The attack against a 61-year-old Asian man on East 125th Street and 3rd Avenue on Friday night is being investigated by the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force. On Sunday, Governor Andrew Cuomo directed New York State’s Hate Crimes Task Force to offer assistance in the investigation into the East Harlem attack.
The victim, seen below, is now fighting for his life. His niece told Eyewitness News’ CeFaan Kim that he immigrated to New York two years ago and moved to Harlem after his Chinatown apartment burned down and he lost his job due to the pandemic. To support his family, he was collecting cans.
