Hermiston School District announced that all classes will be canceled for Tuesday, Feb. 16, due to snow.
The school district was planning to bring kindergarten and first grade students back to the classroom for their first day of hybrid learning on Tuesday. That milestone will be postponed by at least a day.
All other students classes are also canceled, even if they are virtual.
Other cancelations announced so far:
⢠Umatilla School District has canceled limited in-person instruction for Feb. 16 but will continue online classes.
⢠All in-person classes are canceled for Stanfield School District for Tuesday, Feb. 16, and parents are asked to refer to the district s inclement weather schedule on its website. Meal delivery is also suspended.
HERMISTON — As school districts across Eastern Oregon began announcing school closures, the snow day for Hermiston meant a delay to the long-anticipated start of hybrid learning.
After Hermiston s Funland Playground burned to the ground two years ago in May, the NEW playground is set to have a Summer grand opening.
This new Funland is every kid s dream playground! I recently checked out the City of Hermiston s Parks and Recreation Department Facebook page and discovered the site will have a Pirate Ship! Check it out!
The new playground is bigger and better. It s stronger and constructed of metal, plastic, and rubber. The old model was mostly wood. The new structure will also feature surveillance cameras.
A lot of planning has gone into the building of one of the largest, most lucrative playgrounds in the Northwest. There will be three zones, including Wild West, Adventure, and Farmland. That s not all. There s a wagon train, locomotive, stagecoach, barn, and silo with slides. And what playground can go without gigantic fruit and vegetables? This one spotlights a six-foot slice of watermelon.
Hermiston High Schoolâs parking lot has been mostly empty for the past year, but on Friday, Jan. 29, a long line of vehicles snaked through it, ending at a set of white tents.
Inside the tents, drivers rolled up their sleeves and nurses reached through car windows to deliver doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Bri Silva, operations manager for Little Tots Daycare & Preschool in Hermiston, was taking selfies while she waited in line, barely able to contain her excitement.
âIâm so stoked,â she said.
After previously limiting vaccinations to categories such as health care workers and nursing home residents, Oregon opened COVID-19 vaccinations to people working in education and child care on Jan. 25. Umatilla County officials estimated they had enough doses to vaccinate about 25% of the countyâs educators during the Hermiston clinic and one held the day before in Pendleton.
