Helene Fouquet and Ryan Gallagher (Bloomberg) The French cybersecurity agency warned that an attack similar to one used by Russian military hackers has been penetrating companies that use Centreon software for three years.
The attack started in late 2017 and continued into 2020, watchdog ANSSI said in a report. A representative for ANSSI declined to identify groups that may have been exposed in the hack, but said that the attack was now over.
“This campaign bears several similarities with previous campaigns attributed to the intrusion set named Sandworm,” ANSSI said, referring to the Russian cyber-espionage group. It discovered the presence of a “backdoor” vulnerability on several Centreon servers.
Funding for African start-ups slowed for the first time after nearly 10 years of growth as investors in the fledgling tech scene were put off by the Covid-19 pandemic, according to venture capital firm Partech Partners.
Companies on the continent raised US$1.43-billion (R21-billion) in 2020, down 29% from a year ago, Partech Partners said in a report. Just two deals above $50-million closed last year compared to 10 in 2019.
“There were hardly any mega-rounds in the African tech ecosystem,” the Paris-based firm wrote in its annual survey of start-ups that have most of their operations in, or get the bulk of their revenue from Africa. “This sharp drop clearly marks the impact of the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.”

European Union officials signed off on a study for a low-earth orbit constellation similar to Starlink that would offer secure government communications and bring internet service to isolated communities, French newspaper Les Echos reported, citing unnamed people in the bloc’s Commission.
The EU could make an announcement about a satellite constellation on Thursday, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg, without giving further details.
Developing one would make Europe less dependent on Chinese and U.S. technology in what’s turning into a new space race in low-earth orbit. U.K.-based OneWeb is the nearest rival to Musk’s Starlink but that’s now drifting beyond the EU’s reach following Brexit.
