Mourners raised $25,000 in just a few hours for the family of Roop Gupta, a 68-year-old convenience store owner shot to death while he worked Tuesday night.
âItâs really all we can do right now, so thatâs what we do,â said Heidi Welti, who created the GoFundMe campaign for Guptaâs family. âWe support each other.â
Gupta had been attacked inside Madeira Beverage once before in 2012, when an armed robber shot him multiple times in the stomach and fled the scene. Welti remembers holding fundraisers to cover his hospital expenses, then, too. He recovered; the attacker was identified, arrested and convicted.
