration was due to have taken place this Saturday, May 8, but for the second year running there will be no dancing and no crowds due to the ongoing coronavirus restrictions. In a bid to still give the town something of that celebratory feel, to mark the arrival of spring and the coming summer months, the flags have been put up as usual however and some residents are still likely to decorate the outside of their houses as they would normally for the day s festivities.
