Hexham to launch animation festival with £80k arts and culture grant

HEXHAM’S High Streets Action Zone (HSHAZ) has been given a boost with the announcement of a further £80,000 grant from Historic England. Hexham HSHAZ is one of over 60 English high streets to receive a share of £6 million for its cultural programme, through grants to local arts organisations for cultural activities. Led by the Queen’s Hall, HSHAZ will run a pilot project in September called Animation Hexham, using the town’s high street and buildings to inspire conversations about Hexham’s past, present and future. Katy Taylor, who put together the successful bid, said: “We’re working together with 6 professional artists and community animators to create work that will be projected in the high street in September. The idea with the pilot project is that it creates animation that initiates conversations on what the high street means to residents and what it could be. Party lines drawn as Hexham seats are hotly contested

POLITICAL battle lines have been drawn for the county council seats throughout Hexham. The Conservatives currently hold Hexham Central with Acomb and Hexham East with Coun. Trevor Cessford and Coun. Cath Homer currently incumbent. They will both re-stand for election in May’s election, and Hexham Town Council member Liam Panesh hopes to usurp current councillor for Hexham West, Independent Derek Kennedy, to make it a clean sweep for the Tories in the town. But Labour are looking to muscle in on the town too, and Penny Grennan, the party’s parliamentary candidate in the 2019 General Election, is looking to take the Hexham Central seat.

Northumberland Councillor urges local shopping

A Northumberland councillor has offered her support for local businesses ahead of non-essential shops opening on Monday. Cath Homer, Northumberland County Councillor for Hexham East, reminded the public that while they have had little choice but to change their shopping habits during the pandemic, local businesses will need their support when they open again on Monday. Cath said: “Many businesses have gone to quite unbelievable lengths to keep us supplied with essential goods and food over the last twelve months. It’s time to support them now and put them back – use them or lose them. We have some fabulous businesses. I’d encourage everyone to shop locally as much as they can.”

Local councillors pay tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh

Buckingham Palace announced at lunchtime that Prince Philip had died at the age of 99.  Coun. Gordon Stewart, who represents Prudhoe South on Northumberland County Council, said: I know that residents of Prudhoe will be Saddened to hear about the death of Prince Philip. A man that has played a big part in keeping the spirits high through some very challenging times. God Save the Queen. Hexham town councillor Cath Homer, who also represents Hexham East on Northumberland County Council, said: Terribly sad news from Buckingham Palace announcing the death of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Forthright and steadfast, he has been an ever present support to our Queen and our country, and leaves a strong legacy for young people alongside his involvement with many charities across the country. Rest in peace, sir.
