Child poverty In Welwyn Hatfield has been one of the lowest risers in the East of England over the past five years, according to the latest figures released by the House of Commons Library.
Welwyn Hatfield saw a 12 per cent rise in relative child poverty (before housing costs) since 2014/15, the lowest rise in Hertfordshire over that period of time.
Relative child poverty is defined as when a child is living in a household with an income below 60 per cent of the median in that year - which for 2020 would be any figure lower than £18,480.

Free school meals in Hertfordshire were provided in the form of a voucher to more than 20,000 children over the Christmas break.

Following a government U-turn and national debate, more than 20,000 children in Hertfordshire were given free school meals over the Christmas break.
Herts County Council delivered meals to those entitled to them over Christmas via supermarket vouchers.
The scheme, which is funded by the government’s COVID-19 Winter Grant Scheme, provided eligible families with a £30 digital supermarket voucher, per eligible child, to cover the two week Christmas holiday period.
Terry Douris, executive member for education, said: “We’re delighted that so many families engaged with the scheme and made use of the supermarket vouchers over the festive season, we hope it took some pressure off parents and carers at this difficult time.

The hot meals are being delivered by Communities 1st volunteers to the homes of nearly 140 pupils signed up to Hertsmere Borough Council s free meals scheme during the festive school break.
