(Dave Copeland/Patch) DANVERS, MA Essex Tech intends to bring back 75 percent of its students full-time on March 17 while developing a plan to return the remaining students to in-classroom learning soon thereafter. Superintendent Heidi Riccio said the plan which the school committee approved on Wednesday will return the Career Technical Education full-time, while academic classes remain in a hybrid- or remote-learning model until a final plan for all students to return is developed and approved.

Essex Tech students continue salt marsh study in Gloucester

Wicked Local DANVERS For the last 20 years, students at Essex Tech have passed the torch onward for a research project studying the salt marsh on Eastern Point in Gloucester. The project is part of an ongoing, collaborative study with Mass Audubon. Through the study, a generation of Essex Tech students over the past two decades have collected data monitoring the composition of the salt marsh vegetation as well as the fish and crustacean population there. Students additionally continue to study the ground water salinity at the marsh. While the study initially set out to analyze the impact of the invasive Phragmites australis (the common reed) and the restoration of the marsh, data being collected today also provides insight into climate change and sea level rise.

Essex Tech receives state grant for workforce training

Community Content Superintendent Heidi Riccio announced that the Baker-Polito Administration awarded Essex Tech a $240,000 grant to train people ready to enter the workforce or advance in their careers. The school will use the Career Technical Institute grant to train those who are unemployed or underemployed. Twelve students will be trained in each of four disciplines including automotive services technician, HVAC technician, plumbing and construction labor. Successful participants will earn industry certifications/credentials and career placement assistance. “At Essex Tech, our primary mission is to train our future workforce,” Superintendent Riccio said. “We carry out this mission through excellent technical programs during the day but also in our evening programs. We intend to do that. When a recession hits, some occupations may need to adjust and the output is new opportunities. North Shore school officials call for educators to receive COVID-19 vaccine in Phase I

Wicked Local Many North Shore School officials are requesting that educators be reclassified in the state’s vaccination plan, granting them access to COVID-19 vaccinations now, during Phase I. Phase I includes COVID-19 facing health care providers, first responders, staff and residents at congregate care settings, among others at high-risk for contracting the vi. As it stands now, educators are not eligible to receive vaccinations until Phase II of the plan, which begins in February. The North Shore Superintendents’ Round Table, which represents 29 districts, made their request known in a letter to Gov. Charlie Baker. “We cite the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in urging you to prioritize the health and well being of our educators so that Massachusetts school districts can operate at the fullest possible strength as our nation begins to emerge from this global pandemic,” the letter states.
