The issue seemed to come out of nowhere. Umatilla school board members last month started by discussing how to resurface the floor of the high school gymnasium.
Soon, they found themselves talking about mandatory gym shoes. Students should have to wear shoes, they said, which are floor surface-friendly.
Then the discussion shifted to physical education clothes. Could the school strike a deal with a discount store to provide inexpensive shoes and clothes?
And then, in the middle of a confusing conversation between board members, school staff, parents and boosters, someone uttered the word âuniform.â
That was benign enough. Until a board member stopped the discussion to ask, âAre we talking about P.E. uniforms or school uniforms?â Blank stares followed. Then the gears began working again.
Liliana Gomez
Liliana âLiliâ Gomez, running for Position No. 3, is a Hermiston native and a records specialist for the Hermiston Police Department. She said she has always had an interest in education, including serving as a tutor during her teenage years and teaching English overseas. She is on the Hermiston School District budget committee.
Now that students have returned to school full time, Gomez said she believes it is important for the district to focus on studentsâ mental health and be proactive about having resources available for students as they return.
âWe all know that this took a toll on every single person, adults included, and no doubt this took a toll on students,â she said.
Hermiston School District has announced it will opt out of state testing for the current school year.
School districts usually have students participate in state assessments in reading, math and science each spring. But Superintendent Tricia Mooney said this year the district will forgo those assessments in order to maximize the in-person instructional time students have left instead.
âThis is really about supporting our kids and supporting our teachers,â she said.
Usually, state testing takes between one to two weeks for students to complete. Even with much shorter tests this year, it would still mean time not in front of a teacher for students who just returned to in-person classes. Mooney said testing often creates anxiety for students, as well, and the district doesnât want to add to what has already been an anxious time.
