STAFF at a Workington school have put their best foot forward to honour the memory of a beloved teacher. Teachers and staff at St Joseph’s Catholic High School have raised money for the Henderson Suite at the West Cumberland Hospital by conquering all of the Western and North Western Wainwright fells. The challenge, which has seen them surpass their £1,000 fundraising target, was in memory of much loved and respected teacher Julie Holgate. She was treated at The Henderson Suite during her 10 year battle with cancer before she sadly passed away in November 2020. Mrs Holgate worked as a PE and Art teacher across the region throughout her 18+ year teaching career. Having worked at St Joseph’s for 12 years she inspired countless students to remain active, healthy and pursue their sporting abilities, staff said.
Chemotherapy services at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven were given a boost recently when an incredible donation of £40,000 was received. The money was donated by Martin Mahone, from Cleator Moor, as a thank you for the care given to his wife Joanne. Joanne Mahone sadly passed away aged 46 in 2019, after having a rare form of cancer. Martin explained that he wanted to raise money in Joanne’s memory that could help others in the local area. He said: “20 months ago I lost my beloved wife Joanne to a very rare sarcoma cancer after she was diagnosed two years ago. “Family, friends and our incredible community committed to raising funds in the hope that we could find treatment to save her.
